that could have been a really cool moment in the battle. the avengers are trying their best, but the shitari just keep coming. and just when you start thinking they're not gonna be enough, a squadron of fighter jets come into the fight. national guard ground forces start rolling in and the commanding officer turns to captain america for orders, since the whole thing is being coordinated by fury from the helicarrier. jarvis actually does figure out it's a hive mind, and instead of the defense council ordering a nuke on manhatten, (like idiots) the nuke is a coordinated effort between iron man and fury specifically to get it through the portal and take out whatever is controlling the shitari. love the movie, but that would have been awesome.

Johnathon Fake Name just a fact for ya, the military normally helps fun movies with them in it (as long as they are portrayed well; see ironman) but for the avengers they saw shield as an ungoverned division so they pulled out, so maybe that would have been a scene (though unlikely).
The problem is that the military takes time to deploy and the battle was over in under an hour, and we actually see a couple of Jeeps with infantry firing at the chitauri, it's just that the main forcé had no time to scramble

@@GenerationFilms I'm not really disagreeing with you since you're the New Yorker and shwarma eater/lover. However, after that big battle I feel like all of the food trucks (and their proprietors) would be destroyed or otherwise nonfunctional (say the owner ran away) but an actual building could still have the proprietors cowering inside. Therefore, in this case, a deli may have been the only option for shwarma.
Also, Stark isn't a New Yorker, he's a billionaire that happens to live in New York.

The Battle of Long Island is also known as the Battle of Brooklyn and the Battle of Brooklyn Heights. The victory over the Americans gave the British control of strategically important New York City. It was fought on August 27, 1776, and was the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War to take place after the United States declared its independence on July 4, 1776. In troop deployment and combat, it was the largest battle of the entire war.
After defeating the British in the Siege of Boston on March 17, 1776, commander-in-chief General George Washington brought the Continental Army to defend the port city of New York, located at the southern end of Manhattan Island. Washington understood that the city's harbor would provide an excellent base for the Royal Navy, so he established defenses there and waited for the British to attack. In July, the British under the command of General William Howe landed a few miles across the harbor from Manhattan on the sparsely-populated Staten Island, where they were reinforced by ships in Lower New York Bay during the next month and a half, bringing their total force to 32,000 troops. Washington knew the difficulty in holding the city with the British fleet in control of the entrance to the harbor at the Narrows, and he moved the bulk of his forces to Manhattan, believing that it would be the first target.
On August 22, the British landed on the shores of Gravesend Bay in southwest Kings County, across the Narrows from Staten Island and more than a dozen miles south from the established East River crossings to Manhattan. After five days of waiting, the British attacked U.S. defenses on the Guan Heights. Unknown to the Americans, however, Howe had brought his main army around their rear and attacked their flank soon after. The Americans panicked, resulting in twenty percent losses through casualties and capture, although a stand by 400 Maryland and Delaware troops prevented a more substantial portion of the army from being lost. The remainder of the army retreated to the main defenses on Brooklyn Heights. The British dug in for a siege but, on the night of August 29-30, Washington evacuated the entire army to Manhattan without the loss of supplies or a single life. Washington and the Continental Army were driven out of New York entirely after several more defeats and forced to retreat through New Jersey and into Pennsylvania.

I still think it was weird that no massive us military force swarmed the city to try to help with this. We have bases for all branches all over the country, no way nothing could get scrambled
MCU is very bad at making realistic details on what if Alien invasions happen and how will the US military deal with it.
Realistically, the closest real world military base would be in Waterbury NY, 10 in from Canada border, home of the US Army 10th Mountain Division. Special Forces- which the National Guard has 2 Groups or Divisions, as well as Special operations Units, has Units in Rhode Island, Mass, and New Hampshire - closest to NYC for immediate reaction force, but it would take the Green Berets, say from Rhode island, 2-3 hours to arrive after alert, gear up and transport
NICOLAS Z DUTRA that would consist mostly of admin and support personnel with few combat units. And those units are mostly for security so they would not be able to make any sort of meaningful impact without a couple of hours of alert to mobilize the entirety of the division.
I mean nothing got scrambled for 9/11 so this seems pretty accurate.

