  • Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, takes us on a journey into Mushroom Wonderland to discover how to find 4 (actually 5) types of Morel mushrooms in one day. By visiting a couple of different habitats at the right time inb spring, we manage to find a bunch of the delicous edible mushrooms growing wild in Washington State.
    The Morchella snyderi can be found growing naturally on the eastern slopes of the cascxade mountians right around mid May to mid June. They seem to like the conifer covered mountianside where not too much sun hits, so they can take advantage of the moisture left behind by the recent snowmelt. A combination of the moist soil and the new spring temperatures makes for great growing habitiat for the delicious fungi. Along side them grows an unusual type of "Morel" called the "Thimblecap Morel" or Verpa conica. It is not a typical Morel although it is in the family of morels in the family Morchellaceae.
    Then we dramatically shift gears and drive an hour and a half westward over Hwy 2 to a forest fire site that happened in 2022 known as the Bolt Creek fire near Skykomish, WA where we encounter a few othert types of Morels including Morchella elata , a black burn morel that is famous for its good flavor, the Yellow Morel- Morchella esculenta- growing in abundance on the edge of the burn, and some elusive and delicious sought after edible fire Morels known as Morchella exuberans.

    Great job! I'm in Wisconsin and I've never seen a black morel! So cool! We find a lot of blonde morels and they are sooooooo good! Very informative. I enjoyed it. Thank you to you and your wife. Good luck in the future! ❤ 🍄

      in WI also. Yes blond moeso and a few times a very large type after the other types. I think the lack of rain made a big difference here this year. Next year 😊

      @@bryan4204U thank you for your response. I agree. Not enough rain made a big difference. I admire your knowledge of mushrooms. I'm always tempted to hunt for different mushrooms, but I'm just too afraid.

    I've heard polypore's described as the fruiting bodies of the fungus that killed the tree.

    • @mushroomwonderland1
      @mushroomwonderland1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That does happen sometimes. Red belted conch is known as a butt rot decayer, and sometimes it can kill trees. Other polypore type mushrooms can also have that effect.

    Hi Aaron, I live in Western WA and recently found your channel- thanks for sharing such helpful content. I’ve had mixed luck with naturals so far this year between Cle Elum and Leavenworth, with my usual honey holes lagging a bit. Even had luck as high as 4,200ft but looks like you’ve done well closer to 3,000ft. How much emphasis do you put on North facing slopes? Is it generally South facing is better earlier in the season, and North facing later on? I might try the bolt creek fire soon too if I can find a decent access point. Happy hunting!

    • @mushroomwonderland1
      @mushroomwonderland1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      North face 8s significant because no direct sunlight, which means more moisture which mushrooms love.if the ground is still wet, and it's very early season, the sun may help warm the soil to 50° which is optimal for fungi.

    Hey man! Happy mushroom foraging! I don't know if it is the quality of the video on my end, but it seems to me that those monster blondish ones at the end looked tomentose. Could they possibly be Morchella tomentosa?

    Great video.I hunt naturals in west central Alberta.I checked a spot I found 96 in one day last year .I stumbled across it by accident on the side of a road.we’ve been checking it every week . Last Monday on the edge I found 12 nice freshys. Then we found nine baby’s the size of your pinky. Now we wait a few days and sneak in .we’ve had fire drought and then 5 days ago 70 mm of rain and sunshine since. There lots of delicious naturals out there . Put your time in over the years and be ready .👍

    I'm in norcal and have yet to find a single morel this year. I checked the great morel map and there is only ONE recorded May sighting in my area. I wonder if most people just aren't reporting them or if they are really that uncommon this year.

    Excellent video as always Aaron! Thanks for sharing your successes and knowledge.
    Couple questions for you. Was it dry out there because it looked pretty dry and sounded dry and how long ago was that burn? It hasn't rained here in northern California for about a month But there is melting snow run off in the higher elevations about an hour away.
    These mushrooms as you know take a lot of time gas and effort to find. Wish I had never tasted them!
    Keep the videos coming

    • @mushroomwonderland1
      @mushroomwonderland1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is pretty dry! Drier than usual. We had quite a bit of rain earlier in the spring but it's been really hot lately. I don't imagine the season is going to last long. Yeah it does cost a lot in gas, takes a lot of effort to find them but it's really in the journey. I could buy a morels but I'm honestly not that interested in eating them as I am and hunting them and eating them. You know what I mean? Happy hunting and mush love.
