People like yourselves give us the desire to try something like this, even if there is no boat on the horizon - for now. I would love to do this sort of trip before everything becomes impossible to be done, either due to travel restrictions, cash restrictions, or any other restriction. I have watched so many videos on the Canal des Deux Mer and the Canal du Midi that the locks hold no secrets for me. 😊
I totally agree with your characterization of the French. I'm an American and have had wonderful experiences with the French over several years of travel to France, both large cities and small towns. As to the "experience" required to hire a canal boat, I rented one a few years ago and couldn't even get an answer from the representative as to what direction the prop turned. Spring lines...what's that? He was used to explaining the stove ,head and heater operation...not piloting the boat questions. We just powered out of the slip and put her into reverse to confirm my supposition that the prop turn counterclockwise. Problem solved! Thanks for you videos.

Wanted to hire a boat in France but my wife fancied going to Italy so we got a Le Boat and did the Venice Lagoon last year, recommend it, although, having been sailing since the sixties and coaching from ribs for 30 years I found the boat a bit of a pig to handle. At times I was trying to reverse into berths with current, wind and wash from ferries. Our first mooring on the trip another experienced boater came running over to help and said these thing aren't easy. I recommend to anyone wanting to do this to ensure they get a boat with bow thruster. Having said that I'd happily go again on the same boat if I didn't have a choice and after a week on the boat feel somewhat more confident.

My mother in-law probably thinks I'm shifty because I tend to look at the screen rather than the camera when on Skype. Not that I am actually shifty - honestly. I think Nick could just about cut it as a TV presenter, when compared to some of the people from the early part of the bell curve that infest our commercial TV.

Thank you for posting this. I have learned a lot from you both. We are closer to our far distant future than you folks, and although we too have a lift keel, the cost of a 25,000 mile RTW sail means it will be cheaper to buy a boat there in France. Based on watching your videos and your experience we are planning to do just that. I guess that hire boat people are the same the world over. Our experience in the Whitsundays was similar with cats anchoring directly over our gear 40 feet ahead and some just 10 feet away in Cid Harbour. Rafting up 3 boats to 1 anchor over coral reefs etc. Anyway, we are looking forward to your new boat adventure. Fair winds.

Great points covered. Here in Switzerland, we greet people everywhere. Even two year old kids start to learn to greet. Politeness is key here. We find expats coming here, complain our country is boring, we are unfriendly. Then why are our shops not open 24/7. But we put emphasis on family, sport and a balance between work and free time.
Yeah we did the french canals with zero experience. Loved every minute of the 7 days on the boat we hired. 1 Hour lesson n off we went. We weren't sure how to do the locks but coz there were so many, we soon got the hang of it. 😂

You guys could do a really long one starting in Amsterdam, then through the Rijn or Maas, and then canals, reach the Donau... then go the length of it until the Black Sea, turn right, and do the Dardanelles and Istanbul...

We rented a boat in France for "Canal Du Midi" & found the people fantastic. Nick I would be scared to death if I had my own boat on the canal, we witnissed one fellow reversing into 3 other boats while trying to dock. We had a fantastic vacation & would highly recommend it.
Like hearing these sort of q&a videos. Thanks for the insights. Think that the percentage of good folks vastly outnumber the asshats. At least to me is pretty much the same world wide. Hear things about a place... from people who either have never been there, or were asshats themselves. Then you go there and find out is actually pretty amazing.

We did it in 30 days but it was rushed. As for diesel, it depends on how big your engines are and how much they burn. However there are fuel stations everywhere, so you can fill up on the trip
I lived in France (Paris) for three years. It was my observation that many American travelers come with an air of entitlement and superiority that results in a negative response from the locals. If one makes only a slight effort to be friendly toward the French people they will be pleasantly treated. Attempting to speak French goes a long way too.
Very true. In Paris, but especially outside we found people to be very friendly. One of my best experiences was taking our French car there. People seemed very pleased to see it. Watch out for radar traps though. I thought it strange that they were offering free sideways Wi-Fi in tunnels, it actually means radar. And yes, they will hunt you down to the ends of the earth to make sure you get your "Avis de vitesse"!
i know this is a mute point now, but was there an issue with sailing the pacific with a swing keel boat? not taking into account all your other reasons.
My lift keel boat has been across the Atlantic twice and the Pacific once, as well as the east coast of Australia with no problem. Hundreds of Ovnis do that. We do put a reef in above 30 knots and rest assured that if we lost the keel we could still sail at least with the wind at 90 degrees. It also has the advantage that if you hit anything the keel will swing back and not rip the bum out of your boat.
It was good to bring up cultural respect. Obviously, we Americans have earned a bad reputation for demanding things be done our way. Yet, if travelers learn to go with the flow, and give attention to local details, as you mentioned, the experience with other people and places will turn out surprisingly go much better. I think this is especially true of restaurant/dining experiences. We can't blame other cultures for rudeness if we don't bother to learn or embrace their customs.

