Fir or pine trees roots work as a field expediant replacement for twine. If you're that worried about the peg falling out you can heat up some pitch and use it as wood glue before you hammer the peg(s).
P.S. Off the cuff thought. The Gamble House might interest you if you really interior wood trim. It's unique but in a good way, not a weird way.

'Just a thought ... Scott and Matt (kentucky Bal. & Demo Ran.) contents' getting pretty dry. It's kind of sad to watch the decline. If you could get some of those "goofy" guys to be able to survive outdoors, it might show others how simple it is to get out and enjoy nature. and there's also the colab rating punch as well, obviously. 'Just a thought .... 'congrads on the hitch-up. L. Harder.

One thing I always heard, is that wood can retract around metal nails and to a lesser extent, screws. Wooden pegs last longer because they react the same way together. Part of the reason why the Northern European Stav style churches would last for centuries are the all wooden construction.

Shawn, 2 things - 1) you could have used the extra tent materiel as a ground cloth, with reflective side up to reflect body heat back to you; 2) We just had Boy Scouts do their winter campout this past weekend! We cover many of the subjects that you covered here, pluss how to stay warm. The average temp for this weekend was -2 degrees F! That's not the coldest we have camped in, but close. There were an estimated 1000 Scouts at this campout.

Excellent project! If you think about it this is probably how early settlers explored the Northwest Territories in the 18th century (think the Lewis and Clark expeditions). They had basic tools, oilcloth, wool blankets, but cordage was hard to come by unless you made it yourself from homespun fibers such as flax, hemp, or wool, cotton was a luxury. Pegging was a common construction technique for cabins and furniture. I love it, please continue down this path...

My hiking buddy lost his pack with most of our cordage. We came across an old, fallen house. We used old rusty nails instead of cordage for our shelter. It held well ... so we gathered several of those nails and used them for the rest of the hike. I still have a few of those nails in my storage house to remind me of that trip. I think, for grins, I will try the auger/peg configuration. A great video. Thanks much!

Hey there Devil Dog. Once again, I learned something new. I truly appreciate all the work you do. I'll hopefully be getting a cold handle skillet and a striker here soon. Not sure about getting a hoodie though. I'm also a Marine, but I only made it to Lance Corporal. I don't want the hassle of someone accusing me of "Stolen Valor" for wearing a Corporal insignia. Even though it's not a uniform, the world is full of idiots that don't know any better. Great video. I always take #36 bank line with me in my pack. It's just a convenience that is sometimes overlooked. Semper Fi Brother.

Papaschuette: I made it to Sarge before I got fed up with Mickey Mouse and his merry band of cartoon turds in the corps tho I loved my time in. I am also a retired Sales Mrktg guy some said guru some said a pokey ole sales man. Anyway the corps only owns the stripes with the crossed rifles insignia. The Cpl has crossed logs and a fire so its different. If the Cpl offered the actual Marine insignia he’d have to pay the corps a bunch of money up front plus a percentage for the privilege. (I looked into it yrs ago.) I’m sure you’d be fine and as a Sarge I would ‘t be offended at all, the logos represents the Cpl’s Corner not the corps. Just my two cents, I’m waiting to order my Cpl hoodie. Semper Fi stay frosty…

Those wooden nails actually work well. I had a friend who lived in a building that was old (try pre-revolutionary way era old) and it was built entirely of those wooden pegs/nails.. damn thing also had a hoist built into it (it was originally a warehouse).. the only nails were the recent remolding.. but the main structure.. wooden pegs/nails. It was probably the most sturdy structure I've ever seen.. They an last much longer than you think.. though admittedly, your stuff deals with weather and that was internal so out of the weather.. but outside of that.. Don't knock it.. that's the construction used for a great many of years in our history..

Outstand video as always. Couple of small points however. 1. If you angled the dowel into the tree, even by 10+ degrees upwards, you could use the angular space for your ridge pole instead of having to bore another small hole for a pencil thin wood peg. Saves you time. 2. The amount of tarp that you bunched up against the back of the shelter, could you not unbunch some of it and use it as a ground sheet. In answer to a question I have been asked numerous times over the years as a Forester. No folks, boring into a tree does not "hurt" the tree. They have no central nervous system.

    1. Cool video. Love the double meaning "cordless" shelter.
    2. You could sharpen one side of the black steel pipe and cut perfectly sized pegs no?
    3. Use the auger on your victorinox to drill pilot holes for the wooden nails.
    4. Use an L7 branch as a handle for the scotch auger like an old school bit holder. Simply hold the scotch eye and crank away increasing your bit speed.
    5. I think you should just say the first 50 people to watch the video can buy a cup and bottle set. 😂 Seriously checked like 30 min after video dropped and they were gone AF.
Anyway just some thoughts. Thanks for the work over the last 200+ weeks! It just wouldn't be Sunday without a corporal video!

If someone says it can't be done, Shawn makes it happen lol.....this scenario hasn't really crossed my mind, honestly. It's good to see someone with know-how or forethought actually pull it off. Well done, sir.
I'm about 300 miles west of you, and our night was sub-zero with windchills in the low -20s.......what a difference distance makes, no matter how small. Go home and appreciate your new bride, then start doing that E-4 mafia stuff you do so well 😁
Keep up the good work.....and once again your video dropped while I was at work. No sweet Etsy store stuff for me again lol

    A great video, as always.
Two things I would have done differently, though, would have been to use a wedge hammered into the dowel securing the ridge pole to the tree, like what's done with axe heads securing them to the handle.
The other thing would be draping the tarp over the ridge pole, instead of putting a small wooden spike/nail through the grommets into the pole.

Great video. A couple of woodworking tips that might help making an unnecessary complex cordless shelter. You can easily make wooden dowels by hammering a piece of wood through a hole on a scrap of steel, even a washer will do the trick, also you can wedge a dowel from inside a hole, just place a wedge in the peg before driving it inside.

That's a perty cool shelter using no cordage. I've never done that. But like you said cordage would be faster. When I was young my tent was a sheet of visqueen and bailing twine and I was good to go. I like what you do, keep up the good work and God bless

Great video, you always have a great video. People need to remember the basics. That’s what will keep you alive to fight another day. Carrying those small augers like you’re talking about that you have made is an excellent idea. They don’t weigh nothing they don’t take up any space. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a necessity I have a little bit bigger auger that I carry with me, but there’s smaller ones like you have are the best.

Great video. Really enjoyed that one. I didn't have to use the link as you suggested, it popped up in my feed as it usually does. 😀
