@@joshuatrevino4508seriously if 8 year old me could figure this game out it can’t be that hard. Tired of reviewers calling games bad bc they suck at games
@@avej99 Well it's different for a kid with too much time on their hands and a reviewer who has a few hours or days to put out a review. If they game won't teach you how to play and thing you just have to know obvously someone won't figure it out. If I gave it to my sister I doubt she's figure out stuff like having to press jump twice to grind or how flight controls work, or the direction of the stick influences the type of jump besides just trial and error or me telling her which shouldn't be the case. She'd just have to fumble around for hours being helpless. And a video tutorial shoved off to a side menu isn't good a teaching players mechanics either.
This is a childhood game for me that I got for my fourth birthday. Somehow, I remember getting it too. There is so much i could say about this game and how good it is, but I'll restrain myself. I kind of wisb you talked about the art style, though, because the art style in this game is so damn good. The solid color shadows with the lines and the overall chalk aesthetic looks so good and matches the tone of the game so well.
I played this game so much as a kid and it's such an underrated racing game. I'm always slightly baffled when I look at the reviews because most of them were very mixed, not because the game was bad, but because it's so unconventional and has a steep learning curve which is such a dumb reason to lower a game's score because yes, it is NOT beginner friendly, but once you get a handle of the controls and mechanics, it is one of the most fun racing games that makes you fight for first place and when you get it, you've earned it. I love MK8, I've played that game so much, but I quickly reached a point where I could win almost any race without trying all that hard, but I don't think I could ever get to that point with Sonic Riders and I love it for that. This is absolutely one of my favorite racing games ever.
There is something you shouldve also mentioned: To take the high routes is dependent on the angle of the ramp. If its more facing forward push UP on the control stick, but if its more upwards push BACK on the control stick
“You can’t just push the stick in one direction and just wait” I wish somebody working on zero gravity would’ve known that. It would’ve made zero gravity a little less boring imo This game series could’ve been the Mario kart competitor & I still think there’s a chance for it
I've only recently tried out Sonic Riders on the Dolphin emulator and wow the game is amazing. And I still appreciate that Cream is still as good as she is in every single sonic game she has been available to play it lol
Riders had the coolest character designs in the series in my opinion. I wish they appeared in more games, even just as a bonus costume or something. Anyway, this and F-Zero GX on GameCube were where I think super intense racing games peaked, they had so much style and the level of control and challenge was on point. No other games manage to match their speed either, off the top of my head Need For Speed: Most Wanted is the closest it got and that series generally aimed to be a bit more realistic (by comparison to the two previously mentioned).
Long text ahead: I love Sonic Riders gameplay, it feels so satisfying and it is so good to play, while I do love the other Sonic racing series such as the "All-Stars" trillogy (All-Stars Racing, Transformed and TSR), the Riders series still is my favorite probably (but both are on the same level of quality, both coexisting is really nice and gives variety, especially since both are equally good) Sadly, as much as you said the game is not overcomplicated, it gives you the right amount of control and mechanics, for most people, especially in 2006, that was not the case, while I do still love Zero Gravity as much as I love Sonic Riders, I gotta agree with everyone on the internet, the controls really got a lot simpler While the rail problem you mentioned was fixed by making you only having to jump on the rail and not press the jump button twice, other things were also simplified along with that, the trick system was totally destroyed, both parts are not totally gone, for the jumping part, instead of having to hold for the amount of time, you just need to press the button at the tip of the ramp, the jump has no charge, while the ranks are determined by where you jumped out of the ramp The drift was also completly removed and to take turns into the track you just need to use the Gravity Control, which is sad, since the drift from Riders is so good, while I love the Gravity Control, especially for things that aren't taking turns on the track, such as running on walls, breaking walls to get new paths, and reaching higher paths, I hate it replacing the drift One thing I like about ZG over the original game is the Upgrade System and how it makes choosing your Extreme Gear so much more fun, in OG Riders it doesn't feel like you have much reason to choose a different Extreme Gear, just using the one from your character is good enough, unless you want a Gear to look cool, in ZG there is a whole strategy to choosing your gear, you can choose a gear to alternate beetween all the 3 types by spending some rings, some gears that doesn't give you any type ability but has a special upgrade to it, etc. It is genuinely really fun, while it is kinda confusing the types not being from the characters and them not even starting with their type abilities until they upgrade, I think that makes not only choosing your gear more fun but the races too, like, in the first lap, everyone is probably equal, because they