I had a strange thought last night” I’ve never seen St Elmo’s fire, it’s got a good cast, should I watch that movie?” I didn’t watch it- but I did discover this fucking gem of a channel . Thanks Morgan great work!
I LOVE this movie!!!! So many funny bits!!! So much quotable lines!!! We walk around the house repeating so much of this movie! Go that way…and if something gets in the way…turn.
I had forgotten how unbelievably silly this film could be at times. Also, Elizabeth Daily is an actress I remember most clearly, for some reason, from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
You went to the same film school as Damien Slade! He was amazing on this film, hahahaha, he was so funny. He is my favorite character of the film. It is so cool you were able to talk to him.
I cannot conceive how Curtis Armstrong made this movie in late 1984 (where he looks like 20-ish) then he appears as a cast regular in Moonlighting in 1985, looking a full 15+ years older? What _happened?_ 😨
Love it. Watched this movie over and over with my friends back in the day. And now me and those same friends watch Hot Tub Time Machine at least once when we get together every year. 🤩
E.G. Daily keeps showing up everywhere in these beloved 80s movies, either acting or singing. If people of the future judged 80s culture by the teen films, they'd assume she was the biggest pop star of a whole generation.
Another great review! However I have to disagree that this one has no interest in being heart felt. I feel like they put a lot of effort into the relationship between Lane and Monique. Also I felt like the father's attempt to connect with Lane was a bit touching, " Come on Lane, mellow off ". And the mother was a terrible cook, but she put so much effort into it, so it was from the heart. There's heart there, you just have to look for it.
In the late 80s my dad took us to a restaurant where I pretended to chop and snort my Jell-O. He looked at me kinda strange and sort of laughed and asked where I learned that. I said "Better off Dead, man!"
I had a paper route too, and some people would do really silly things to not pay. There were a couple of people that hid in their houses and pretended not to be home so they didn't have to pay the monthly fee on time.
Such a good review! I thought this film was cheesy in places, but a unique film. I will admit, I was not sold on the addition of the claymation in the film. Thank you so much for the analysis.
Same thing happened to me and my sisters. How people can bail on kids still amazes me. My dad almost killed the dude who came to shake us down when the subs didn't pay. The only things than bailing is being the guy who collects from kids who end up doing it for free.
Im in doubt if I saw this film or not. I think I saw it in cable and it wasn't that memorable that I could remember it. The absurd-surreal parts probably is the one thing that would make me watch this film again.
Yuji Okumoto owns a Hawaiian restaurant here in Seattle, and apparently is happy to stop by your table to say hi if he happens to be there while you're dining. This is on my must-do list.
This movie is definitely one of my go-to 80's flicks. My wife and I just saw it again a few nights ago. Kind of a feel good rom-com.... Another one you should do a vid on if you get the time is Secret Admierer. Not sure if you saw that one but if you did then you'll understand why I said to maybe to one of these Gen-Ex vids for it.
It’s full of sticky memes like Steven Williams’ (21 Jump Street & The X-Files) “Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that.” It’s a movie I was aware about (Two dollars!) and only caught glimpses of (Showtime or The Movie Channel on satellite) but didn’t see in full until I was older.
I still have NO idea what problem John Cusack had with this movie, or _what he imagined it was gonna be while making it??_ A really fun movie imo - Wots yer prob JC? (I see you make this point yourself, later on)

This was actually one of my favorite films from the 80's. I loved this one as well as One Crazy Summer, also starring Cusack. Just pure entertainment.
I quite often say (when appropriate) "I want my $2!". Nobody ever gets my reference.
That line is classic.
Pearls before swine
The owner of the burger joint was also the villain from Porky’s.
One of my all time Favs! ♡
"I WANT MY $2"😂
"One Way Love" is actually one of my favorite 80's songs. Elizabeth Daily also made it into the Billboard Hot 100 at least once with "Say It, Say It".

Love and hate this film because of things at the time i saw it but you bring out details that make it a warm thought. Thank you
This movie ranks up there with Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds. The garbage truck scene is hilarious and could not be made today.
it’s a damn shame

One of my favorite songs of hers is Mind Over Matter from summer school.
I adore this movie. So many hilarious side characters. Charles De Mar is the funniest sidekick ever.
I agree. The scene at the school dance where he can’t get over the insulting joke from Stalin makes me cry with laughter every time I watch it.

This movie was hard to find, even back in the late 80's

Taylor Negron was always funny, even in his smallest bit roles he'd give you a good laugh.
I remember seeing this on cable when I was a kid and that scene where the food like concoction slides off his plate destroyed me.

Lanes parents are amazing in this. Curtis Armstrong is also fantastic!

Gen-X fail for me: I've never actually seen this movie in its entirety. But now I'm really sorry that I missed Yuji Okumoto doing Cosell riffs.

@@MorganRichter Wait, it's not the tiki place that was near downtown is it?
Fantastic. Subscribed.
I loved Eek The Cat. This movie was great too

Give me a minute to see if anything came up
Dan Schneider caught me off guard. I wonder what gen xers know about his reputation now.
"I want my 2 dollars!"
I've worked with Cusack. I used to be a fan...till I actually worked with the guy. Linda Hamilton pinched my butt. Just saying.
Uh oh. I've heard rumors that Cusack is... difficult. Sorry to have the rumors confirmed; he's a very entertaining actor.
