Steve, it's Chris Long here with SSE Setup. Just wanted to comment and say Great video. :) Also wanted to let you and others know that thanks to feedback from Access developers like yourself, I've tried to really improve and simplify the Access deployment even further with SSE Setup since this video was posted. Now when you start a new project and specify an Access DB, you will be prompted to open an Access deployment guide that walks you through step-by-step. It also will start with settings good for Access db's, including automatically starting with the Access prerequisite selected. Another big change is that by default now SSE Setup CAN use the Program Files folder for Access db's - When you specify an Access db, SSE Setup will set itself to automatically change the security of your install folder under Program Files so that it can generally be used without issues (though using Root Drive as shown in the video is also a perfectly viable option). I've also solved Internet Updating related issues specific to Access and even improved the auto Trusted Location thing further to now cover all users and not just the current user. Thanks again for your time in making this video to help people! If you or anyone else has any further feedback regarding Access deployment, I'm always open to suggestions!
Hey Steve! I know this is really late but I just want to say I appreciate all your videos and they have been nothing but informative! If you don't mind, may I ask a question regarding the installation package? Would you require MS Access on your computer to use and install this installation package? P.S. I am fairly new to Access and SQL server but I am learning so much from you!
Hello Steve, I have a question is it possible that user can SaveAs the main Access File to another location and then they do not need our distributed version anymore? is it preventing an user to do that? is that possible?
Hi Steve , wow this is one of the most important videos i ve ever seen. We are in the GoLife status for our vba product. Your video is from 2015 . Is there any update ? Thanks so much Steve for a wonderful job. I wish all the best Leonardo
hello .1-please i must install or past the northwind folder on the drive c ? 2-i must also create the xml file and 2 subfolders attachements and logo and backup? i have not understand help me please
Steve, This App is Working Wonders and As Discussed aearlier i am working around still figureing out how to relink the backend file on computer, being a Code Newbie is hard! also. i saw a Video Regarding using an app to generate a binding exe and also to add a Licensee and activation to the DB... i was wondering if i could work a way around these so i can actually get the control over clients.
so ive created a nice setup file, thanks to your video... THANKS!!!, but now after installing my program only opens when i open it with access but doesnt work in runtime... ??? ( get a error saying the database is Unrecognized Database Format ) file i created is a accde file to hide my sourcecode... also found something about 32bit and 64bit being the problem... im using 64ibt. i`ve looked in multiple forums but i cant really get a answer, what do you prefer, publish a accde file or publish a accdb with runtime?
Hi Steve, Thanks for this video, however how do I attached the additional URL address for the Microsoft Access runtime download link? on the Edit URL prerequisite tab? is it on the Download.Exe or the manual download webpage box?
Thank you for this video and entire Access series. What is the file extension that was installed in C:\Northwind1.0 folder? SSE Setup took standard accdb file. You mentioned something about creating accde file. Does SSE Setup converts accdb to accde or just copies accdb to installation folder?
Thanks Steve. this is Awesome. I installed Hyper-V but cannot copy and paste files from host to virtual the way you do. you make it sound easy. Have you got any videos on setting up hyper-V VM? this will be awesome. (I just cannot believe how easy you make it for us to follow on. I really appreciate your effort)
Thanks for the obvious effort .... but my question is if the database contains macros, the database does not work after the installation is completed, is there any way to solve this problem
Steve I have watched most of your Access videos and find them extremely helpful even reviewing some basic elements that I have known for years. My question touches on an issue you did not address in this video concerning Installation Packaging. Access db file type. If you install as per the video and the user has full version of Access, won't that provide them with ability to change tables and queries? Thanks again
Well, if you're trying to distribute just the front end to your users, and presumably they already have access to the back end, then you don't need to include the back end file. However, if you are sending your application out with both the front and back end, then there isn't any way to get around sending them the table data. You can password protect the back end file and embed the password in the front end connections, but beyond that no, you cannot fully eliminate their access to the table data. I honestly don't know how you could anyway.
Hi Steve, Do you know if you can get SSE Setup to install the Access Runtime automatically if Access isn’t on the deployment PC? Means not having the user to say - 'bugger' and having to go and download the runtime and install it before installing your software. One or two steps that they don't need to think about. Cheers, Ven
Steve, great work! I highly anticipate your videos and appreciate your willingness to share your expertise. I been trying to figure out how I am going to deploy my frontends properly so I don't have to constantly update everyone's frontend. I haven't got to experience SSE Setup yet, but will this program handle this type of scenario? I went through your full video and saw the "Edit/Publish IUI". Will this work if we have a SharePoint environment? The fed gov environment is very restrictive for installing new software. Trying to wrap my head around using SSE for pushing out updated frontends. While I haven't been able to see video 40, I was a little sad seeing the word "Conclusion". Thank you again. Your videos are the best on the Access topic. If you don't know the answers, no big deal. I am trying to find the best direction for my frontend management.
+Chris McDavid Hey Chris. First of all, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the videos have been so helpful. I enjoy using Access a lot because it is a very robust environment for creating business applications, but it does have it's limitations. It was a great stepping stone in my career and I hope that others can do the same. But for me personally it's time to move on. Access isn't an industry leading technology, and in my opinion it has been abused and neglected by Microsoft. It may not be around for long, but that sentiment has been around for a while. As for the publishing capabilities of SSE Setup, yes you probably could use Sharepoint as your web host of the IUI file, but I would argue against it. You need a location on the web that will always be available. If for whatever reason someone hasn't properly credentialed themselves into Sharepoint prior to the attempt to reading the IUI file the process could error out. The whole process of using the web update module deserves a video of it's own, but there are too many pitfalls one could stumble upon that just can't be covered in a video and require research by the individual. The documentation is quite good for the process though.