My Grandmother adored France. After my Grandfather died she rented an apartment for a month in Paris every year. And she couldn't get the French to speak French with her (so she could practice) because the moment they heard her accent (in French) they switched the English with grace and friendliness. She got REALLY prickly when other Americans complained about the French being rude, she felt mostly it was Americans who were rude and unreasonable.
I had the same experience about going to France. Everyone said they were the rudest people on the planet. We took a bus tour all around France and I will say all these horror stories were false. Other than some restaurants where the waiters were a bit snobby which we ignored, everyone was great. One suggestion is -BE FLEXIBLE, you're a visitor in their country. I honestly think the Chinese and secondly Americans are the rudest.
Good point about the waiters. In France it is a profession, not something they do while studying or when waiting for a proper job. My experience is that if you treat them as professionals and accept their recommendations they can orchestrate a dining experience that is the best ever. You may hardly wait 5 minutes between courses and they will scold the kitchen staff if things do not go to plan. To contrast that, a so called exclusive club I attend has employed a load of school leavers, students and loafers for wait staff in it's restaurant. You literally have to call the catering manager on the phone to get the laissez-faire indolents to get your next course. I think if I ordered by Twitter or Facebook they would respond more quickly. Chinese, rude? A least they have a sense of humour about it, in fact some of them are hilarious if they are telling you off. One even wrote her insult on a post it note and gave it to me! Just another thing. In a Paris restaurant the waiters borrowed our children's scooters and went scooting around the tables, which raised the mood considerably.
my dream for years has been to do this canal du midi trip you did and i wonder how expensive it is to hire a boat and if you can give some tips about what to look for in a hire-boat company and how to prepare for a hire boat trip.
They give you brief training in French! If you don’t understand French its a bit difficult. Agree with you about the friendliness of the French, just make an effort to speak their language and you will find they are wonderful!

@@sailingrubyrose current favorite: Chicken Noodle from leftover rotisserie chicken (usually 2 breasts for us, dark meat would be welcomed) chopped, 1 chopped up fennel, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped up onion, as much garlic as you like (about 6 cloves for us), 8 oz pasta (we use wide noodles but whatever you have is good) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan or Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, some chopped parsley (1/4 cup) or basil (2-3 Tablespoons) (or both!) and 8 cups chicken broth. Saute the fennel, onion, carrots and about 1 teaspoon or more salt about 8 minutes, add the garlic about 6 minutes in. Add the chicken broth and bring to boil, lower heat to simmer and add the pasta, cook till the pasta is al dente. Dump in the chopped chicken and cook till it's warm, add grated cheese at this point with the basil or parsley and stir vigorously. Sometimes I add oregano with the chicken. Serves 4, add a baguette sliced with butter spread on it. yum.
Great stuff and yes the Parisians are rude and unfriendly BUT once you get to the rest of the country they are like the Irish very helpful and friendly .
Go to the Alsace and try do order food in german or english because you can't speak french you might eat nothing. When you then tell the waiter you are from Austria they can suddenly speak german and english with you. French people are very patriotic and love you when you can speak there language.
I always figured the reason people are less friendly in some places has to do with the population density. If you smiled or said "g'day" to everyone passing by, you'd become hoarse in New York City. By extension, I suspect its the same reason why Parisian French people have earned their reputation. Thus, if one was to be (unexpectedly) outgoing in those places, it might be misinterpreted by some lonely characters. Maybe Japan is an exception; they have a deeply rooted culture that leans toward civility.
16:06 Why did you make it yourself so hard? Just tie your line to the stair to stop the boat. I know: Easy said, when you sit on your chair in your living room watching somebody else doing it ;-)
Haha, much easier said than done! But the boat moving wasn’t the problem- it was attaching the line to the bollard that was the tricky part. You couldn’t just leave the line attached to the ladder, because the water will rise in the lock and then your line would be attached underwater, roughly where the bow thruster is... 😊
The discussion about French personalities, and visiting foreign countries, and expecting those people to cater to your familiar expectations, has always been a frustration for me. If a person is going to get upset about French people not behaving like English people, why did they go to France? Just stay in England where you're happy.
The problem for 'the French' is the fact in the English speaking world they are viewed as Frogs, those nasty onion sellers and all those 'nice' stereotypes. Most English people regard them as backward. Proust normally isn't in a curriculum in high school, what is more annoying, even the name Proust is regarded as a mistake in most English spell checkers...
Nonsense, France is the most popular tourist destination for Brits. Nearly 9 million of us go there on holiday every year. On top, there are an estimated 400,000 Brits living in France too and approx 300,000 French live in the UK too, 200,000 in London. We love the French people in the main so not sure where you get your bias from. To be honest, you sound a bit of a snob, fyi most French people haven't read Proust and most English people haven't read Shakespeare.