all don't have their types to get their exclusive shortcuts, while in the last lap the game is already a lot more developed, that creates such a fun evolution to your races with an clearly "early game" and "late game" And another thing I love about ZG is, as I said, the Gravity Control, while I do not like it replacing the drift, I would love having both in the moveset, I love the fact that this ability gives you new routes, along with the type exclusive routes that you have on the first game, that makes the track really complex like the first game that also has multiple paths, and it is so fun to go into new paths by breaking a fan, sticking into a wall, jumping off a ramp and then using Gravity Control in mid air to go higher into a new path, there are so many cool new paths to go, that the Gravity Control allows like the 1st game couldn't, and I think it is a cool ability for a sequel to expand on the level design, the Gravity Dive also is super interesting, it drains your gravity meter really fast but it may be worth using to get some amazing extra speed, especially in the intended sections where there are objects on the air to give you a boost, it is risky, may make you not be able to use Gravity Control to take shortcuts, and can even make you have to run on-foot for a while, but it can be very rewarding I'm indifferent about the on-foot shortcuts, idk if I like them better than having to run and refuel your gear in a pitstop or not, but I think they're cool One thing that I would recommend, after playing ZG, play Sonic Riders Regravitified sometimes, it is really fun and makes Zero Gravity a lot more fun than it already is by fixing the gameplay simplification, adding the charge to jump of a rank (sadly there is no trick system, it must be complicated to do) and it adds a drift, which is not as smooth as 1st Riders but it works well and makes the Gravity Control really fun to use only to take shortcuts not to make turns The "bad" part about it for me is that it adds the character specific types back (which some people might prefer actually), which for me takes away that fun part that I said about choosing your gear and the upgrades you'll need, which I think it is a worth trade for what it gives to you, and it's fair, it's still really fun to play with the type specific characters just like it was on the first game, but I think the upgrade system is so fun that for me I get a bit sad that this comes along with the other features (still a great mod though) Thanks for reading!
I'm personally not a fan of Regravitified since I don't like how drifting is faster but also doesn't take away any energy from the meter (also they removed the hidden trick system in ZG for the sake of the charge jump, which btw was there,) but it's still an interesting modding effort nonetheless. (Also the Gear Change system doesn't restrict you from shortcuts if you get the type upgrade first lol)
This game is awesome! This was some of the peak of Sonic racing and racing in general, as it's just so unique! It's really fun to learn and master all the tricks and techniques, and it just has the style! This is all coming from someone who grew up with Mario Kart and not this, though I did grow up with Zero Gravity. Even the story is quite good, though i do think it fell off a bit at the boss reveal, but it is genuinely good for a racing game especially. Much more suiting for Sonic than those kart racers, and it even has other Sega franchises themed stuff. I just wish it had more tracks and created a greater legacy, like a spiritual successor or something similar, as a racing game of this style would do great in this day and age on modern consoles, and would be a great competitor to Mario Kart for how fresh it is and its untouched potential. I don't think this game aged the best, especially with the graphics, animations, and some of the story themes, but it really set the standard well with its distinctive tone and ideas. But by far its biggest flaw is that it doesn't have any tutorial to explain any of its mechanics, which was a big detriment to its reception, so if they ever make a new one, they should make it much more accessible by adding a tutorial mode and simplifying the mechanics a bit. I just want more of it. At least Speed Simulator has Extreme Gear now.
oh my gosh, you said 'arcade' racer, not 'kart' racer, thank you, just thank you, it is an arcade racer, not a kart racer, everyone keeps saying that tho, so thank you for being correct and actually knowing that instead of just going 'oh yeah its totally just a Mario Kart knock off so it must be a kart racer', thank you. --happy viewer noises--

I love the speed and boost and quick turns and tricks in the air and just everything in this game! 😁 Great video and can't wait for the next one! 😁
GDubA, your newer videos are having me rolling and shaking on the floor from stimulation... Thank you for being such a great TH-camr. The thing is I've never played this game, but you don't it confusing at all. Very entertaining and great video!
As a child I loved Sonic Riders. I would like them to remake the first one. As for learning the mechanics of the game, all I did was jump in and learned as I go.
One thing i like about this game is that you dont need to hold some button to accelerate. The gear moves on its own. So you're saving some unnecessary action for better control. And also makes the game feel faster.
The placement of the boxes are also neat, it encourages further exploration. One of my favorites being: falling multiple times while trying to get that 100 ring box in the factory track. It's stupidly fun. It's easier if I use a power character for there, yet attempting to get it with sonic will never not be funny to me.
