Matt Damon and Minnie Driver were dating when they filmed this. Her performance earned her an Oscar nomination. Damon & Affleck won the Oscar for the screenplay and Williams for Best Supporting Actor.
Not only that, but you can also clearly see the camera that's on Matt's face shake during that shot, that's because the cameraman had a hard time keeping it together as well.
I've spent the last hour trying to figure out a movie to watch, nothing sounded good, so I go on youtube and here you are, perfect timing, so excited to see your reaction to this. Robin Williams will always have a special place in my heart
Good to see you back! I like your very relaxed style. I think that Stellan always give a very credible performance! Nice comment that it must be insane to watch Robin Williams deliver lines you've written. The script IS amazing!
Nice to see you back. I enjoyed your insightful reaction to this, one of my favorites and my favorite Robin Williams performance. Another of my favorite films is Everything Is Illuminated with Elijah Wood. I believe you would really like it. Cheers from New England!
My favourite bit in the film is the ad-lib story of the gassy wife, and the natural laughter that erupted therefrom. Robin Williams was a genius, and is sorely missed...
They're simultaneously addressing so many different personality types, socio-economic distinctions, psychological features, and yet because of the writing it all feels very genuine.
For me, Good Will Huntings themes of power, intelligence, unfailing friendship, love, strength, pain and risk make it a great film. I break down in tears right along with Matt Damon each time I watch the scene where Robin Williams keeps telling him that it’s not his fault. The wounded must silently endure their agony until someone can convince them that there’s a reason to trust.
“He’s going to choke him every week”. Lol. I just want to say I’m binging your work. You are great and I can’t believe you are doing this along with film school! Appreciate your hard work!
I thoroughly enjoy this film. The script is “layered” as you said and was well executed by the actors. The theme of taking action and making decisions for yourself instead of being complacent. Making the choices you want to make and not what you believe others expect of you. The importance of taking chances and not being paralyzed by fear of regret. Life is meant to be experienced and how those experiences can teach us more than what we could read in books. Loved it. Great reaction as always. 👍🏽♥️
Ryan, I've really liked your inciteful reactions. You invited our active participation, so I'll tell you a little story about the movie, one that isn't obvious...a story that illustrates that Damon and Aflack are willing to insert elements that probably won't be spotted. At the beginning when they're auditioning therapists, Will is lying on the couch with his eyes closed, pretending to be hypnotized. Suddenly he starts singing "skyrockets in flight, afternoon delight." He opens his eyes and says "I don't need therapy!" At the end, as he's driving toward California, the credits are rolling and music is playing. The very last song was written and performed in 1976 by a group called The Starland Vocal Band. The song ends "Skyrockets in flight, afternoon delight, Ohhhhhhh afternoon delight!"
Look who's back. !!!!!! I'm so so happy to see you again. How have you been.? And how are the kids.? Big Robin Williams fan here. I love his performance in this movie but my fave RW performance is in Dead Poets Society. And I also like What Dreams May Come. Take care of yourself and that family of yours. Don't stay away too long ok.?
Even though Gus Van Sant was nominated for Best Director in the Oscar category for this, I feel it is his most "family-friendly" effort. You're right in that the movie thrives on the script and performances. My favorite Van Sant films (which I think allow him to leave his thumbprint) are "My Own Private Idaho", "To Die For", "Last Days", "Elephant", and "Milk". (If you have time please check them out). Fantastic reaction! You are very insightful, and I wish you well in your filmmaking career.
Really nice observations on some of the camerawork. Good to see you back reacting to films. Good Will Hunting came out when I was 22, I believe, and it impressed me from the get-go. I always wish Minnie Driver would’ve better fulfilled the promise she showed in the 90s.
Another great reaction. I’m sure that it’s been mentioned, but they won the Oscar for their screenplay. Some other factoids...Minnie & Matt had a genuine chemistry that lasted for a while after the film came out, but ended acrimoniously. Also, Ben’s little brother is actually his little brother, Casey Affleck 😉 Also, the song won the Oscar. A great composer who died too young. The entire soundtrack is one of my favorites 🖤🌹🖤🧛🏻♀️
Great film! With your interest in cinematography and lighting take a look at Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman in one of his last roles. Just a beautiful film..so well acted! You won’t regret it!
This movie got me into him. I was in the Air Force at the time I went to the film. I bought the CD of the soundtrack because I liked it so much, just as a generic thing. I was listening to it a LOT before I realized that there were several songs on there that I absolutely loved, and they sounded like the same person. I finally checked the track listing and discovered they were all by Elliott Smith. Became an absolute fan after that. Saw him 4 times in San Francisco before he died.
Great to see you doing movies again! Another great Damon/Affleck movie is Dogma, Kevin Smith directing. Please add to your watch list!! Still looking forward to your react to The Color Purple.
Great movie. You should see more Robin Williams movies like Awakning, Patch Adams, , Dead Poet Society, Bicentennial Man , Cadlic Man,The World According to Garp.
@@angelagraves865 Have you seen The Room? If you haven’t, don’t. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, it’s THAT bad. THE worst movie I’ve ever seen. I only ask for context as it makes Patch Adams look like a Spielberg film. If that’s one of the worst films you’ve seen, watch more films.
@@alyssaramirez7014 I've heard The Room is a cult classic for being so bad. No, I haven't seen it. I'll sometimes watch a movie known to be bad, but Patch Adams was recommended to me as being a great movie that I just had to see. Perhaps you should see more movies if you thought it was good.
This is such a great film, top to bottom, incredible script, amazing cast with wonderful performances by all; but it must be said despite not appearing for the first half of the film Robbin Williams gives an absolute legendary performance. Another Gus Van Sant film you should react to is Finding Forrester, which was his follow up to Good Will Hunting and co-stars Sir Sean Connery in his second to last film. Connery gives an excellent performance, as does the rest of the cast.
At the time there were rumors that Kevin Smith and William Goldman did uncredited rewrites of the script. Both of them have denied that. Years later Goldman said that he indeed was involved, but all he did was suggest that a certain subplot needed to be removed.
The guy in jail that said hi to Matt Damon when he was on the phone was movie Director Harmony Korine. His first movie Kids is pretty serious indie breakthrough and he continued having a thoroughly weird career.
You can see the camera shaking during the sequence at 15:27 where Robin Williams tells the farting story. This is because the operator was chuckling at Robin's improvised story.
Gus Van Sant also directed the 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, I think it’s a smart, true to the script effort to pay homage and bring new eyes to the original B/W classic. I would also suggest watching “78/52” a documentary about how filming Psycho was groundbreaking and rightfully iconic… 78 setups and 52 cuts 🔪🛁 ☠️
Great film. Glad you enjoyed it. I’d like to recommend “Requiem for a dream”. A somewhat early Darren Aronofsky film. Tough to watch at times, but worth it.
If I had to pick something to gripe about: Skylar's character was a little too perfect for Will. She's smart, fun, rich, gets along with his friends, tells dirty jokes, doesn't get mad when he doesn't call, doesn't get mad when she figures out he'd been lying to her, after he tells her he doesn't love her, she gives him another chance and repeasts that she loves him, after being again she'd still hoping he'll turn up at the airport. She'd kind of a doormat. As a viewer I think she could do better.
I looked this clip up from your recommendation, it was hilarious thank you. Watched the whole special after as well. His comments on this film were so spot on. In regards to the Patreon, it is fully up and running already so thanks if you go check it out !
Watching you next to Minnie Driver made me realize how similar you look. The masculine and the feminine... I wouldn't be surprised if you have family in common. 🤔