Why don’t you rent a peniche on the canal and try it out? There are lots of companies that will charter you one with little experience required

Nope, no issue with the swing keel at all. 🙂

Good point about the waiters. In France it is a profession, not something they do while studying or when waiting for a proper job. My experience is that if you treat them as professionals and accept their recommendations they can orchestrate a dining experience that is the best ever. You may hardly wait 5 minutes between courses and they will scold the kitchen staff if things do not go to plan. To contrast that, a so called exclusive club I attend has employed a load of school leavers, students and loafers for wait staff in it's restaurant. You literally have to call the catering manager on the phone to get the laissez-faire indolents to get your next course. I think if I ordered by Twitter or Facebook they would respond more quickly. Chinese, rude? A least they have a sense of humour about it, in fact some of them are hilarious if they are telling you off. One even wrote her insult on a post it note and gave it to me! Just another thing. In a Paris restaurant the waiters borrowed our children's scooters and went scooting around the tables, which raised the mood considerably.
my dream for years has been to do this canal du midi trip you did and i wonder how expensive it is to hire a boat and if you can give some tips about what to look for in a hire-boat company and how to prepare for a hire boat trip.
Depends on time of year and which boat- look up Le Boat and Locaboat (the two main companies) and get a quote from them. 🙂

They give you brief training in French! If you don’t understand French its a bit difficult. Agree with you about the friendliness of the French, just make an effort to speak their language and you will find they are wonderful!

I've meet quite a few ex sailors and deep sea fishermen on the canals. Not as pretty as France but relaxing place to be.

leftover rotisserie chicken (usually 2 breasts for us, dark meat would be welcomed) chopped, 1 chopped up fennel, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped up onion, as much garlic as you like (about 6 cloves for us), 8 oz pasta (we use wide noodles but whatever you have is good) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan or Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, some chopped parsley (1/4 cup) or basil (2-3 Tablespoons) (or both!) and 8 cups chicken broth. Saute the fennel, onion, carrots and about 1 teaspoon or more salt about 8 minutes, add the garlic about 6 minutes in. Add the chicken broth and bring to boil, lower heat to simmer and add the pasta, cook till the pasta is al dente. Dump in the chopped chicken and cook till it's warm, add grated cheese at this point with the basil or parsley and stir vigorously. Sometimes I add oregano with the chicken. Serves 4, add a baguette sliced with butter spread on it. yum.

Go to the Alsace and try do order food in german or english because you can't speak french you might eat nothing.
When you then tell the waiter you are from Austria they can suddenly speak german and english with you.
French people are very patriotic and love you when you can speak there language.

I always figured the reason people are less friendly in some places has to do with the population density. If you smiled or said "g'day" to everyone passing by, you'd become hoarse in New York City. By extension, I suspect its the same reason why Parisian French people have earned their reputation. Thus, if one was to be (unexpectedly) outgoing in those places, it might be misinterpreted by some lonely characters. Maybe Japan is an exception; they have a deeply rooted culture that leans toward civility.

Haha, much easier said than done! But the boat moving wasn’t the problem- it was attaching the line to the bollard that was the tricky part. You couldn’t just leave the line attached to the ladder, because the water will rise in the lock and then your line would be attached underwater, roughly where the bow thruster is... 😊
Those “unfriendly” comments probably came from Americans. I’ve heard it my whole life. But I’ve never experienced it myself

How French people treat you depends on your nationality.
The discussion about French personalities, and visiting foreign countries, and expecting those people to cater to your familiar expectations, has always been a frustration for me. If a person is going to get upset about French people not behaving like English people, why did they go to France? Just stay in England where you're happy.

The problem for 'the French' is the fact in the English speaking world they are viewed as Frogs, those nasty onion sellers and all those 'nice' stereotypes. Most English people regard them as backward.
Proust normally isn't in a curriculum in high school, what is more annoying, even the name Proust is regarded as a mistake in most English spell checkers...
Nonsense, France is the most popular tourist destination for Brits. Nearly 9 million of us go there on holiday every year. On top, there are an estimated 400,000 Brits living in France too and approx 300,000 French live in the UK too, 200,000 in London. We love the French people in the main so not sure where you get your bias from. To be honest, you sound a bit of a snob, fyi most French people haven't read Proust and most English people haven't read Shakespeare.