@@Sonic-oh2lyI think the issue might be that people didn’t get everything to work on their first few tries so they gave up on many of the games mechanics. Mario Kart is so simple that anyone could do a decent job on their first few attempts. People probably thought this game was just going to be like that and didn’t think it had a skill floor higher than a basement.
Another thing you failed to mention are some of the various boards you can get. One of my favorites is the Opa opa which I use on knuckles a lot. What this board does is it makes you ALWAYS have a level 3 attack which is akin to that of amy's level 3 attack where she flattens you. Its especially annoying in Tag mode because that forces you to lose a lot of time.
4:26 I haven't played riders in a while so I can't speak to this point, but I will say that most sonic games could use a more engaging way to rail-grind. Adding a button press would do wonders for most sonic experiences.
When I wanna board a grind rail, I just double-tap the X button (or the A button, for non-PS2 players). No matter how far I am from the rail, as long as I reach it during that specific jump, it never fails to latch me on. In other words, it seems more like a toggle than anything else, which imo is probably the intent. After all, you may not always want to grind a rail that just so happens to be in the path of your jump.
So... i just found it, had some stuff to do, and i saw all your other videos. I lied. Im binging your channel for the next week or so lol. I see a lot of bangers. Subbed!
I remember having to beat the story mode in one sitting every time I played it because I had no memory card. I even tried leaving the GameCube on while I left for school so it wouldn’t reset
4:40 Aye G, Imma keep it a stack with you, we were under the age of 12 when we played this ain't nobody was watching a stinkin tutorial! We just wanted to play the game and find out on the way down.
This game looks so much fun! I remember trying it out last year, but just couldnt get a damn grip on how it should be played, i think imma giv it a Round 2 now after understand just how this game SHOULD be played lol! And yes, me want Zero Gravity NOW!
Duuuuude this game was a huge part of my childhood. I begged my dad to get this for me in 4th grade, and when he FINALLY caved I played the sh*t out of this game! Zero Gravity was good, too. The only problem I have with the series is that they include skating in the game but don't include Beat from Jet Set Radio as one of the secret characters.
How like when jumping to make a trick you can also choose if you want to go more horizontally or vertically depending on which detection you are holding the joystick, making it possible to get to shortcuts
GoatDubA back with the fire editing! 🔥🔥🔥 I can't say much about this game since I haven't played it, but I can talk about the music and story. For the first, the music is great. I don't listen to it very often, but it gives off a lot of personality, which I'm a big fan of. The story, however, is where I have problems. From what I remember, the interpretations of Sonic and Amy are poo poo garbage. Sonic is too jerky for my taste, and Amy is just... well, fangirl. I'd be down to play this game, though, if SEGA ports it to modern hardware because I don't want to HAVE to emulate this game just to play it. Knowing SEGA, though, I'm not expecting anything of the sort any time soon, which is a shame, but oh well, I guess.
Sonic Riders was my first Sonic game and is still m favourite. I remember my brother and I getting an old ps2 with a bunch of old games on it and one day we just wanted to check out Sonic Riders. And when I first turned it on amd started playing it I instantly liked EVERYTHING. The design, the tracks, the ost, everything was just sitting for me. I recently got Zero Gravity on my dolphin emulator and it is a great game, but soundtrack doesnt slap as hard as it did in original game (even though it is still very good and I really love some of the sountracks). The story is definitley better and more fun in Zero Gravity but the problem I have with Zero is that it doesn't really have any rules. Okay, I have decent playing but I still didn't master the game fully like I did Riders 1, but idk, when I'm racing, everyone just gets ahead of me out of nowhere, or are just faster than me and I cant catch up with them. This might be a skill issue lol, but I definitley liked mechanics in the first game better. Plus, it's my first one, and nothing will be ahead of it, I just wish they made more tracks and characters for the first game.
i've got to thank the plenty of TH-camrs i've watched that broke down all the main mechanics of this game, without them i wouldn't be able to find my love for the first Riders game 🙏 btw heyo call me sonic speed the way i Hit you-- 4:35 yeah, don't worry about it, i was one of those kids who had no idea how the grinding worked, and btw the tutorial is so deep hidden in the main menu what the hell was up with that? no wonder people couldn't properly get to learn this game, sure hope somebody got fired for *that* blunder
there’s tournament edition and dx(though that’s no longer in development) for riders and regravitified for zero gravity, but neither have custom tracks, they just rebalance the game and make it more fun(or totally overhaul the game in case of ZG)
4:50 Regarding the tutorial and you not missing it, dw you ain't stupid! the tutorial video only appears if you leave the game on start screen for a prolonged period of time!
