The bass break in the bridge is an ICONIC moment in music.
I was a mod in the 60s,and the Whos. My Generation was our anthem. Great time.
The best part of listening to groups like The Who, was listening to their music as it hit the radio for the very first time.
The Who = Mostly-controlled Chaos. Keith Moon was one of my inspirations to become a drummer, the other was Ian Paice of Deep Purple. Moon's drumming was all over the place, Townshend's guitar playing inspired a lot of young guitarists, Entwhistle always looked like the calm one of the group - all while playing some of the most extreme bass lines, and Daltrey's vocals were always wonderful to hear...even his raspy screams. Check out more of their stuff and you'll find some wonderful songs to listen to.
Won't get fooled again is my favorite Who song. You Better You Bet and Behind Blue Eyes are great too.
I've got to go with Baba O'Reily. The beginning in pure magic.

The entire Who's Next album is my favorite Who song. :)
This was my generation when it came and we never wanted to get old. Then we do get old and we think about this song and if we're lucky we feel like dancing.

Roger Daltrey himself is now a couple of decades older than the people he complained about when he sang the line, _"Hope I die before I get old."_ So I guess he changed his mind about that.

I'm not sure if you've watched any of the "CSI" TV shows, but one of their songs got used as the theme to that respective show. For the one that started it, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", they use "Who Are You?", "Won't Get Fooled Again" is for "CSI:Miami", "Baba O'Riley" in "CSI: New York", and "I Can See For Miles" in "CSI: Cyber". The one that's currently on the air, "CSI: Vegas", is a follow-up to the original series, so they use "Who Are You?" for that as well.
At one point during the original series, lead singer Roger Daltrey made a guest appearance.

A recommendation for further exploration of The Who’s music is the album titled “Who’s Next”.
The first time I saw The Who was July 6, 1989 at RFK Stadium in Washington DC on their 25th anniversary tour. It was an absolutely amazing show. Local radio station, WCXR, held a banner contest where they would select the two people with the best homemade banner that mentioned the radio station and The Who to be moved to the tenth row, center stage. And that's how the young lady I went with and I got moved from nearly the last row of the nosebleed section on the other side of the stadium down to the 10th row.

I was also at this same show as well, my younger brother got us the tickets at the box office in front of Robert F. Kennedy Stadium more than two months before the concert date. It also was the 20th anniversary of the Tommy album, so there were significant parts of the album in the show that hadn't been performed on tour in more than 18 years. In addition, the kids of the Vice-President of the U.S. at the time (Dan Quayle) were at this show in a mezzanine level box, chaperoned by their mother, Mrs. Marilyn Quayle.

I remember when there was a pay-per-view of The Who farewell tour. This was 1982. We all pitched in to rent the show. Back then you had to wire up your speaker from TV to your stereo to get it to play through your stereo speakers. Well worth it.
I spent what was at the time a lot of money to see their farewell tour and It stopped being worth it when they went on the next tour.

So much of this song uses stuff that’s cognitively unexpected, like the stammer, & the drum at the end. Makes it interesting to listen to, & drives home the vibe of the song, love of my youth & I won’t be hemmed in. This song definitely has lasting power.

The "thing" at the end of the song where the band jumps up at once and crashes the Last Note is called a "Schwump". The best modern music was created in the 60's & 70's. Another explanation for the stutter is there were two different and mutually antagonistic youth cultures in England at the time: Mods and Rockers. Rockers listened to Gene Vincent and wore black leather jackets and blue jeans, worked mostly blue collar jobs like auto mechanics. Mods dressed sharper, suit and tie but with a green wartime over coat on top, rode scooters, and worked entry level white collar jobs. Mod also were known to take amphetamines to juggle their day jobs with their night time partying, so quite often developed that characteristic amphetamine stutter. The Who were a well known Mod band back in the day.

He also had a role in the original CSI on TV, which had a Who song as its theme (as did all the CSI shows).

You probably have heard The Who's songs all your life, just not realized it was them. Their music has been used for some TV commercials for cars and computers for example. They are in the Woodstock movie, made many TV appearances, and had a long string of hits into the 1980s. Lead singer Roger Daltrey became an actor (since you like movies) - starring in "Tommy" (their Rock musical); "Lisztomania"; and as a continuing supporting role in the Highlander TV series.

