so happy you passed after 3 times!!! But all of them were such high levels of art and beauty, i was seriously flabbergasted when even those of such standards were rejected. The grind and competition is real😱
Congratulations, I'm so happy that all your hard work got you where you wanted to go. And I want to say: this sketchbook is a marvelous showcase of your hard work, creativity, and vision. And you clearly aren't just able to handle (constructive) criticism, but you actually think about how you'd want to address it while staying true to your own vision and creative process. For example, you didn't just colour in some pieces like a colouring page. Instead, you visibly considered how you could enrich that artwork by adding colour into the mix. Without abandoning your own vision of what you want to achieve. The colour studies also speak of that thought process. And then on top of all of that, oh my your linework! It has improved so much! The confidence! The diversity! Oof. You truly did something amazing. And of all of that after having already tried so many times. You are truly amazing. But please be careful. If they expect young people to be already this good before they even start teaching you, that means the industry will not look out for your wellbeing. And your school will probably 'prepare' you for that by already ramping up demands. Work hard, learn a lot, but don't forget to enjoy the company and creative cross-pollination of being among so many other young artists (and have them enjoy yours). And learn good habits of recognizing your healthy limits and protecting them. I see too many artists getting burned out ten years down the line because their passion made them think fun work can't exhaust you. It certainly can. Even more so, because it allows you to keep going for much longer beyond what is healthy. And employers will never tell you to do otherwise.
Dude hey, I'm applying for 2022 as well, you know, you have a type of drawing and draftmanship perfect for illustration. Whatever result you'll get from Calarts, you should try to work on an illustration book, if you ever decided to do it, i would buy it for sure. Keep it up!
Wow! There's a lot of improvement here from your previous year sketchbooks. Regardless of the outcome, congratulations on the massive improvements! Really motivational :D
Serious improvements in your architectural drawing, use of color, concept art and... the figures' faces! The only thing I noticed left to improve a little is in painting, but this sketchbook is your best yet. I hope you get in, you will have definitely earned it. I hope you see your improvement clearly and that it motivates you as well ♡
Honestly Im inspired by your dedication applying multiple years until you get in. This will be my second year applying for Calarts and I’m hoping for the best. I love your sketchbook
Congrats on getting in! This was such a cool look into your art and I relly love your pencil work and more detailed illustrations too, there is a lot of feeling in there :)
I think you will get in. Your art is super good I can tell you will make it the art industry, seriously don't give up you're basically there already!! Your colour is pretty good but it's behind your other skills. I would look into experimenting with colour schemes more. Pay attention to the the value (how light or dark) of the colours. Focusing on those 2 things turned me from a really bad case of colour-phobia to a colour-lover. Pick a colour scheme (such as analogous or split-complementary etc) and then draw something with it, don't wing it at first. Also a thing which helped me was finding and paying attention to other illustrations using a particular colour scheme. I keep a little catalogue of examples for each colour scheme. Start a sketchbook just for colour and work on it steadily. I recommend high-quality coloured pencils for a medium if you aren't sure since it behaves the most like graphite which you are already amazing at!
