The lyrics have nothing to do with Brandi Carlile. The original is by twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth. When they joined Brandi they carried this song in their pocket.
Phillip John and Timothy Jay Hanseroth are twin musicians best known for being the bassist and guitarist, as well as songwriters with Brandi Carlile in her eponymous band.

The song absolutely does have something to do with Brandi Carlile. The Twins and she write together and sometimes separately, but they are connected. She heard this song from them and it created their connection and the beginning of their long term relationship. Brandi wouldn't be able to sing these sentiments with such passion and heart if she wasn't all in with this emotionally, and had this experience herself many times with loves and losses in her youth. Now when she sings it, after having been married to her wife for over ten years, it has a different meaning because she found the someone to tell her story to - both the fans and her wife and two children. Brandi Carlile is all of them and all of them are Brandi Carlile.