A friend of the family (an Ulsterman) was a young record company executive in 1960s and the first job assigned to him was to try to keep The Who “ in line” to fulfil their contracts. (He later was Executive Producer for ABBA.)

Good place to start with The Who! So many more gems to listen to. They are a great band and have a deep catalogue of hits and cool music. I vote for Led Zeppelin "Babe I'm going to leave you" next.

@@DianeJennings Led is not a he, but a band. One of the best Rock bands ever. Lots and lots of classics. Bet you would enjoi "Stairway to Heaven" a lot. But they made loads of first class songs.
The Led Zeppelin rabbit hole is a deep one, but that's a great start. Stairway To Heaven is a must do as well.
Diane, as a movie nerd you may find interesting that The Who wrote and performed one of the great Rock Operas. Called Tommy, after the main character it explores the life of a deaf, dumb blind kid. It later became a film performed by some of the greatest artists in music and film. I recommend that you watch it. It's probably a bit long for your TH-cam channel, but I think you'll truly enjoy it.

Wow! Cool for younger "generations" to discover golden oldies. Strange to think the "My Generation" of the 60's Who is now 70+ years old. Such an iconic British band, known for super loud concerts and stage antics. I feel they had 3 phases of music, their 60s stuff like My Generation, Magic Bus, & I Can't Explain, a softer side in I Can See For Miles and Miles, See Me Feel Me & Behind Blue Eyes, their 70s harder rock Pinball Wizard, Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, Love Reign O'Er Me, and Who Are You, and a more 80s style Eminence Front.
Very good choice to review. I've heard this song before, but never really listened to it. I really like the sound of the bass. And yes too expected the drum roll at the end, but nope not going to do what is expected... fits nicely with the theme of the song.

That's one of the rock songs that never "Gets Old" it's a song from my generation age 69.
I was 19 years old. What a generation.
I saw them on their farewell tour before you were born, but they re-formed less than ten years later.
They had said they wouldn't play this song again, because it didn't feel right to sing about dying before they got old, as they neared their 40's. They played two nights, one at a stadium, then at the adjacent arena. We expected the same opening song for the second show, but they opened with My Generation, and the 10000+ fans screamed in approval.

I'm a 60-year-old white dude from the USA. I've lived in the eastern half of the US my whole life, and that has influenced my tastes. That being said, here are some of the songs I seacr for whenever I run into a new reaction channel: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen; We will Rock You, also by Queen; American Pie by Don Mclean; Play that Funky Music by Wild Cherry (It was a one-hit-wonder); For What it's Worth by Buffalo Springfield (another one-hit-wonder). After that, it becomes a personality situation. You seem to like a heavy beat; you may wish to check out We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel.

I saw The Who live in Stuttgart, Germany. It was one of three times where I was almost crushed in a crowd.
The Who were famous for smashing their instruments at the end of their shows.
My favorite Who song is "Won't Get Fooled Again". It was written at a time when there were a series of revolutions taking place in Africa, where each new leader was as bad _(or worse)_ than the previous one. I enjoy listening to it during every election season, paired with the Beatles' electric version of "Revolution".
Both the drummer _(Keith Moon)_ and the bassist _(John Entwistle)_ have passed.

There's a famous episode of the late 70s-early 80s sitcom WKRP in Cincinnatti about the Riverfront Coliseum disaster in 1979, when 11 fans were crushed to death as a mob tried to force their way through a few opened doors, attempting to get the best festival seating for the first Who tour after Keith Moon's death. "it was so cold outside"
Chewie took interest as the club girl came out in Diane, as she grooved to the beat of "My Generation". Well, how could you not. The Who were always trying to subvert expectations as a band. Chewie wasn't quite sure what to make Diane's gyrations initially, but her happy noises and actions led him to not being worried, about Diane just being weird, again.

You have heard of Keith Moon probably because he was the wildest rockers ever. He exploits are legendary. Pete Townshend who wrote the songs added the stuttering just because he liked the way it sounded. As a band they hold the record for loudest concert ever which explains why he is mostly deaf now. In their early days Pete and Keith smashed up their instruments at the end of the shows.

