  • Throughout the Tudor Period, there was great bloodshed and turbulence across England, and one Queen who tried her best to unite her population was Elizabeth I. However her reign was still a time where people were going to the gallows and the executioner’s block for their crimes, but she is remembered for being a Queen that defeated the Spanish Armada and also executed her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. However Elizabeth I never married, and never had any children or heirs that would carry on the Tudor royal family, and with this she became the last Tudor Monarch. Her death in 1603 spelled the end for the Tudor dynasty, and the throne passed to James I, the Scottish monarch. But Elizabeth’s death greatly upset the population, and in her final years she was not the monarch that she once was. She had grown depressed and upset, and also would seemingly lose her zest for life. However what was the story of her funeral, and also her incredible burial inside the heart of the most grand church and abbey in England?

Marie Stuart hadn't been Queen in almost 20 years, before she was executed. She wouldn't have been executed had she not plotted to kill Elizabeth and steal her crown.
While Marie Stuart had a blood claim she didn't have a legal claim to the English throne.
    Henry VIII removed her line.

The Tudors didn't have a strong claim either, It was weak at best. The crown was won by conquest more so than birth right.
Mary made terrible choices, but who wouldn't plot for freedom after being kept in captivity and tight restriction for 20 years?
Henry VIII removed her line, but that request was discarded, just like Edward's VI plans to remove Mary and Elizabeth from the line of succession.

@@NCKrypotonite33 please everybody knows Elizabeth of York marriage to Henry VII was the only reason the Brits didn't rise against him.
Marie Stuart made her own bed over and over, again and again.
Refusal to listen to those who knew Darnley, Bothwell, John Knox, most importantly she refused to listen to those who knew not only Scotland but the Scots themselves.
Marie Stuart made her own choices, she knew wearing the English colors in France was a huge risk. She did it anyway.
Marie Stuart's family really screwed up France, so they didn't want her. Spain didn't care about her, the Vatican, didn't care especially after her third marriage was to a protestant. The protestant ceremony sealed that deal.
Had she not escaped her prison in Scotland she wouldn't have gone to England and been locked up. She was a very expensive prisoner, but she has made her own bed. Had she stayed in Scotland she probably would have been executed 20 years before she was.
Life is about the choices we make Marie Stuart made many bad choices. I believe she plotted to kill Elizabeth because she was tired of this world and the cruelty it often carries.
Edward VI did remove his sister's, Jane Grey paid the price, for his choice. Her father couldn't leave well enough alone so Mary I took care of the problem.

Editing to add a question...was it Queen Elizabeth that chose James as the next King, when she knew that she was dying? Or was it the Council that decided this, after her death? Thank you in advance 💖

“Helped” to defeat the Spanish Armada? Helped? It was her navy that defeated the Spanish. Thus, Elizabeth defeated the Spanish Armada.

Elizabeth the first rode to Tilbury and was there with her army incase the Spanish made it ashore. She was on a white horse wearing silver armour and gave an incredible speech to her army that rallied them up to fight.
She was ready to go to battle to protect England. Luckily the weather was on her side and the Spanish never made it ashore.

There's great essay on this that I recommend: it's by Julia M. Walker, and it's entitled "Reading the Tombs of Elizabeth I." James I had political reasons for not fulfilling Elizabeth's wishes upon her death, ultimately done in favor of developing and maintaining the narrative of the peaceful succession between rulers, which is the narrative still upheld today in museums and walking tours such as the one provided by Westminster Abbey.
