      Ive been a phlebotomist 30 years this was terriable you do not put your nail into a patient ever. You should be able to locate vein without putting your nail in.a patient as a land.mark. you invert as soon as u collect the blue tube .

    The reason he didn't take the tourniquet off in a minute because he was demonstrating how to draw blood correctly. This is one of the best videos so far that I have seen that explains everything from the begging to the end correctly. I am in a Phlebotomy class and this is exactly how my instructor taught us and she has been doing this for over 12 years.

      I want to do phlebotomy as there is a school my boyfriends best friends wife just went to in our area and she has a job after doing it 7 weeks with the 2 week clinical included. I want to do this and then LPN but the 60 seconds makes me a little anxious. I feel like I would mess it up.

    I've been an MA for 2 yrs now, doing blood draws is my favorite part of the job, after a while you enjoy doing them while having a good chat with the patient until you get rolling veins it becomes a challenge which I don't back down from but you definitely dont want to stick the patient more than 3 times we would send our patients to Quest labs in such cases. Instructor was great though very throughly explained!

      also....idk if anyone else noticed...but he left the tourniquet on way too long? it's only supposed to be on for 30-60 seconds upon entering the last tube...not after everything is already done. it helps flow to run more smoothly as well to take it off appropriately. Also lessens the risk of hemolyzed blood samples.

    medical assistant here ! i’m trained in Phlebotomy CPR and EKG/CKG it is extremely important that the patient information is correctly identified after greeting your self and explaining the procedure ! it’s also very important to make sure all collection tubes and the needles are NOT expired lastly a tourniquet should only remain on the arm for no more than 60 seconds and should not be pinching the skin & we will only feel the palpitation of the vein with our pointer finger.

  • @BharbieHarleyy
    @BharbieHarleyy ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Btw pulling back the needle can cause the punctured site to bleed always do you best to hold steady no one wants bruising or to be seen as a pin cushion & most importantly IDENTIFICATION IS KEY all blood specimen samples must be labeled with all identifying information for the patient and finally your initials ! i hope this helps someone

    He didn't identify the patient correctly, didn't use two identifiers (name and DOB), he put the tape on the edge of the counter while he drew, which is an infection prevention issue, there shouldn't be blood oozing from the puncture site, (poor needle placement) and I believe a slight inversion of the tubes right after filling and removing form the hub is better practice then waiting until you complete the venipuncture.

    about 2 months ago my house doctor applied massive pressure with gauze on the needle while it was still in my vein, resulting in him puncturing right through my vein and cutting into a tendon. it caused a hematoma the size of a tennis ball. my arm was purple blue black for almost 4 weeks and now 2 months later my arm is still in pain and I can hardly use it.. I have 20 yrs of hard rolling martial arts under my belt with many many injuries and this is by far worst than anything that happened in the dojo..

    Okay once you started to get the blood you should of released your tourniquet. The next thing is I noticed that the needle came out of the patient's arm a little bit that is how you got the blood around the bevel. You will not see any blood other than that particular event or situation happening. Everything else was good to go.

    • @nicolekear3911
      @nicolekear3911 ปีที่แล้ว

    He's obviously not in a clinic with a sink, its like an office with computers (not safe at all if it was the pt's home it'll be okay but always next or by a sink for accidents). I do see a sharps container next to his left. Most of the time the phlebotomy do wash there hands before they see the pt but they should always do it up front of the pt. You should always wear gloves when touching a pt, especially for veins (blood) and when touching all the accessories items you need to perform your job, safely without contaminating everything b/c then if you handle everything without gloves its no longer sterile. light blue tubs inverting 3-4 times and red tubes inverting 5 times. If a needle stick occurs always milk the area clean it and the tell your boss immediately. Hopefully you know who, what, when, where the needle was last came from what pt! If not you'll never know.

    As a MA in training this is a good video. However, there were some parts that I don’t agree with, such as digging a nail into a patient. I think I’d rather remember the site with a landmark or something on the patient arm. I just did a draw yesterday on a classmate that was awful and I felt horribly. I did end up getting blood after the third try but I forgot to pull the tube out before I pulled out the needle and she had a massive pool of blood come out. It’s a process and I know it gets better with practice. Good points and I know the more I practice the better I will get.

