    Oooooo, Amber! I'm working in the post department of a doc about the history of racism. It's absolutely amazing so far (they're gonna go interview friggin' Angela Davis in a few days)! I hope you and everyone in the chat will check it out when it comes out. I don't think I'm allowed to say too much about it atm, but you'll probably know it when it comes out, hopefully by next year or the end of this one.

      @@shaggymcgoose1970 Ok. There was a very small percentage of white people who owned slaves. Again a very small percentage. The majority of Americans were poor. The small percentage of people that did own slaves were the rich and it was mainly democrats in the south.

    We should change the stories in the textbooks when new historical facts are brought to light. We should be able to adapt when new facts are uncovered.
    An intelligent person changes their opinion when new facts are presented.

    Amber's "how we got here" should be a part of any investigation into racism. Listening to current and past episodes of "Walter edgar's journal" is a great resource for history, civil rights, slavery, civil war and more

    I still have trouble understanding why honesty is controversial. If you are part of a group that dislikes honest representation of history, you might want to question why you’re a member of that group. “Critical race theory” is simply a way to say “teaching history honestly and with appropriate context”.

    I cannot stress enough how discovering Amber's show and watching it has teach me so much. And also made me think about the parallels with my own country (I'm from Quebec, we don't even learn about slaves... and we had them
    And that is nothing compared to the First Nations, disappearing from history books when England takes over ).

    Lincoln also believed that uniting the country and ending slavery would take over 100 years. I wonder if he would have believed that 150 years later, we are still debating slavery, never really ended it, and are more divided than before the Civil War.

    Put that truth out there!! I truly appreciate the knowledge I have gained reading The 1619 Project. I’m also grateful I teach in a school district that issued a proclamation this school year acknowledging the history of injustice upon which the United States has been built. Highly recommend Clint Smith’s book How the Word is Passed.

    It's true that many enslavers thought that they treated their slaves because what slaves' owners say about how slaves felt is, of course, the most reliable information. It's true that there are accounts of slaves saying they were happy given under captivity, which of course the best way for humans to speak freely. Context is everything.

      @@teishahickman2108 Yes, indeed. There's so much we don't talk about in the mainstream in terms of trauma. With the ignorance around, I'm sure someone would argue that Stockholm syndrome is only for "White people" because it sounds Swedish... Sometimes, I tried to stay away from words too big for people with too narrow minds.
      Moreover, even if people would like to be treated like animals, does it give the right to someone else to do so? What does it say about the person who chooses to exploit those humans instead of treating them with dignity? We dehumanize ourselves too when we dehumanize others.

    In High School in NC we were taught the civil war was about “state’s rights not slavery”. This was in IB/AP US History.

      Feel like I was taught that in AP US History, too. In 1996. But also, I think my teacher was like, "Well, the South's economy would collapse withoutslavery, so they wanted to keep slavery going, of course." This was in Michigan outside of Detroit.
