The dark /l/ comes after a vowel or diphthong in a syllable. It has a slightly different articulatory position than the initial position "light" /l/ so it is taught after even l-blends. Generally, teaching initial /l/ and l-blends would generalize to the other positions in words. One tip, when producing the "dark" /l/, make sure your tongue tip is tighter against the roof of your mouth just behind your top teeth, compared to initial or light /l/. Good luck!