That and the infamous escapade of Keith driving a Plymouth Continental into the swimming pool of a Holiday Inn - which was on the SECOND floor of the hotel. As far as I know they are all still banned from any Holiday inn across the USA
I just saw "The Who" in November (The remaining original members Pete and Roger are now 78 and 79 respectively). The did not die before they got old, but they still completely Rock out!. Fun reaction!
Try the song 'squeeze box" by the Who. One of those songs you sing to yourself for days on end when you are in love.
I would suggest you watch the movie _Quadrophenia_ to get a real feel for this era of time. It depicts the Mod v/s Rocker culture of the mid 1960's and a series of riots between the two groups in 1964 in a variety of seaside towns. It's based on a rock-opera of the same name, and is considered to be semi-autobiographical to the band. It's not to everyone's tastes and can be kinda slow, but it is one of the best depictions of Mod v/s Rocker culture ever filmed.

The Kinks , Pink Floyd , and Deep Purple are my favorite British bands . The Who are great too . The Half American/ Half Irishman Phil Lynnot was the frontman for the Irish band Thin Lizzy . The Boys Are Back In Town , Jailbreak , Whiskey In The Jar , and Cowboy Song are some of their hit songs .
Diane, you couldn’t do better than The Who’s “My Generation” to represent the fast, mod, style of mid-60’s England and the upcoming social tensions and clashes to come in both England and the USA. The Who was driven by a lot of incredible talent and a lot of inner conflict and before they were done broke barriers and set standards and precedents for Rock that created possibilities for decades to come.
Would there ever been Queen without The Who, would Bohemian Rhapsody ever been written without Tommy and Pinball Wizard?
So many amazing hits but their performances is a major part of they’re impact.
Woodstock, would have happened without them, but would Woodstock have had the same impact without The Who?

I'd guess that their most famous song from The Who would be _"Won't Get Fooled Again"_ off the album _"Who's Next"._ That album has several really *great* songs on it. They were also famous for the rock opera called _"Tommy"._ That's where the song _"Pinball Wizard"_ really comes from, although if you've heard that song then you've probably heard the version done by Elton John for the movie version of _"Tommy"._

The stutter was making reference to a popular drug that the youth were using that made them stutter. But it does sound good . Just saw them ( the 1/2 that are still kicking)live a few months ago! One of my favorites of all time! They got old but still rock!!

The Who also put out an album that was a rock opera called “Tommy”. It was about a deaf, mute, and blind kid. One of the cuts was “Pinball Wizard”. It was a two-record album; so there were four sides. It was made into a movie
Diane! Lovely reaction. I grew up in Detroit which was one of the first cities in the US to sprout a huge Who fan base starting like in the mid 1960s. The Who were very much British working class guys and the music resonated with the working class ethos in Detroit. We had a very forward local music promoter who heard their records and somehow booked them in a local high school auditorium and another venue in nearby Ann Arbor. Once they achieved superstar status whenever The Who played in the Detroit Metropolitan area Pete Townsend never failed to acknowledge Detroit fans for adopting them as their own so early in their careers. You will still meet Who fans who hold their Southfield High School ticket stubs from when The Who played there in 1967 or people who caught them at The Fifth Dimension in Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) a few days later. Or people who caught them at The Grande Ballroom in 1968 and 1969.

As an American AND a "music nerd"(amateur keyboardist.), this is FUN. The "British Invasion" into the US (~1962-1971~) forms the CORE of my music collection. OH, Man there's a LOT to explore! I can't wait until you get into American stuff of the era like "The Doors" and "Jefferson Airplane"! Also the lack of a "bang" finish is part of the idea of "outsider"/ noncompliance. Actually, one can consider the early tracks from "The Who" to be "proto-Punk").

You should check out the Guess Who, a Canadian band who's original guitarist, Randy Bachman formed Bachman Turner Overdrive which was also a powerhouse band.

Part of what made that song so great was the bass parts by John Entwistle. He was playing like a lead guitarist.
You were waiting for the big bang on the drums at the end. They provided this in live shows by smashing their instruments. On (IIRC) the Ed Sullivan show in the States, Keith Moon took this up a notch by secreting explosives into his drum kit and exploding them at the end of 'My Generation'. This caused some damage to Pete Townsend's hearing.
I absolutely 💕 The Who. Roger and Pete were in their 70's when I last saw them in 2017. They played for more than two hours. Amazing lads, still! Roger wrote a great book about his life, " Thanks A lot, Mr. Kibblewhite".
Another reason for the stutter is to lead to the impression that instead of saying "fa.. fa.. f.. fade away" they were about to say "fu.. fu.. fu.. fu** off"