This might be late but if you're going to play zero gravity be sure to play the remaster version on dolphin it fixes alot of gear and adds more music from other sega titles
There any spiritual successors to the original Sonic Riders in development? Or a Sonic Riders fangame (not counting the mods like Tournament Edition and DX)?
There needs to be a petition for a return for sonic riders….like I’m tired of the kart niche, hoverboards are sonics thing, karts are Mario and crash bandicoot
Good news : Sonic future is bright Now sonic team and sega hired alot of third party devs studios to expand the franchise and bring back old sonic genres like the riders series , sonic party games like sonic rumble ( but not just mobile ) , more good spin offs etc.... 😁 Big projects on the franchise are back just like in the 2000s but this time it will be BETTER. If a new official riders game my hope : Scrap the kinect thingy No cutscenes images wth garbage renders Actual cutscenes + CGI Bring back unique character models Gameplay polish A tutorial Better execution of the story Bring back game modes No bloated & complicated gameplay from zero gravity Better dialogue execution Good peak music again Goofyness
With all due respect, I have to disagree with learning the game in a normal race first. Story mode has a solid difficulty progression, even for someone new. Sure some races further ahead are more difficult(Wave at Babylon Garden for me I had to restart a few times, even when I came back to the game as someone actually good at it)but even a kid could eventually beat the story mode. Hell, I did. Besides, you don't even need to WIN the first few races, which is good cause it makes it more beginner friendly. The controls were easy enough for me to catch onto as a kid, I really think that the story mode is suitable.
I don’t disagree at all, but many voiced how the the story mode is “unfair.” So I think learning the game before even starting could help someone from getting a bad impression the main story’s difficulty. But yeah I do agree, it’s very well balanced difficulty wise.
Cool video, tho fr I 1000000% would say as cool as the games base mechanics are. It's so backhanded. One hand it's cool, but there's always a buuuuuuuuuuut there's this weird thing with every cool thing. I wouldn't say it gets it right per say. But laid the groundwork for uh. Not much considering how different zg is.

The tutorial is hidden away in a menu
@Ismatic1906 I didn't even need the tutorial though, I figured it out myself... that's why I'm confused...
@@Ismatic1906 that makes sense, I never had mario kart
Another thing you failed to mention are some of the various boards you can get. One of my favorites is the Opa opa which I use on knuckles a lot. What this board does is it makes you ALWAYS have a level 3 attack which is akin to that of amy's level 3 attack where she flattens you. Its especially annoying in Tag mode because that forces you to lose a lot of time.
This Game it's Even better when you play it with mods like Sonic Riders DX or Tournament Edition
4:26 I haven't played riders in a while so I can't speak to this point, but I will say that most sonic games could use a more engaging way to rail-grind. Adding a button press would do wonders for most sonic experiences.
I love the first 2 riders game though i think the first one is better even if i like playing zero gravity more. And both have banger osts
I loved riding turbulence and doing tricks off of it. I thought it was the coolest mechanic.
So... i just found it, had some stuff to do, and i saw all your other videos. I lied. Im binging your channel for the next week or so lol. I see a lot of bangers. Subbed!
I’m gonna show youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ✨✨✨✨
I remember having to beat the story mode in one sitting every time I played it because I had no memory card. I even tried leaving the GameCube on while I left for school so it wouldn’t reset
4:40 Aye G, Imma keep it a stack with you, we were under the age of 12 when we played this ain't nobody was watching a stinkin tutorial! We just wanted to play the game and find out on the way down.
Now I respect that logic
This game looks so much fun! I remember trying it out last year, but just couldnt get a damn grip on how it should be played, i think imma giv it a Round 2 now after understand just how this game SHOULD be played lol!
And yes, me want Zero Gravity NOW!
Technically Sonic Riders was the first boost game.
Sonic Rush?
No. Technically Sonic heroes was the first boost game. The special stages had the boost in it.
Sonic riders need a sequel who cares if it's 2024 a sequel or remake would be awesome.
does he know
@@GDubA Does he?
