I met Kirk when I was a teenager in 1999 as a stage hand sitting on a box eating a sandwich and watching him just walk around the outdoor stage (workers are not allowed to talk to the talent). He was playing a ESP decked out with "The Mummy" movie painting wireless just doing classical scales alone with the full force of an amphitheater sound system.
He approached me and asked "do you play?"... I said "yeah I play." He then handed me a guitar pick and asked "what do you think about these?" It was the guitar picks being handed out as a promo of the current tour they where headlining with their logo on one side and a cartoon depiction of the band on the other side. I said "honestly? it's a lot thicker and stiffer then anything I would use." he replied "yeah! exactly... no one would actually use these, I don't think I like that."
Then I asked him about the wireless system because I had never seen that before and Kirk happily began explaining it to me in detail to the point that I got nervous about getting fired because I was having a conversation I wasn't supposed to be having lol.
I always just thought it was so amazing that a rock star at the height of his career was so willing to have a casual conversation with a young peon like me.

Another reason that I miss 1999. I was 18 and going to concerts back to back. I almost made it back stage at Woodstock 99. Good times. Immortal times. I took no pictures of the times but when I watch videos, I can spot myself in a mosh pit. It was a huge area for the festival so thank god for check points where I know I’d be at.

I wish I could shake your hand!! You are a legend in your right! I'm going to make this short because I typed out a lot prior to this comment I'm posting right now. The page had refreshed and I lost everything that I had. What would make you a legend though is he wholeheartedly agreed with your opinion/advice, and as a musician. He Wasn't looking at them from an aesthetic view. He wanted people to be able to use those guitar picks not just have them for show. Anyways in 2013, I go to a Metallica concert and picked up a few guitar picks that had been thrown to the crowd . I still have those guitar picks to this very day and if I pick up a guitar I use them. Which means, if he went about using actual guitar picks, instead of aesthetic merchandise, then he did that because of your point of view, and his matching thoughts on it as well. which would in turn be the the reason why I have actual Metallica Guitar Picks, and I've kept them for so long. So, If I'm not mistaken then YOU'RE the reason why anybody would have a real guitar pick from them. ALSO bro, If that isn't one of the most METAL stories I've ever heard then idk what would be. Thank You,and I appreciate you for sharing this with us common folk! 😁🙏 #Neverforget #NoLifeTilLeather #MetalUpYourAss 🙏🙏🤜🤛👏🙏❤️🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I absolutely love how Kirk expresses himself and you can just feel the emotion and passion he has for music and life in general! This whole interview was a gem. I hate that Metallica had to disable the comments under this interview because I saw some people saying Kirk was on drugs and making all these rude comments/jokes about the way he talks. If you're a real fan you know that Kirk is an introverted guy and talking isn't his strong suit. He's said in the past that he has lots of anxiety and it shows in many interviews. On stage with his brothers is where he feels the most comfortable. It's sad so many keyboard warriors love to make dumb comments about Kirk who's arguably the sweetest person in the metal scene. Keep going Kirk, the real Metallica fans got your back!

    • @wcnmvp3820

@@Gguy061 you also have to look at it from the right angle. He was there, in a blooming scene where hardcore was evolving into thrash with influence from the British and Danish metal bands, he helped pioneer a certain style of metal and simply was at the right places at the right times. There are still acts that are relatively new who have reached superstardom, much like Metallica, but just don't play metal. Equally, I think he's talking about thrash/metal in general, as while a lot of his fellow Bay Area bands were fairly large in their own right during the 80s (Exodus, Dark Angel, Possessed), they didn't reach the same heights. You can be very successful in music but you have to play your cards right and that's why I think he said there's "no guarantee" instead of "0% chance". Apologies for the wall of text

He's absolutely right. The industry is sick and pathological in many ways, not just the mainstream sickness at the top of the charts and the awards, etc. Apart from that, if you're interested in music and you want to make a career out of it, good luck. Make sure you have something solid to not just to fall back on but to support you through the process, and remember what Lemmy said: you have to be in the right place at the right time. This is essential as with anything, including the expression of genius in science, etc. You can try and strategically position yourself, and some will have more success than others doing that, but there are some deep aspects that you just can't substitute or account for, such as cultural roots and extensive immersion. When you look at Kirk's history, it's a great example of this, such as being taught by Joe Satriani.