+Programming I would agree that it has been neglected, opting for SQL Server builds and such. I came from SQL Server (only) and had to adapt due to the environment I am in (learning a lot about Access and how powerful it can be). Access still seems to be a great way to "prove" a rapidly built projects. I am basically doing this and then will transition to SQL Server and the arduous task of building forms the way Access does it so easily. I will read through the process and see if I can make it work out. Your answer was right on point. You've been a great teacher :)
Hi Steve great job! I really could use it. Do you have a video to update my existing developed Access application with internet? (Maybe with version control, optional) Thanks for all leonardo
thanks, only one small problem how to include access runtime without the need to download from internet as local networks that do not enable users to go online? this avialable only through package solution or you another solution?
Steve, this is very informative. We have an organization that is opening in various parts of the US and this is a great tool for distribution! But, can you use both the Web and Mail? Again GREAT MAN!!
hi steve ,,,, great work >> what about the back end what I mean.. can i give the project to the client like this .. or doing the installation package after linking to back end ??? thank you so much
+aboazoozxavi If you have a back end, you probably won't be distributing it in an installation file. You are more likely to have a SQL Server hosting your back end data on the network. That's not something you're going to be packaging up. This is more for stand alone apps, or just to distribute the front end. If you are distributing a front end to your domain users then it's a good idea to avoid using DSN's and instead use the ADO and DAO objects in VBA so you can establish a connection to the database directly in code. However, if your administrator is knowledgeable enough, you can set up a DSN through group policy to make sure everyone has that back end connection.
I know this is a pretty old video at this point but I've been trying to find a guide for the internet updater via SSE Setup for access and so far no luck. It would be really amazing to have a "check for updates" button on my front end as that's the only thing I'm packing since my back end is on a network share. My setup is still very much in a beta phase but I wanted to get my colleagues opinions on it so as feedback comes in I could be making changes to the front end at a fairly rapid pace and a notification that there's an update would be invaluable. Any tips would be incredibly appreciated. This is my first venture into Access so everything is a learning process at this point.
Hi TJ, I know this is a pretty old comment at this point :) and you've probably already figured it out or moved on, but using the Internet Updater via SSE Setup with Access is really fairly simple. Just follow the "Interfacing Your Software With The Internet Update Module" guide in help. You will need to use VBA to run the updater program and wait for it to finish. You can find any number of VBA code snippets to run a program and wait for it to finish online. Just put a "Check for Update" button and have it run the updater according to what the guide tells you to do and then follow the rest of the guide and you should be up and running in no time. Hope that helps!
Hello Steve, Hope you're doing well First of all, I just want to thank for your extreme efforts and applaud you for your methods (they're great !) I think this comment is a bit late than every other comment in here but I hope I can find an answer to my Q. Well I have an access database split to FE and BE of course and I want to share it on a local host (Using SQL server I guess ) I want all the clients to access the FE_DB simultansly and can add/delete records. and of course all the data must be conserved and updated in the original BE file. Is this possible using the sql server methodes ? Or is there any other option i can use ? ( I watched until the 10th episode and i don't really know if you talked about this in other videos except the Overview in lesson 2). Thank you so much Steve !
Yes, in fact that's the whole point of this advanced series. You have a SQL Server somewhere on the network that contains all of the data to be shared. Then you distribute the front end to everyone on your network.
Well steve can i ask you one more thing ? The front end will be distributed in the network as Read only and then every user makes his copy. but will it be always linked to the be eventhough it's just a copy ?
Hi, I have followed your video to create a distribution version of my access based app. On the laptop that I used which has access 2016 running on it, I was able to run the executable file of my app and users did not have access to the app design and codes etc. But when I installed the same app on another computer with Windows 7 and with office 365 installed, the app installation was completed successfully but users are able to access the codes, forms and reports designs and can make changes. This rendered the app completely useless as it was not secured to be used that way. How can I ensure that in all circumstances, users don't have access to the design and codes of the apps. What could I have done wrong in this case. I need help
I did not have to do anything specially. I just followed the video and made sure the right runtime files were attached to the installation. I believe the environment played a role in ensuring that users had no access to the app design. To think of it this is the only reason for me to make distribution packages. Users should not have access to make changes to the app design
Steve, first let me apologize for the statement made about the "modal", It work's just find. I don't know what I did. Now, can you tell me how, if possible to disable the privacy option in access or the file button.. Thanks a lot sir in advance.
Steve This wizard is working wonders. but i have a simple problem which might not be that simple Problem : i have a perfectly working split database i was wondering if i could do a installation of split database using SSE without worrying about location and tables re-linking issue with split databases. Ps. i want to provide FE updates and other changes as per requirement. so a split database is kinda a essential. Kindly Help me.
Not really since people might install the file to different locations on their desktop. The best thing to do is have some VBA code that goes out and asks people where the back end file is then relinks to it when the application is ran and the links don't work.
VPN's are not really for a programming channel. That's more of an IT thing. I just did a search for how to setup a windows vpn on youtube and came up with this list: th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=setting+up+a+windows+vpn

Thanks a ton! Your best Steve...
Hi Steve
Excellent Tutorials, Thanks a lot Steve for uploading this videos, it’s really helpful, never found such good videos.

Hi,
my question is, if you are installing a new version of a packaged database over an old one, does the old database get uninstalled automatically?
It depends on your configuration. Look at the settings carefully.
How to change ICON file accdb?
Why does the Access program become a read-only setup