Duuuuude this game was a huge part of my childhood. I begged my dad to get this for me in 4th grade, and when he FINALLY caved I played the sh*t out of this game! Zero Gravity was good, too. The only problem I have with the series is that they include skating in the game but don't include Beat from Jet Set Radio as one of the secret characters.
How like when jumping to make a trick you can also choose if you want to go more horizontally or vertically depending on which detection you are holding the joystick, making it possible to get to shortcuts
Also… SUUUUUPPPERRR SOOONNNIIIIIIIIC SPEEEEEEEEEED
True!
so cursed fact for everyone:
There WAS a Riders Mod for SRB2 somewhere. In an alternate universe, instead of SRB2Kart, we would have had Blast Riders.
sonic riders needs a comeback
GoatDubA back with the fire editing! 🔥🔥🔥
I can't say much about this game since I haven't played it, but I can talk about the music and story.
I honestly think Sonic Rivals needs to make a return
I just learned how to grind on the rails because of your video 💀 I’ve played the game since it came out and only did it like 3 times ever
SUUUUPER SOOOOOONIC SPEEEEEEED

IM GONNA SHOW YOOUUUU
When the temp is exceeding the 90s i think of sand ruins
AM GONNAAAAA LIKE THIS VIDEO
Sonic riders 1 yes! I need to play again!
Why the opening hit so hard
If you truly want the best Sonic Riders experience, try out Sonic Riders DX 2.0.
i've got to thank the plenty of TH-camrs i've watched that broke down all the main mechanics of this game, without them i wouldn't be able to find my love for the first Riders game 🙏
btw heyo call me sonic speed the way i Hit you--
4:35 yeah, don't worry about it, i was one of those kids who had no idea how the grinding worked, and btw the tutorial is so deep hidden in the main menu what the hell was up with that? no wonder people couldn't properly get to learn this game, sure hope somebody got fired for *that* blunder
For sure.
HEY EVERYONE WELCOME BACK TO THE GAMESCAGE, AND TODAY, AND ONLY TODA-
@@GDubA RAW
Need this and Zero Gravity to get their own CTGP equivalents
Or a rerelease with online play
there’s tournament edition and dx(though that’s no longer in development) for riders and regravitified for zero gravity, but neither have custom tracks, they just rebalance the game and make it more fun(or totally overhaul the game in case of ZG)
@@emperortoho I know about those
I'm talking specifically new stages
@@HazeX2 riders x has a bunch of stage mods, there’ll prolly be more once riders evo(the godot port/continuation) comes out
Just back into this game andade do I want a remaster or remake of the original
still high on hopium for a true sonic riders sequel
4:50 Regarding the tutorial and you not missing it, dw you ain't stupid! the tutorial video only appears if you leave the game on start screen for a prolonged period of time!
Well.... There's also the gallery/theater. The instruction booklet...... Or a simple search on Google or TH-cam.
Lol ME who went right into story mode with zero practice races under my belt👀
This might be late but if you're going to play zero gravity be sure to play the remaster version on dolphin it fixes alot of gear and adds more music from other sega titles
4:42 there was a tutorial? Never noticed
Good news :
Sonic future is bright
Now sonic team and sega hired alot of third party devs studios to expand the franchise and bring back old sonic genres like the riders series , sonic party games like sonic rumble ( but not just mobile ) , more good spin offs etc....
😁
Big projects on the franchise are back just like in the 2000s but this time it will be BETTER.
If a new official riders game my hope :
Scrap the kinect thingy
No cutscenes images wth garbage renders
Actual cutscenes + CGI
Bring back unique character models
Gameplay polish
A tutorial
Better execution of the story
Bring back game modes
No bloated & complicated gameplay from zero gravity
Better dialogue execution
Good peak music again
Goofyness
Please review zero gravity
I'm actually editing that video right now!
@@GDubA I love you
I so wish I could play this 😭😭
What features are playing with in Mario Kart 8 because if you play with out assistance you do have control.
You should try burnout
Is this game underrated?
I'd say so
CATCH ME IF YOU CAAAAAAN
……I can boost while drifting?
Yep

Also not quite sure what fan game you're referring to, but I've probably not played it.
@@GDubA oops ignore that part, you're good and I joined the server I see, very cool stuff, you're amazing brother!
So do you defend this game against all the hated criticism? Like the slippery, floaty controls and whatnot?
I don’t see how the game is slippery??

Dont play any of the sequels…
I don't plan on playing the horror that is Free Riders, but I loved the heck out of Zero Gravity. Even made a review on it if that is of any interest.