His comments about playing music as a calling reminded me of Keith Richards being asked about retiring. Basically, he said, “To do what? I’ve never wanted to do anything else and at this point I can’t do anything else.” Like Keef, it looks like the all-or-nothing gamble paid off!👍🏾👍🏾

4:08 July 1988. I'm on the elevator in our hotel, same one Van Halen is staying at. I see this guy in the pic and do a double take. He does too. We both smile at how weird this is. I ask him if he's here for the Monster's Of Rock show tomorrow? He says, with a bit of a smirk,
    "Yeah, you too?".
"Yup. Drove 8 hours here in the Scamp From Hell" (which I'd painted the entire interior and rims like EVH's Kramer. Zeke Clark told me the entire band had gone down to the parkade for pix. I told him how bad our seats were. He invited me up to his room and the 5150 and 1984 guitars were on the bed. He took the 5150 and I took the 1984 and we played a few rounds of name that tune).
My floor comes, the doors open.
I say to this guy: "Enjoy the show."
"You too, cheers.", he says with a smile.
Next day I'm front row, dressed in VH red with white strips from neck to toe and there's THAT guy on stage!
He pointed at me and smiled and I just shook my head and laughed.
I was a fan of his band by the end of the show and saw them on the Justice tour 10 months later.
Weird that we don't' look anything alike now. Of course I haven't lived like Kirk has.

Kirk made it because he’s a good guy. He just kept his focus and broke through. He was at the forefront of a new movement. And his passion kept him going against the current. Now he’s worth 300 million dollars and he’s still just a cool and grounded dude. He knows what it’s like to not have money. And although I’m sure the money is nice, Kirk would’ve been a thrasher regardless. He just happened to be in the most pivotal thrash band of all time with 3 other dudes that were equally passionate about their music. Good for Kirk. He deserves his fame and fortune. And I’m sure he has been the voice of reason in Metallica many times.

It was spring of ‘88… maybe late winter? We talked about so much interesting shit. Such a sweet dude. They were gearing up for monsters of rock tour. He was like! “Can you imagine US playing gigs with Van Halen?
Anyway, we were both there to watch/support Death Angel. Metallica was huge in our world (Bay Area)… but they were on the cusp of super stardom.

She turned around and giggled at him. 10 mins later, she came back and asked him if he wanted something (?) it was then I realized that was his girlfriend (wife?). He laughed so hard, and asked me..”oh shit, you think would just smack some girl in the ass who I didn’t know?… some crazy metal head might kill me in here”. Got damn, we laughed our asses off. The older I get the more I appreciate music. I've always been a logical kinda guy. Yeah, I love Metallica but I never really "got" why people would say they just couldn't live without music.
It's like... music is the closest thing we have to actual magic. It's reading, writing, and poetry all in one. It's communication on a different level, without words. It speaks emotions, even without lyrics... and that's kinda weird when you think about it.
Music doesn't really exist. You can't touch it or put it in a box. A computer doesn't handle music any different than a recording of white noise. But these patterns of vibrations in the air can make us cry, laugh, or feel thrilled.
Cultures across history have similar senses of scales and tones. What's harmonious, and what sounds dissonant. It's a universal language that no one really invented.
So yeah... music is some strange black magic. Possibly the most uniquely human thing there is.

In 2008 I stood in a very long line in Mountain View , California for 14.hours to personally meet Metallica.
By about the eleventh hour ( no pun intended), the rumour from the front of the line was that Kirk was going to leave early from the autograph session to go to Las Vegas to jam with the Rolling Stones. Sure enough , we all witnessed the black Lincoln Town car spirit him away from the gangly rope of 1500 people that wrapped around the music store like the fallen bean stalk in that one story about Jack and the Giants.
The general consensus , in the linr where I was standing at least , was a bit disturbed ,to say the least!
On the verge of a riot we had been standing and waiting for the small chance that we each might be so chosen lucky , to possibly own a sliver of time that belonged to the Gods.
I met Lars and James and Robert, and it was one of the best days of my entire life.
That all being said , I have always wished to have met Kirk because I always felt that Kirk was the Metallica member who embodied the biggest sense of pain and triumph of all the members of Metallica. James was tough Lars was mean ,Cliff Jason and Robert were raw but Kirk was leathal and vulnerable .
Can you imagine having to fill Dave's shoes as the lead guitarist of Metallica, when you were only a young kid?
I wonder how heavy that axe was?
Kirk I am glad that you survived this life thus far and I am proud of you for always wearing your heart on your sleeve in a world where such a position is often perceived in a negative skew.
For those people who chastise and critique only do so because they completely lack heart and they are perpetually devoid of the compassion and empathy that a true master of his craft readily employs with prudence , rigor ,and skill.

Bands cant depend on album royalties, or a manager that gets them radio airplay anymore. Luckily, they are dependent on a past reputation from millions of people their age that have nostalgic memories of their youth attached with their music. They need to Tour in order to make money. But they make millions, so its hard to feel too sorry for the touring slaves.