I’ve got a movie suggestion for you if you haven’t seen it it’s a bit of a long title I’m not exactly sure the entire thing but it’s called seeking a friend for the end of the World something like that it’s got Keira Knightley in it Another Tom Hanks movie when I really like it’s one of my personal favourites from him terminal that is not necessarily something wherever I could say that every filmmaker would need to see it or anything like that because it was a good Tom Hanks for Amazo another Tom Hanks movie when I really like it’s one of my personal favourites from him terminal that is not necessarily something wherever I could say that every filmmaker would need to see it or anything like that it is a good Tom Hanks Film that’s all
I found this very schmaltzy and to be frank, just a rom com disguised as someting else. I found the script to be naive in parts. What does the Sistine Chapel smell of? From my memory it just smelt of tourists.I hated that line.
your calmness , care-free look, and the reassuring tone when you speak , is beyond my understanding
"He's gonna choke him once a week."
😂😂😂
That cracked me up
I died laughing 😆
Matt Damon and Minnie Driver were dating when they filmed this. Her performance earned her an Oscar nomination. Damon & Affleck won the Oscar for the screenplay and Williams for Best Supporting Actor.
Also touch of trivia, Robin Williams' story about his wife farting wasn't scripted, that's why Damon's laugh seems so genuine, cause it is :)
Not only that, but you can also clearly see the camera that's on Matt's face shake during that shot, that's because the cameraman had a hard time keeping it together as well.

And the shaky closeup shot of Will bc the cameraman was laughing so hard.
I could tell it was real by how much Matt Damon was wheezing because he smoked at the time.
They're simultaneously addressing so many different personality types, socio-economic distinctions, psychological features, and yet because of the writing it all feels very genuine.

Glad to see ya back!
And the script originally had a NSA/governor conspiracy angle that Gus VanZant convinced them to drop.
“He’s going to choke him every week”. Lol. I just want to say I’m binging your work. You are great and I can’t believe you are doing this along with film school! Appreciate your hard work!

I loathed Van Sant’s remake of Psycho. It demonstrated such a fundamental misunderstanding of the original’s insight as to beggar belief.
I'm not buying that Matt and Ben wrote this. They're Milli Vanilli. If they are capable such writing then why have they not written more great works?
