    I clicked on this just as soon as I saw it in my notifications. I'm really looking forward to getting my "first" reptile. I had snakes, skinks, lizards, and frogs when I was a kid but I KNOW I didn't do their setups right and probably not their care either. That's what happened back in the day when you only had the pet shop worker's word to go on about what they need. The internet changed everything. I'm really looking forward to starting fresh with the knowledge I need, and I loved this video!

      I didn't have it in my notifiications, but I saw it in my recommendations now and this is super helpful for me as a first time reptile owner.
      My husband had lizards when he was a child, but he never learned how to care for them and they never lived past a couple weeks, so I'm accepting no advice from him.

    I appreciate the way you inform your audience “set it up how you want as long as the parameters are right”
    Exactly, I see sooo much varying information
    “What’s the best temps are for this reptile” when really it just needs to be within a certain threshold, a gradient n what not. Anyways, good stuff!

    One thing I can also recommend to all beginners, make the enclosure is as detailed and as big as your going to want your reptile to be living in for the rest of its life. You will save so much money instead of buying things that are just going to be sitting in your closet after you find something you like better.

    Hello AWESOME ADAM!!!!!!!!!! Question, I think that all of these years I've been in error on my enclosure temperature. I am setting up 4 new enclosures for a Fla Kings, I have one side that a heat mat that is set on 85 to 88 degrees, the over-all air temp however remains at around 73 to 76 degrees, Is this ok as long as the snake has complete access to both temperature areas, or do I need to also raise the air temp on the warm side or is access to the heat pad area enough? I have all set temps on therms. Thanks so much Adam!!!!!!!!!!

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heat mats aren’t a good primary heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

    I agree to a point that we arrange an enclosure for us, however all the extras that I have added to my Leopard Gecko's enclosure as well as my other reptiles can only enrich their lives further. I wouldn't downplay the importance of this as we are literally creating our pets world for their whole life and over the course of that life changes will be made, things will be added, but the bottom line is that I'm constantly thinking about what my pet might like and always feel so happy when they use what I've given them. I hate it when I hear "Oh that will be good enough, he won't care," because in very many subtle ways I think they do. They need enrichment and things to do just as we do and that's how I set up an enclosure with that in mind. I really enjoy your vids just hope you always stress the best ways to keep a reptile not just the cheapest.

    Would you recommend getting a snake (I'm looking for a hognose), when you've never ever handled a reptile in your life? Or should I find a way to try that first? As a child I was even scared of picking up my guinea pig... but that was over 10 years ago, so hopefully that's not an issue anymore. Idk.

      My first reptile as an adult was a Rosy boa. I'm not sure I would recommend a hognose because they can be quite sassy, but if you are confident enough to handle that it should be fine.

    I have to admit I cringed when I saw that starter kit… I’ve been told and told and told that most premade kits are full of the wrong supplies, useless add-ons, and generally aren’t worth the money. I know from research that this is generally true of bearded dragon starter kits… but I’m glad that some are worth the money.

    Looking at getting my 1st snake (western hognose). When you talk about temperature on hot side, does that mean on top of substrate, or bottom? Should the heating pad take-up about half of the tank and stay plug in 24/7 with thermostat? Non UVB lighting would be fine for day/night cycle? Terrarium size 36LX24DX18H

    You do not like PetCo? I get all of my fish from them and have been for nearly 15 years. l now use them as my supply source for my feeder mice for my big corn snake, it eats 4 large mice every couple of weeks. The store I go to does not have much of a reptile selection. At the peak of my reptile hobby and lecture circuit, I had 17 snakes and four lizards, all but my corn snake, banana king snake, Amazonian Tree Boa, rosy boa (Lichanura trivirgata or Charina trivergat), and my my big plated lizard, a rescue who I called Digger, were indigenous to my area.
    I enjoyed giving reptile presentations to the folks round where I lived, mostly to show that the reptiles were nothing to fear, if they had one they did not want in their yard, I would remove them, for free. I removed everything from garter snakes to Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes and relocated them way from populated areas. My outlet for reptiles and supplies went out of business even with me spending nearly $750-$800 a month there, it took nearly two dozen adult mice and about a dozen pinkie mice to feed my snakes. As well as the 200 crickets, and two dozen large meal worms for the lizards..
    When I quit giving lectures, I returned all of my native reptiles to the wild, except Fatso and one female, as well as my two native boa constrictor, rubber boa (Charina bottae), they were a breeding pair giving me up to six neonates each breeding season. These I would release back into the wild after keeping them a few months to be sure they were healthy, sort of fat and taking food well. My female big boa, would hide under the collar of my blouse while I gave my lecture, she always seemed to time it just right to show herself, she was the gentlest of my snakes. One big issue was trying to dispel a a longing running myth about the big Pacific gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer catenifer), being a cross with the rattlesnake and therefor venomous. Had a big male, called Fatso, that I would allow select guest to handle, he was really laid back. They all tame out nicely after handling for a few minutes after wild capture. Fatso was a rescue, taken from the second floor corridor, in one of the local hotels. All of my exotics died from old age Digger was about 5 y/o when rescued and he lived at my house for another 20 years before he quietly passed away one night, he alone accounted for over half the crickets and meal worms every two weeks.
    I just love the reptiles of the Pacific Northwest, more fun to raise then the exotics. I would love to see more on the indigenous reptiles.
