    Story time: so about a year ago i lend a book to this guy who really loves reading, and he's a nice guy so i knew he'd be careful with my book (i'm really anxious about letting people borrow my books fyi) and so he read it, and then one of his friends asked him if she could borrow it and he told her to ask me, so she did, and I couldn't just be like "no, he can borrow it but you can't" so I let her borrow it, and when I got it back I almost cried. Firstly, she had folded the corners of it and apparently she could only read one page at a time 'cos all pages were folded.... -.-'' Second; she had spilled some kind of soda or something in my book so all the pages were crumbled and shit like that!!
    Moral of the story: i won't ever let anyone borrow a book of mine again.

      Same here. I have a friend who will borrow my books and forget she hasn't return them. She'll say she did, but then I'll find it in her room. One time her dog had torn the side a little, i was so upset. I finally put my foot down, and I haven't let anyone borrow my books unless they are anal about book reading too. That is probably one or two people. Even then, I have NEVER EVER lent out my signed/pre-released copies. A friend of mine will want to borrow one that i just got a few days ago, but I am so scared she'll ruin it. I want her to read it, but I don't want her to read mine, but if I say that she can't, she'll say that I said a few days ago if I did get it, she could (making me a hypocrite). I hope she pre-ordered it, so I don't have to worry about this anymore!! All these book feels are making me rant and rave! (and you are not my therapist!)

      Alicia Medina haha, I totally understand you! I get carried away when I talk about books and stuff I really like as well :) But it's really sad that people can't take proper care of the stuff you lend them, 'cos personally I love letting people read the same books I've read and loved, but it's just so discouraging when people ruin the books you lend them :/...

      JulianneIsNotThatBoring Exactly! We need to remind these fools that our books are also our PROPERTY. You don't borrow a car for a bit and crash it or something, do you? If you know you're a bad driver, don't borrow a car. Why would you do it if you know you're gonna crash it! Then you gotta pay for it! :( Books are life! So why not treat them with the utmost care?!

      I borrowed a book from a friend one day, and it took me so long to read it (it wasn't a problem for her though), I carried it in my school bag, and one day I realized it was damaged, I felt so bad I had to rebuy her the book, even though she didn't care I really felt bad, because I don't mind if my books are damaged, and even if she didn't care either I couldn't just gave her the book back like that! And I had another friend, but that girl is really picky with books, I borrowed her Romeo and Juliet, but I felt terrible everytime I opened the book because I didn't want to damage it haha. I never borrowed another book from that friend because I was so nervous x)
      I think it's weird to borrow something from someone you don't even know, and then give the thing back like it's not a problem if it's completely spoiled! It's absurd really...

  • @jacquelineg.168
    @jacquelineg.168 10 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Oh gosh! If I ever borrowed a book from a friend, I don't think I'd ever lend it out to someone else. It boggle my mind that people think it's okay to do this. It's not even their property to make decisions about.

    I wanted my friend to read The Night Circus so I could talk about it with her, so I let her borrow it, and each day I saw her afterwards she hadn't even started it. By two weeks I had to make an excuse to get it back because I missed the book so much and needed it back so I knew it was safe...that was the first and last time I lent a book out.

    Whenever I borrow books from someone I give myself a month deadline (like a library book). If I haven't read it in that month then I return the book. I only read borrowed books in my house so as not to damage them. I understand the fear of lending out your books and them being damaged so I'm really particular about how I treat borrowed books.

    This was a lot of fun to watch, nicely done!
    I fully cop to being a bit of a snob when it comes to lending out my books. After walking into a friend's office only to see them forcefully crease my copy of "V for Vendetta" so it would lie flat on a desk, there's really only two or three people I'll lend books to and they've all been vetted.
    Mostly I just tell people "I'm at a place in my life where my books are like my children!" They tend to stop asking after that. Or just leave me alone altogether.

    So I was actually about to buy her book a few minutes ago, but because I was trying to buy only books $3.50 and under (this website is AMAZING) I put it in my wishlist for later. She seems so sweet I might just have to go buy it now. It makes it special when you actually see the author and you see personality.

    Thank goodness I'm not alone in completely forgetting major facts while waiting for the next book in a series to be released! Although when the author in question (in my case) makes us wait many years between books, I think it's inevitable you're going to forget something. This video also made me remember how lucky I am to work in a secondary school library: all of the new books you can eat FOR FREE!

    I lend my books only to my Mom (we live in the same house) or to my best friend, simply because everyone else abused their book borrowing privileges. My sister borrowed several of my books, one she really liked and then tried to pretend was hers, and the other book was one I'd actually bought new, which is pretty rare for me to do, I usually buy used books, but this one I bought brand shiny new along with the second one in the series and she poured coffee on it and it was a paperback. Yeah, it's not pretty anymore.

    I'm very much a mood reader too. I go through my books and chose whatever looks fun and interesting at that particular moment.
    When I dislike a book I put it aside and leave it for another moment of my life.
    I don't really keep a number of books to read. I hate to feel more pressure than I actually need to in my life.
    Not liking a book is not a crime. I usually tend to like stuff that nobody is talking. Like the old vampire chronicles by Anne Rice. Who reads them still these days? I find hardly anyone.
    I rarely cried over a book.
    I don't mind burrowing books but not all. Some that hold particular sentimental value won't leave my selves.

