To clear up confusion, I'm the fill in screamer in this video. They asked me to do it because jon mess was sick. "Dude we need you to scream for our show." "But i dont know any of the songs!" "Its okay theres no lyrics anyways" I believe thats how it went down. Ive been a metal vocalist my whole life so this was different thats for sure. Been in Conducting from the grave and shadow of the colossus. Y'all can stop assuming now.
Jonny Craig: "My first show was in Sacramento. We didn't really have any songs written and (Jon Mess), at the day of the show, lost his voice. We had a stand in screamer from Kentucky From The Grave if anyone knows who that is. Good friend of ours. It was just the most ridiculous thing we ever did in our entire lives. Straight up! (Laughs) It is the first video of us ever on youtube. If you find it, it is with a random guy with long hair doing pig squeals."
Its not terrible for that point in time to be honest. Keep in mind the Kings of Post Hard Core was Thrice, Saosin and Thursday. 2005 is before the wave of post hardcore bands that everyone started calling 'scene'.
I miss this so Much, Jonny had so much passion in his vocals. This is when I would've done ANYTHING to see them live. I miss the old Jonny that actually had a love for his music. Downtown battle mountain was one of the best albums ever released, I wish he would go back to that.
I'm so happy to been able to see JC with DGD 3 times. Including the 10 year anniversary tour. I legit cried when he sang And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman
Jonny's gritty voice is amazing but I think we can all agree that when he sings this clean with little rasp it sounds really good because this is basically his natural voice....like on this album and in ghost runner the third he has no rasp or a little rasp which sounds good
What is the second song? its beautiful. Also, people don't give Swan enough credit for all he's done for the band and how he's never gave up on dgd, same goes for Mingus.
I think the crowd was a decent size because 4 of these guys were in a great local pop punk band before forming dance gavin dance with jonny and mess (Will, Erick, Matt and Alvaro were members of Farewell Unknown). The guy whos doing the screams here isn't mess but I like him anything for screaming vowels pretty good. Alvaro I think only did the pre royal ocean demos before sean o came in to be part of the classic royal and DTB1 lineup (he was in one song in DTB2 and was a exclusive for hometown shows). Happy 10th anniversary to Dance Gavin Dance!
ULTRA GAMER yeah jonny is on royal ocean he sings, alvaro is the only member of dgd not to have appeared on a official release. He only appears on the royal ocean demos sean did replace him and appeared on royal ocean
I can’t believe this song was first called hot plate, and now it’s the importance of cocaine... it somehow makes sense from the first title to the next
Damn humidity...gotta zap that plate in the microwave..God bless hot plates..like a fine wine. Ppl who go the extra mile..all for the importance of cocaine 🤍
the great and mighty cheese wheel from what i understand, jon was sick and unable to perform live so this guy ( who is a friend of the bands) filled in for the night.
@dancingwithcalvin sounds a little like the original version importance of cocain but changed. and just so you know out of disapointment this isnt swans channel. he says on his channel hes just an uber fan
i hope he finds a new band or even just forms a new post-hardcore band, that would be cool, then everybody would be talking about Emarosa, Dance Gavin Dance, A Lot Like Birds and his new band which hasn't been done yet so yeah., this is great,
this is actually not matt. this guys name is drew from another band, (dont remember the name) matt couldnt make it to the performance.. and plus he wasnt really "part of the band" when he first started

Whats the song starting at 3:48 called?
If you could answer thus question it would make me year
Its called "indie song" they recorded instrumentals but never released it.
Andrew Winterz you killed it with the short notice
nice Reflux shirt btw :^)
i like how in their very first show they had to find a replacement for someone. it's like foreshadowing for the entire first half of their career.
Very insightful!
It seems like Gavin wasn't willing to dance after all.

If someone told me that roughly 10 years later everyone on this stage would be concidered a legend in the scene I wouldve slapped you
Its not terrible for that point in time to be honest. Keep in mind the Kings of Post Hard Core was Thrice, Saosin and Thursday. 2005 is before the wave of post hardcore bands that everyone started calling 'scene'.
Now there’s a whole subgenre called Swancore...

