- When we meet David Frank he is a mess. A wounded lion. His spirit shattered by the death of his wife, this formerly successful corporate attorney spends days in his bathrobe with his only real companion, his beloved bulldog, Brutus. The only reason why i am watching is that i am concerned that Brutus is dead but i am hoping for a miracle.

Many months have since passed. Dogs can mourn too for a loss. But they can also recover from a loss and find new happiness again. Dogs are very dear creatures and ultimately loyal. Many humans can learn a lot from dogs.

It was a good movie! For many a year I contemplated whether God was, wasn't or a maybe. Then one day I had an experience where I realized that God was a symbol for that which cannot be named, defined or described. In other words, what the word "God" was pointing to was that which is beyond words, symbols and form. It was soon after that experience that I began to use the idea of space as a metaphor for God. After all, what is not held by space and where is space not?
It makes know sense that he would even leave the dog there.

I didn’t understand the ending. What make Frank decided to believe that God is real and to drop his case ?
Your answer starts at 1:29:25 where Frank answers his own question about why God destroyed his house. He answers for God and calls the destruction of the house a gift, to get him out of being stuck in grief with a hardened heart. Since indeed it worked and he is now able to overcome the grief and start to live again, he accepts it as if it indeed is a gift. And is thankful for it. He drops the case, as soon as he realizes, that what seemed an act of meanness, actually was an act of kindness in disguise.
I almost quit watching after Brutus & the tornado…but continued on.
My personal experience: when my 33 year old daughter lay dying in the hospital, I prayed for him to save her. I had rarely asked for anything & have been a good person. My prayers weren’t answered. That made me question my beliefs & I admittedly was very mad at him. Idk how I feel now, 10 years later. But when someone says everything happens for a reason I take exception. There was no positive in the loss of my daughter. She left 3 children. Their father had been killed in an auto accident 2 years prior. I can’t come up with a reason for this! “It is god’s will” is not helpful!

You are right. "It is God's will" is not helpful. At all. I've had more than my fair share of suffering in this world. Am suffering right now. That's why I clicked on this movie, just to see what 'answer' someone else came up with...
I used to have answers. Now, I mainly have questions. Beneath it all - even beneath me calling God by the worst of names in the depth of the pain - my heart goes out to Him. Who shared in our suffering. And Who one day Will wipe every tear from our faces.
Until then I keep hoping for the end of the suffering. I keep wondering why. But there are no answers.
This I think I do know: that God made everything good at the beginning and that mankind itself blew it and we are all living with the consequences. I know that the devil is a liar. Who comes to steal, kill and destroy. That's not God's doing. But why the Almighty permits it? I've heard something about free will of humans. Still, it doesn't add up and it doesn't feel right.
There is no positive in the loss of your daughter. I'm very sorry for all of your deep loss! There is no positive in the suffering I go through. But it won't have the last say. And all those, who choose unrighteousness will one day pay, if they don't really repent and find unmerited grace in Jesus.
He has the last say. This mortal will put on immortality. No more death, no more suffering. Loved ones reunited in Him for all of eternity. That's my belief and my deepest longing. I don't know how, but somehow none of this suffering will last. None of these unbearable burdens will cross the line of eternity. Joys unspeakable await us and those gone before us are IN that joy already if they put their trust in Jesus. And He even saves in the very last minute. Second even.
May He give us grace and faith to hold on to Him, who shared in our suffering voluntarily.

a more likely plausible suit about what "Act of God" means would be suing the insurance company and making them prove it was an act of God. and challenge the limitations of coverage for the house.
true, but the tornado and the destruction of the house is just a McGuffin. The core of the movie is every bad thing that happens to people - good people - and the role of organized religion in providing a rationale why.

There are only 2 really great losses; someone missing the chance to know and serve and belong to God, and someone choosing to be the kind of person who does harm to others and likes doing it. Now, those are truly tragedies. To "lose" someone who belongs to God is a temporary thing, if you belong to God also!!! It hurts yes, but, it's not so hard to say goodbye when you're both going to be spending eternity in heaven together. Im autistic and i enjoyed this film. Id say what i liked about it, but i feel its a decent enough movie to not do spoilers in the comments. Its not an overly complex film. I feel they could have made this too heavy to absorb, but it was kept neutral enough to be entertaining. I feel the whole idea around it provides unavoidable tropes, the kind driven by angry folks for years so if youve ever listened to angry drunk people enough, or whatever..... folks who struggle anyway..... you may have heard some of the shiz thats in this film. I feel its a common enough occurrance that people are angry at god, that a lawyer type film covering the topic without being offensive is a decent challenge for filmmakers and i think this was alright. In order to carry off such a thing you gotta respect the material.... and people. Even if you dont like the film, i feel there is a place in society for films like this.

Someone wrote this after watching Bruce Allmighty. There was also an episode of Ally McBeal... All poor execution of a good idea. Disappointing unfortunately. On the positive side, I haven't seen this actor since all forgotten Lost, so it's good to learn he had other jobs.
I was going to give this movie a 1 out of 10 because of Brutus' death and I suspect the filmmaker suspected that and threw him in at the very end which I KNEW he was probably going to do which I waited until the very end and it was clever of filmmaker to start roll of creits to give impression Brutus died but there was no way he did!

He was not suing "God",......He was suing the Churches that take it upon themselves to "represent" the Entity they call "God". What a great movie. It certainly made one question things and opened one to new thought. I thought initially that this was going to be a fabrication and distortion with humor thrown in, but how wrong can one be?. What a good story.

I think you are right. There are 3 types of sin that the enemy uses to make us suffer: 1)when we hurt ourself 2)when we hurt someone else and 3)when someone else hurts us. That covers almost all of suffering. Then there are accidents and natural disasters. Rom 8:28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Billy Connolly "The Man That Sued God". The church had to prove that god exists and destroyed his boat.
Wish I could sue God ! I had a mobile home fall on me while rescuing a dog. Lost both my sons and my father defending this country. My husband committed suicide. My family due to life is gone. Now at 60 plus im homeless. People are rude! Especially Christians! God turned his back on us if he's really up there!

An indie movie way better as both an act of cinema but equally as a well-written, well-acted, well-directed terrific film than any of the push-the-message garbage from Hollywood.
As a Muslim I can say that this man understands religion better than those God's people. Indeed in Islam society have to come together and help those in need. It is God's order to give ZAKAT and SADAQAH in behalf of God.