I'm sure its been said before, but the simple fact that Loki was able to survive the thrashing that Hulk gave him (putting craters in the floor), shows how tough the 'average' Asgardian can be, since Loki isn't at all 'built' for combat.
Then again, he is actually a Frost Giant, so maybe they are a bit tougher than the average Asgardian (I'm almost sure there is a wiki about all this out there somewhere ^_^)

A relatively minor point: most air-to-air missiles would likely have not done much against a Leviathan's armor. Air-intercept missiles work by exploding into shrapnel near an enemy aircraft, like a really large frag grenade. For something as sophisticated as an airplane, that's usually enough: even if it doesn't explode close enough to blow the plane apart with the shock wave, the shrapnel will shred control surfaces, cut open fuel and hydraulic lines, and tear through the delicate electronics that keep it in the air. That can be enough to make the plane so hard to control that the pilot can't fly it in combat anymore, and has to retreat - or even enough to make the plane unflyable entirely, so he has to eject - but that's against airplanes, which are usually pretty thin-skinned. There are exceptions to that rule, of course *[grins* *in* *BRRRT]* but the point is a Sidewinder or AMRAAM probably wouldn't do much against a Leviathan's armor unless it exploded on contact.
Now, if the plane were loaded with *air-to-ground* missiles, that's a whole different story. A weapon like a Hellfire anti-tank guided missile uses shaped charges to blast through heavy armor, and a single good hit can turn a main battle tank into a widely-distributed collection of spare parts. That's with twenty pounds of high-explosive warhead, and a missile technology we've had since the 1980's.
If you want to go heavier, you might load up with the newer Standoff Land-Attack Missile (or its Expanded Response variant, the SLAM-ER), which carries a warhead more than twenty times as large. The Joint Strike Missile is similar, and was specifically designed to work with the F-35.
If you want to go REALLY big, you could say "screw it, warm up the cruise missiles" and break out the Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles, which pack a _half_ _ton_ of high explosive and are designed to launch from tactical aircraft and hit moving targets. DARPA and Lockheed-Martin haven't officially finished the LRASM project's development, but SHIELD probably already had a few at the time. Those things can sink cruisers; I think any Leviathans hit with them would immediately regret coming to New York.
Or Iron Man could use his, aperture blasters, his repulsor beams, to blow them all up. 👏 Problem 👏 solved. 👏

Or really just parking some ships in front of New York. The multi-role AA guns used by ships are completely capable of loading ammunition capable of cracking the Leviathans' armour.
@@thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 Ships are slow. To move around. And the didn't even specify where the navy even was at that point. Even the pan shot with the nuke scene didnt really show if the navy was nearby to respond to a sudden invasion.

Couldn't they airlift a brigade of marines or paratroopers into the city? Arm them with grenade launchers and heavy calibre battle rifles take down the Chitari infantry. It would be really cool to see Cap lead the same unit he did in WW2, but 70 years in the future.
Airlifting especially when enemy has air superiority is really risky. And besides, didn't we see the Army reach New York? Snippets of military Humvees were already on scene
No need to airlift in troops, there are military installations scattered in and around New York and a fully equipped battalion could be driving into New York within at most 2 hours of an attack. The Navy and Air Force would be enforcing air superiority within a matter of minutes.
Parachuting into a dense city is probably a bad idea and the chitari had air superiority making it a bad idea to try and airlift anything in since it will just get shot down and even if the soldiers can get into the city they will be heavily outmatched and the unit capt would have lead would all be way to old to fight or dead.
In my head canon I like to think that the NYPD and the air force were covering for the fleeing civilians while the Avengers engaged the aliens. It's the SOP in the comics and it's probably why the casualties were supposedly kept low.
I'm pretty sure the 10th Mountain had already reached cause you can see soldiers and military grade Humvees battling the chitauri on the streets. However the absence of Air force does baffle me
NYC, 6 (arguably below-par) Avengers, 2000 Chitauri, no air support, no ground backup, no police backup, no emergency units, only 74 dead.
NYC, Superman vs Zod, enough dead people to send repercussions into the sequel.

The thing is though. Superman is a shitty Mary Sue with every power but better. Whereas the avengers consist of a man in a tin can, a WW2 vet, an assassin, a fucking archer, Thor and a Hulk. Thor and Hulk are the heavy hitters, but the rest are just people. Superman however is an overpowered alien with one mineral weakness.

how does 6 average joes vs 2000 aliens threatening an entire city and resulting in minor damages exactly compare to two demigods actually going against each other without minding their environment and causing exponentially more damage?

There's actually a strange legal reason they couldn't have the military fully in the Battle. The film submitted for the Pentagon to give them planes/vehicles/gear for SHIELD to have in the background but as the script did not make it clear who SHIELD worked for or what exactly it is (later made more clear by TWS) the Pentagon denied use of military equipment in the film. Thus they couldn't use say actual military extras or units for added accuracy like in Man of Steel where actual military units were used.