Houston Pierce Craig cleared his act up, if it means he lost a little of his step that’s ok. Health is important

0:00 Hot Plate ( The Importance of Cocaine demo)
3:50 Indie Song
So no one's gonna comment on how these guys are like 15-18?
Ten years later. Kinda always knew Jonny would still be singing, even through all the mistakes hes made, his commitment to music has been undeniable.
I dont care

iiJohanii i also thinks it sounds the best when he sings that way
iiJohanii look up secret band its Jon and the rest of the band without clean vocals
@@pylerterry966 I believe he was talking about jonny craig
It’s so raw. There’s definitely this phenomenon of good singers before they have discovered good technique having raw emotional power

The song that starts at 4:00 I listen to a lot. Beautiful
indie song 💔
THEY ARE ADORABLE
Actually, Jon Mess was sick that night so they had a fill-in screamer. It was Drew Winter from a band called Conducting From The Grave.
I love that this is on TH-cam. There are barely any bands that have their FIRST show recorded like this. So aaaaaweeeeessooommmeee!!!
i would give anything to have seen this live
we still need that last song frfr

This video was awesome!!!!!
i wish they recorded that second song
Wow they've come a long way.
sounds like a very early version of The Importance of Cocaine
Dcon it is
Indeed it is
Obviously
That's exactly what it is. It's basically pre WISIRO.
jonny was a cutie. :D and his voice sounds amazing. :3
LMAO, bro this made my day.
Wish we could go back to this.
I can’t believe this song was first called hot plate, and now it’s the importance of cocaine... it somehow makes sense from the first title to the next

I actually like the sound of them live back then c:
right at the end you can hear the riff they sampled for the weeknds song 'the birds pt 2' like that little minor arpeggio
Louis Nellis Where is that in the birds pt 2?
That is not the birds part 2 lmao. The weeknd sampled Martina Topley-Bird - Sandpaper Kisses for the guitars.
@IrvinP92 it's not jon. jon was sick that night and they got a fill in... his first name is drew but i don't know his last name
@heislegend93 well yeah..
i mean i thought so, buyt me and my bro were both like,.... hm idk..
but the voice kept me thinking it was him
I like how 90% of the people commenting on this have no idea what they're talking about.
@PepsicanOneTreeHill do you know which song
Am I the only one who thought the screamer dude sounded pretty good? If he mixed some low growls in there it would have been even better.
I wish eric would go on tours, here he puts on a fantastic show.
man... indie song. What a special piece
Looks like they're playing a pretty big crowd for their first show.... Lucky.
whos the screamer with the egoraptor hair
the great and mighty cheese wheel from what i understand, jon was sick and unable to perform live so this guy ( who is a friend of the bands) filled in for the night.

@jorskid no. they hadnt even written lyrics for any of the songs yet in this vid
@barbershop1992 you mean conducting from the grave ?

Will swan is the man for posting this
Tour Cancelled. I just died on the inside. D:
Its insane how much thryve improved...but what was up with the lyrics they didnt seem right
2nd song starts at 3:52
@parkins521 yeah, the vocalists get a lot of the attention but swan and mingus are what make this band really good.
Woahh
@muiscnight sounds like a silversun pickups cover
@gilanggilungg the song is official called the importance of cocaine
Drew Winter is so good
It doesn’t really look like it, but Matt was 16 years old in this
@spoofdigg That is John.
lol
is that the same drew winter that is in shadow of the colossus?
Yep
Indie song sounds like a covet song with vocals added.
who is that screamer thats not john mess?
@parkins521 Will swan, and Matthew Mingus are possibly the most influential factors to this despairing music scene, alone.
@dancingwithcalvin sounds a little like the original version importance of cocain but changed. and just so you know out of disapointment this isnt swans channel. he says on his channel hes just an uber fan
WOOOWWWWW
@smashingpoop i heard he;s gonna release a rap cd. didnt mean to thumbs down this btw :p
It is Jonny Craig
@VeryHumorFilms As if anyone would want to skip The Importance of Cocaine. The second song is beautiful as well, though.
That wasn't Mess screaming, was it?

@987654321789456123 thats the 1st song.............
thumps if you wish you were there :]
Matt was only 16 when they did this holy fucking shit
Ian Aberbach It blows my mind everyday.
Matt Rosen skrillex was also 16 when he sang for fftl
this is actually not matt. this guys name is drew from another band, (dont remember the name) matt couldnt make it to the performance.. and plus he wasnt really "part of the band" when he first started
So even in the very beginning, Jonny was forgetting the words. Nice
I don't think there was any words to begin with lol
God dammit Johnny. Why did you have to be you? Your skill set people would kill for and you fucking blew it 😪
The screaming guy was Jon???? Someone?
Uh yeah
Karolyn Matías Drew Winters from Sacramento deathcore band Shadow of the Colossus
Uh no
jiggins007 Thanks dude.
Karolyn Matías for sure man
@muiscnight ummm they did... its called "the importance of cocaine"