    • @afrodityketsi1960
      @afrodityketsi1960 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It basically means that the tip of the needle is still in but most of the bevel is out hence the blood is coming straight out..that will make the negative vacuum of the tube come out and you wont be able to get any blood in there. As the vaccum comes out, the tube makes a sound and it does suck up some of the blood that's around the needle. After that, the site starts bleeding and you need to push the needle in a little and get a new tube

    This is awesome. The best I've seen 9nline so far. He really goes into detail, does the instructor have one for starting IV lines especially for giving a pt contrast😅. That would be so helpful to me 🤗

    I had my blood drawn today....they needed to collect 2 vials.....well they got one, but then my vein stopped giving any blood....so instead of sticking me again, the girl just opened the first vial and poured half into another one and said "we're good". I left, but thinking on the way home that that was probably not ok. Should I call my Dr and tell him what happened? Or are my samples ok? It was for CBC and A1C

      Bwuh? God no, that's not ok. Call your doctor, lol.

    • @ninamorris9023
      @ninamorris9023 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +dhide14 that's perfectly fine. In some cases. It's odd that your phlebotomist just stopped getting blood the person either move the needle deeper into your vein while switching tubes or pulled out a little which would cause blood to no longer enter the tubes.

    • @janinemurdock2041
      @janinemurdock2041 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's really not ok. If all they were drawing was reds, which I doubt, then it might be ok, but depending on what type of tube they were drawing into and what tests were being done, you have to worry about cross-contamination of anti-coagulants, and having an insufficient blood-to-additive ratio, both of which can really throw off some tests. So no, splitting a tube like that is decidedly not "perfectly fine".

    • @ninamorris9023
      @ninamorris9023 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then why is there a transfer device? Obviously if blood was drawn in a lavender tube and then transferred to a tiger top tube that is bad. But you are permitted to transfer blood from one tube to another..

    • @janinemurdock2041
      @janinemurdock2041 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Transfer devices are to get blood from a syringe into a tube, typically. But pour-offs from one into another should be avoided if at all possible, at least, like I said, depending on the tube. Order of draw is there for a reason for all the tubes, not just edta vs chemistry. In an emergency situation or in the case of a *really* difficult draw, then doing that is acceptable, but depending on what the tubes were, they could very well be getting a call from the lab wanting this girl to get redrawn anyway because her potassium is mysteriously and 'fatally' through the roof. It would have, assuming he or she didn't, been better if the phleb at at least spent a little more time fishing or even tried the other arm.
      Also, again, additive-to-blood ratios are important.

    Blood coming out means you’re not in deep enough. You can always pull back but it’s harder to go back in if you’re not deep enough.

    • @dawnwalkerwolf9655
      @dawnwalkerwolf9655 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been there before. The important thing is to keep cool and be calm. Cuz if you freak out doing this, you could hurt yourself and the pateint as well. They have dummy arms to practice this on. The point is to go slowly and at your own pace. After a while, you'll get use to it and be faster at drawing blood

    Thanks for the helpful tip. Everything went right except when the phlebotomist invert the tube. As per my knowledge, Red Stoppers doesn't need to be inverted since it has no additives or anticoagulant. Isn't?

    • @felipacar74
      @felipacar74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The red should have clot activator but less than the tiger top. That's why it takes longer to clot. Usually if you have time to wait, should clot very good in 1hr.. I've seen plastic red top and glass red top. I think the glass has no additive.

    • @felipacar74
      @felipacar74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You invert so it will mix with the clot activator and so it will clot faster

  • @felipacar74

    Very good video. I imagine he was nervous because we're suppose to wipe hands before and after handling gloves. Also show the patient his saples to make sure the correct labels are on them. Other than that, good job.

  • @asr347
    @asr347 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I watched other videos and what I noticed is he didn't was or sanitized his hands before putting on the gloves and the blue was supposed to come off after 60 secs or less. I've never seen blood come outside the needle like that in my entire life.
