I don't know what I expected, but it definitely wasn't a dystopian future ruled by the concept never-ending lines of burgers.

I would like to submit the following idea for consideration. Subway offers 6 inch and footlong sandwiches. The desire - the NEED for a long burger is there. The people demand more BURGER, not just more meat. If I wanted more meat, I'd pay for an extra patty. They already let you do that. I don't need your CURATED burger experience, McDonalds, I'm not a SIMPLETON. Some of us have a refined palette. If I asked for "more spaghetti" you wouldn't just pour sauce onto my plate and call it a day.
In my essay, I will examine

@@analogger3058 words cannot describe how wrong you are. I will attempt to use them to do this in one paragraph.
A burger consists of AT LEAST a ground beef patty, and a bun. The burger also must at least be large enough to comfortably to hold with both hands, or else it’s classified as a slider. A Po-Boy consists of AT LEAST a meat, French bread sliced in half, and a vegetable. The Po-Boy was designed to be cheap, good, and nutritious for the construction workers in the south, who didn’t have much money, hence the name. The burger was designed to be portable, and quick to eat, being named after its place of invention in Germany. Everything from ingredients, to reasons for existing differ in all but the most base levels. If you are willing to call a Po-Boy a long burger, hell *even a submarine sandwich* a long burger; you should consider calling your mother a lizard, cause they’re both made out of flesh.

This is why I love the boys so much. They're so creative and imaginative and they work so well with each other, building off of each other's ideas, that they can make amazing and fascinating concepts like this out of mundane topics. Nobody else could take a complaint about the shape of burgers and just run with it until they end up with a worldwide net of burgers that encompasses the globe, transmits internet, finds your soulmate, kills all birds and is an origin story for The Joker.

The answer why this isn't a thing is pretty simple. As a legit burgersmith (I've worked kitchen lines almost all my life at various burger joints) the answer is obvious but multi-pronged.
    1. Dry Meat: A larger patty will take longer to cook than two smaller patties. The longer a burger cooks the more dry it is going to be.
    2. Storage: A larger patty takes up more space and requires a bigger area to store for less product
    3. A lot of places cook their patties on standarized equipment when talking about fast food joints. They're not built for strange cuts of meat or shapes outside their parameters. Making a machine that can do it is not cost effective.
    4. Harder to handle: A larger patty isn't as structurally robust as a smaller patty.
Larger, thinner, patties are not ideal for the cooking side of things and that's why you don't have them as standard.

mathematically, question asker is very correct: one 8" wide patty would be *200 square inches* , vs two 4" wide patties at a total of 100 square inches.
(for visual scale, an 8" wide patty would be literally the size of an entire pie pan or a small pizza. please do not attempt to consume an 8" wide burger unassisted, and be especially careful of internal temperature)
