I've found the most important thing to do is: stick to your plan.
Either you go for maximising your damage & minimizing what your opponent can return to you OR you prioritize objectives and target in a way to starve your opponent of victory points.
First can allow you 2-3 completely free turns of reign over the board, second can easily end up with you getting table turn 3ish but having a huge points lead and your opponents army mostly undamaged with only their fast scoring units dead and therefore unable to catch up with your lead.
    Whats the important part?
DONT MIX AND CHANGE YOUR MIND HALFWAY TROUGH A GAME.
That would lead you both tabled and your opponent with easy scoring potential...

I saw a Orks vs Blood Angels game. The Orks prioritized objectives while the Blood Angels prioritized damage. Orks went first and took most of the boarded. Forced the Blood Angels to deep strike and deploy reinforcement in their deployment zone. When the game ended, all that was left was the Orks warlord, a single model, while the Blood Angels only suffered 30% lost. But in the end the Orks won by having more victory points.
It was still a close match as each one did what you said and stuck to their plan.

I had one guy who used to show up in our store tourneys (twenty-odd years ago now) that was really taking that bonus tip to heart by using some "special" dice with sixes instead of ones on them. Mix about 8 or 10 of them into your average brick of 36 and it takes a while to notice the skew since he'd still have some ones showing and you couldn't see the difference when the dice were laying flat.
Had a fun time banning him for life when he did finally get caught. I hear he's running his own store in the next state over these days, or at least was before COVID..

For space marines (especially against other space marines), I've found Storm of Fire WT quite efficient. Since AoC is on the board, bringing a stupid amount of bolters and letting them live out full potential with this buff usually has a good chance to hit the armour cap, or just simply degrade the enemy's saves just enough to hit those infantry units.

One of my tips is to shoot based on priority and reasonable target. If my opponent has something huge that I can deal with, I'll use my important guns there first. I want to know if I can delete it or not and if I don't, I want to have my other options available as backup.
The second bit is I like to get my less important or less options out of the way. If have a bunch of bolter quality weapons, I won't save them, I'll just unload them into their immediate threat. They can't really shoot up and it helps me reduce the amount of things I need to consider to focus on how to divide my next round of shots. Hopefully that makes sense

Bonus Bonus tip though: If you have stuff that happens on nat6 to hit or wound, and you can reroll them wether they failed or not, it can sometimes be worthwhile to risk rerolling already passed rolls to fish for those sixes. Anything that has Volkite in its name is typically such a binary weapon, that's either a wet fart on anything but nat sixes in wound, but IF you get those sixes, that's a deep fried turd high pressure delivery mechanism letting your opponent drown in mortals.

Lets not forget a few other factors on die rolls:
    1) Dice size/weight
    2) Height/speed they are tossed at
    3) Die edge sharpness
    4) Amount of time spent shaking them your hand
    5) What they land on or hit before stopping
While the "Law of Averages", or whatever the real Science term is, says those factors should not matter in the long run it can increase or lower your chances that your current die roll might have more high/low numbers face up (IE: small/light dice roll for longer if thrown with the same force you would for heavier/large dice, smaller dice are also less slowed by air density). Dice boxes or a rule like found in Casinos (must bounce off the back wall) will further randomize the chances allowing for a more "Balanced" result.
Dice edge only factors while rolling as a pointed edge will stop a die sooner then a smoothed one, something that can be countered if thrown harder. Soft or Hard rolling surface will also factor how much momentum is lost during each bounce with soft surfaces taking away more. Dice weight also affect how fast it will lose momentum on each bounce, with metal die losing the most.
All the above factors are to hard for an average organic meat-bag... I mean, human to accurately control with just their hands & it's low predicable nature when adding in extra "Variables" (like emotional state, magic/spiritual curses, air quality, local gravity, Reality laws & chance of outside interference) substantially adds to its random outcome.
Note: This long joke post it to say "Don't think to hard about it & just roll the damn dice!"

I learnt to be careful of the order in which I chose units to shoot at the last tournament I attended. I had a retributor and Dominion squad with two priority targets; my opponent's Paragon warsuits and Celestian sacrasants. I had CP for both Blessed bolts and Holy trinity (I run Multi melta/heavy flamer retributors). Wanting to ensure the paragons, which were worth bring it down VP, died, I Started with the Dominions but only killed 1 between 2+ Svs and - 1 Damage. The Retributors, with holy trinity active, dealt enough damage to have killed all 3. the sacrasants tagged and killed both my units in the following turn. Had I shot with Retributors first, I would have killed the paragons (or at least severely weakened them) and allowed the Dominions to either split fire between the paragons and Sacrasants or just target the sacrasants, hopefully bypassing their invl Sv with Blessed bolts and at the very least, weakening them.
    Definitely a lesson learnt.

