Super Hurricanes and Typhoons

    Hurricanes, typhoons, tropical cyclones: they are creatures of tropical seas, sweeping up heat laden waters, converting it to wind, rain, and waves. Why do a rare few evolve into colossal monsters, that leave in their wake a trail of destruction, death, and despair? Do we now face a rising tide of Super Hurricanes and Typhoons?
    One reason is that more and more people are moving to coastlines around the world, drawn by a combination of jobs and lifestyle. In the United States, for example, 39% of the population lives in coastal counties.
    A Columbia University report takes a global look at this trend by identifying major disaster hot spots: the east coast of North America, Bangladesh, the Philippines, the east coast of China. These hurricane-prone coastlines, with their dense population centers, hold enormous potential for economic loss and loss of life.
    To make matters worse, the oceans have gotten steadily warmer over the last few decades, adding potency to the hurricane's fuel. Sea levels are expected to rise by as much as a meter by the end of the century, increasing the risks of storm surge.
    As more people pack the coastlines, man and nature are in the midst of an excrutiating head-on collision. Hurricane Ike slammed into Galveston in 2008. The cost in 2010 dollars: 28 billion. Andrew hit Miami in 1992. 45 billion. Sandy swept into New Jersey in 2012. 60 billion. Katrina in New Orleans: 106 billion. Not to mention the loss of thousands of lives.

    A very good film. Beautifully designed. No schizoid editing, no star war bombs and schrapnel, no Carmina Burana screaming music. And without all that crap this film is far more powerful and scientifically educational. Also aesthetically beautiful. I am always struck by the similarity in structure between the hurricane and a spiral galaxy. I am also impressed that the film points out how over population is such an important factor in the equation. That is the umbrella issue that determines the degree by which all natural disasters affect the world of man. Global warming is a direct consequence of human overdevelopment and mismanagement of the planet.

      The globe started warming well before man started to walk.
      Why lie? We have accelerated the warming yes; but no we didn’t start the warming.

    I've only been through Iselle(category 2/3 in July/August 2014) in Hawaii and the tropical storms that followed. (Now about to see Darby) I can't imagine what category 4 and 5 hurricanes can do...I hope I never do. Was anyone else there for Iselle?

  • @FloozieOne
    @FloozieOne ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been through 3 hurricanes now, (you'd think I would pick better places to live), and although they were exciting when they first were building, by the time they were in full force it was terrifying. A hurricane has a voice all it's own, it isn't from hitting objects and having sound reverberate, it is a low-pitched roar with higher pitched bits mixed in. Did I mention that it is loud, really loud, you can't hear some standing right next to you. It really does sound like great beast trying to get in.

    Well if more people are now living on the coast, it makes sense that storm surge damage will be worse. All of those people on the coast cause the beaches to sink down a bit, hence storm surge will be worse.

So you can go ahead and start watching your video without a long wait, and it'll clear up to a higher resolution as it's playing. Loading is usually faster than playing, so it works quite well. Netflix also uses this method.

    • @hansmiseur3025
      @hansmiseur3025 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Jetstream x Tornados are less predictable and much more intense but on a much smaller scale. It's like the difference between a sledgehammer blow on the chest and a pinprick through the heart.

    • @harryandruschak2843
      @harryandruschak2843 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jetstream x Not really. A Tornado is more focused in its path of destruction by high winds, yes. Winds can be higher then those of hurricanes, yes.
      HOWEVER, hurricanes are not limited in destruction to high winds alone. They cover a MUCH larger area. As they move ashore, there is massive destruction from the storm surge. Once inland, all the moisture comes down as massive rains, with massive floods, massive mudslides, and massive water supply contamination.
      A search of Wikipedia and other internet resources will enable you to compare the monetary damages of tornadoes as compared to hurricanes.
      Here in the US, tornadoes get plenty of TV coverage. The huge toll of typhoons and monsoons do not, since they happen in foreign countries.

      +Jetstream x Tornados are more destructive in smaller areas and occur over landmasses. Hurricanes are much larger and cause destruction when they encounter landmasses after building their energy over large masses of open water.
      Why?
      Because physics and chemistry.

      Hurricanes can turn normal to nasty in seconds. During Hurricane Earl I was watching The Weather Channel and in seconds a strong rainband out the power and the brezze began to slow pick up from 11pm until 6 am the next day the brezze howled and the streets looks like rivers. Like how Belize has a lot of trees even in Belize City it looked like a village in the sea.

    • @SargeRho

      szeredai akos Exept it isn't crap, but well proven by now that our CO2 emissions are accelerating the rate at which the planet is warming.

    • @szeredaiakos
      @szeredaiakos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kdc43 well, that is not true. i am interested in the truth, therefore i usually double check anything that seems to be out of order. that did included the CO2 crap when the inconvenient truth aired. you know, i am not sheep to believe what people tell me. i am not like Sarge Rho. BTW, Sarge Rho, can you link to me the paper that proves that. remember, correlation is not a proof of causality. and i accept only hard science with equations and numbers. i want to see radiance, absorption bands, the energy calculations on those bands against the mean gradient density of the CO2 in the atmosphere.
      the word well proven means nothing, proof does.

    "Whether or not ocean levels rise, or storms become more powerful" - those statements made the documentary stand out from the usual "CLIMATE CHANGE IS GOING TO KILL US ALL!!!" scare-mentaries. This was surprisingly (pleasantly so) well written and well done. Simple, straightforward, and informative without flash, spinning camera angles and hype. Well done, indeed.

    deadly yet beautiful ... I have been what you might call a hurricane chaser for about 16 years now. I just do it from home. And I am no less excited about it today than what I was 16 years ago. Actually probably even more so now because we have better technology Better satellites to monitor and watch the storm

      I esteem them so too. I fancy experiencing being inside the eye of a tropical cyclone and beholding its spectacular, colossal eyewall vis-a-vis.I had dreamt twice of being inside the eye of a tropical cyclone.