    Remember finishing The Summer Garden one morning (final of the Bronze Horseman trilogy) for the first time last yr in my dorm room and seeing my roommate slowly edge out of the room as if I were some poisonous snake! I shelf my TBR books in the order I intend to read them. That way, the next book is ready to go. Once it is read, if it is a keeper it is shelved in its permanent spot by genre and author.

    Yeah now I only lend books to people I currently live with, that way I can take them back. I once lent out a book that I loved to a good friend of mine. A year passed, but she swore she gave it back, but I know for a fact she hadn't because I was dying to read it again and waiting for it to be returned so I could read it again. I had to repurchase it. Currently my room mate is reading it, but I keep tabs on her progress, and the safety of my book -_- not going through that AGAIN!

    I lent a few books to my sister last year and she still hasn't gave them back, but I know she still has them. A couple of those books were signed copies, too. I trust my sister with my books because I know she won't ruin them. Though she did lose my copy of 'My Name is Memory' by Ann Brashaires when she let her boyfriend's mom read it. But I've forgiven her since because she returned a pile of books she borrowed after that. Just this last pile of books she has yet to return, but I won't lend her any other books until she returns those so I know I'll get them back because she likes borrowing from my bookshelves.

    My best friend has borrowed my books before and I knew she would not "hurt" it. I lent her divergent in September and she didn't give it back till last week. And she didn't even finish it and I was always asking like "SOO how are you liking divergent" and she's like "I haven't been reading it really. Why do you need it back?" Like excuse me but I collect books and would like my own book that I bought in my own possession thank you! 😭

  • @CagedxBirdx

    I have 3 best friends, and I only let one out of the three borrow my books. She always returns them just the way I gave them to her, no problem. And even if it's been months, I know it's safe and I'll get it back one day, she won't lose it or damage it.
    One of the other three had my favorite book of all time, and spilled nail polish on its cover and then lost it while moving, never to be seen again. And the other one lost a copy of my other favorite book...
    Moral of the story: Even best friends can lose your books, don't lend out your favorite copies of ANYTHING.

  • @oath491

    True story currently happening: My friend and I have been fighting over if a certain book series is repetitive or not. She believes it isn't while I say it is (even though I have only read most of them, but I've read like 7 or 8, that is pretty far for someone who dislikes it). Since it is not all too popular we have no one else to ask about it. Sometimes we will somehow get back on the topic of it, and we will argue about it until we agree to save it for later since we have work to do. It's a vicious cycle that won't end.

She saw no problem in returning it to me after it got water damaged. The whole last chapter was basically unreadable and the cover would not close the book properly anymore! I nearly cried right there and she went off like nothing happened. The whole rest of my family was like "Oh my god, are you ok?"

      Well, speak up for yourself. If you don't tell your cousin to buy a new copy you won't get one.

      To be fair they both offered to buy me new copies of the book but I said it was fine because this was before I was over protective of my books

    I lost the first book in the If I Were You serie. My parents are divorced so I thought maybe I left it at my other home. It wasn't... *insert horror tune* then I remembered I lend it to someone. Unfortunately I can't remember who borrowed it. My collection of the serie feels so empty. Allthough it isn't my favourite serie of all time...

    lol I let someone borrow my copy of Divergent too and never got it back. I also let someone borrow my copy of The Maze Runner a couple years ago and just got it back. It's rough I feel this so much.

    I lent Insurgent AND Allegiant to one of my friends this summer and she just started Insurgent, so I won't have them back anytime soon. I'm dying to know if they're still in good state, but right now I'm almost certain they're at least a bit damaged.... Nooooo :(

    I have the covers problem with Harry Potter because I have the Deathly Hallows adult cover but I have different covers for the rest (excluding my hardback of Prisoner of Askaban). I also don't have a copy of Order of the Phoenix. :( I am definitely buying the full adult cover collection. :)

      If someone asks to borrow a book if I have it, I'll say I don't have it even if I do. Otherwise I don't let people borrow them. It tends to be more about destroying the book than taking ages to get it back to me.

      Yes! I could not trudge through the writing style! I also read it for school, but the task was just to read a Classic, so I ended up switching my book at the last possible moment. I have met more of my kind!

    • @abbyzinger
      @abbyzinger 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeskyaa Lee Aileen Zhang I also read it for school. I didn't like the writing style but I disliked Jane as a character more. I mean, it's been a while, but I remember her being this totally empty character - there was nothing going on with her. She just got dragged around by life. So boring and so infuriating to read.

    • @BeautifullyReckles
      @BeautifullyReckles 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hated it as well. I didn't like the writing style or Jane as a character and I especially hated my English teacher at the time, which didn't help. I did however love the webseries adaptation called the Adventures of Jane Eyre.

    I think I'm some unemotional weirdo because everyone seems to have cried at the book thief or say it's one of their favourite books but I neither cried OR think it's one of my favourites :O I thought it was kind of upsetting but...I think parts of it were so sudden that it took me a while to register what just happened. I have read other books that have made me cry like a baby...but the book thief just wasn't one of them :/