    • @evader110
      @evader110 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There is one huge reason not to do that in many cases. If you get one free reroll (salamanders or leviathan tyranids) or you need a shot to get through (a melta shot or something) then you want to just fire the important weapon first. Then you know if you need to reroll or not. If you end up not needing to you can use a reroll on the smaller weapon and potentially get more damage.
Against Marks of Tzeentch definitely shoot the jank first to pop the bubble for the rest of your army

Here's how to roll more 6s.
This is not superstition, this is engineering.
Fair dice do not exist. Every dice is a weighted dice to some degree whether unintentionally by manufacturing/design error or intentional cheating.
Casino dice come closest to fair dice, but they're still biased, expensive as hell and likely to pick up a bias through use.
In an ideal case, you would repeatedly roll the dice, track each individual dice and count how often a particular result comes up.
    But this is not feasible.
So some heuristics might work well. For example, if a dice rolls low, it it more likely to roll low again. I have a small discard pile for dice that roll 1s twice in a row, a dice biased to 1s is more likely to roll consecutive 1s than a dice biased towards other values, by definition.
Sure it's not going to be much greater than 1/6 in time, but I got hundreds of d6s and a few losses to improve my dice pool is acceptable.
I play Astra Militarum by the way, so that explains why I think owning hundreds of dice is a good idea and losses are acceptable.

    • @datasdukatcoat6429
      @datasdukatcoat6429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This was a brilliant post - a very well-rendered way of sharing a practice that plenty of intelligent and analytical people have adopted.
Onto some dubiousness ... I have "discarded" a particular manner of throwing the dice. Restricted to three or fewer dice, this certain, "bob", at the shoulder was noted to to yield an inordinate amount of ones. So it's not even like I ever consciously stopped doing it - it's more like an insurmountable antipathy operating on an instinctual level prevents me from performing it, _unless_ it's something like a morale test where I have to intervene consciously and avoid doing it to be fair.

    • @auspextactics
      @auspextactics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nice breakdown, might make a short vid discussing this if I get chance. A lot of people seem to do this out of superstition, but kind of interesting that it's at least theoretically a way of manipulating averages of dice rolls. I think I might split people a bit as to whether or not that's a good thing though!

There are obvious things - command points, stratagems and re-rolls from auras, sure. BUT, the kind of it all is target priority.
As already stated in the video - it is often best to start with units that have the most limited target choices:
    - limited line of sight? Might just as well fire up first, before enemy removes casualties in such a way you won't be able to any longer.
    - only able to fire at super buffed targets - no other way, so may just as well
    - sub-optimal target - if nothing better is in your crosshair, why not?
Then comes choosing the right weapons for the job and right target:
    - before using your small guys, consider if barrage weapon won't be able to do more damage first - reap the benefits of it - there is no point in firing smaller arms at the enemy squad if you can get full benefit of barrage first. This may make the difference between wiping out the squad and leaving some behind - just mind enemy casualty removal.
    - don't overkill if you can help it - don't fire your D2 weapon on on 1W models if you have option of firing it against something with 2W. Finish off wounded targets with some dinky weapon before bringing up the bigger guns.
    - Don't underkill - this is a lesser issue - I'd argue that it is better to underkill than overkill - especially against squads, or if enemy can't bring the vehicle/monster to full capacity when bracketed... Which brings me to my next point.
    - Don't be afraid to split-fire - it is often tempting to hose the enemy with all the guns on your Leman Russ... But consider that bringing down the number of guns firing back at you is oftentimes better than reducing the number of squads. Consider the scenario when you have 2 enemy squads. You can either wipe out one completely with decent reliability, or heavily wound 2 squads. Assuming these are both squads of 10. Killing off total of 12-14 models split between two squads is overall better than wiping out full squad... unless they have special weapons that can do a number on you and must be eliminated no matter what. This also has psychological effect - some players may under estimate the capabilities of weakened squads, which may force them to change plans.
    - be wary of "distraction carnifex" - I've seen it many times - that big scary knight, or demon primarch or Avatar or well... a carnifex... Army focuses all fire on it, with one final lasgun shot luckily taking the last wound of the enemy super tough unit. Hurrray... Next turn remaining of enemy army marches unopposed to objectives, kills exposed units etc. - all because the enemy got distracted by big scary thing.
    - speaking of heavily defended unit - avoid firing at unit that your foe buffed like crazy if you can avoid it - they want you to waste your shots on it... Unless this one unit is of absolutely critical priority, pick another target. And if you must fire at something with ridiculous saves - high saves are oftentimes best dealt with by multishot weapons - if enemy is covered by tons of saves... drown them with fire - single shot weapons are not exactly optimal here.

Would love for one to clear this up.
If the enemy 10 man strong unit is behind industrial cover and only 3 are visable to me i can only kill these 3 no matter if i shoot 40 rounds with Gauss Flayers on them? And do the Warriors in question all have to have line of sight too? Meaning if only 5 of my Warriors poke out of cover they can shoot the 10 rounds onto 3 enemies?

As far as I understand, if only 3 models are visible, you can kill more than that as long as it is one volley. When it comes to who can shoot, a model can shoot if it has los, so you can poke half a unit out from behind cover to fire, but only those models can fire.

@@AFKay42 Alright thanks! But with melee its different right? If 1 models gets within range of mine they can all surround me due to the "Pile in" rule or whatever its called.

@@Dewoy1 Yeah, in melee if one model gets in range then all the other models get a 3 inch move to get closer
