How to Install an Off-Grid Drip Fuel Oil Burner in less than 12 Minutes | Best Off-Grid Heat IMO

- In this video, we cover everything you need to know about installing a fuel oil burner. From repairing and flaring copper tubing, installing chimney pipe, cleaning the pipe, cutting the pipe, and overhauling the carburetor on your fuel oil burner. All in twelve minutes!
We decided that using fuel oil this winter will free up some time and allow us to leave for a couple days if need be. When using a woodstove someone has to be home to reload the fire to keep the home warm. Using fuel oil we can set the drip to a very slow drip when we leave and our home will stay above freezing and not suck up too much fuel.
Another benefit is that by having a diesel tractor and truck if there were ever an SHTF situation we would have access to a large amount of fuel. Now on a normal basis, it is illegal to run Off-Road Diesel in an On-Road Vehicle. Especially if you're not "Off-Grid!" 😉

Thank you Dave! Oh man it’s been toasty in here! But freezing outside! Take care
You just taught me a lot. I was raised in a small 4 room home until I was about 8 years old and our only heat was one of these. Never knew how simple they were in their operation. Thank you. Yes I am quite old now.
I did not know that about the blade and I will not forget it
Really? Man it works great!
Great job Chad and without any problems. Lol
Thank you Shelly. Problems? Me? Never! 😆
Haven't fooled with one of those since my teen years we had an old farm in the country talk about run ya out that thing was hot you'll need it up there in MI no doubt👍enjoy your weekend thanks fore the share and taking me back some 50 odd years 😆🙏✌😁

Thank you. Yes it’s definitely a bit chilly out! Enjoying the stove so far for sure. Take care have a great night
Great video Chad
Thank you
Awesome thanks. Haven't used a fuel burner in many years. It was fun to see one of those again.
It’s been great so far. Nice not having to deal with firewood.
That was our main heat growing up in the fifties & sixties here in the UP. I remember my siblings and I dressing for school around it, good times. Great video as always.
This heat unit was actually here when we purchased this place. It’s working great! Take care and thank you
Good job young man. Now I'm an old man, just turned 70. Grew up w / fuel oil heat. Winters aren't as cold but I do remember my father going out in the middle of a 5 degree night to put hot wet rags on the fuel oil line that was frozen outside or at least thickened. And are you going to have a wood burner back up?? I hope everything goes good this winter. That's a beautiful family and what your doing is awesome. Keep at it, all will be well. Later
Thank you Billy. Not sure if we’ll be burning wood at all this winter. We have our old wood stove and just a weeks worth of firewood cut if we run. Into an issue with the fuel oil burner.
You are a teacher very good job, you gotta keep that team warm
Thank you David.
Very, very nice, young man! Great information for folks who use those heaters. I can still picture grandma sitting in her rocker during the winter next to her theater, watching the traffic go by her house. Great memories! I must say, I was surprised that at least one of your beautiful girls wasn't right beside you, helping! But I'm sure they were plenty busy doing other things...and I'm sure your lovely wife gave you a big, approving smile when you shucked off your boots coming into the house! Keep that new carpet fresh for a little while!👍👍 As always, a great video! Looking forward to the next Off Grid Adventure from you and your AMAZING family!! God bless you all!!✌🇺🇸🇺🇸 And hope you're getting ready for Thanksgiving!
Thank you Jim. Sounds like some great memories. These girls have been enjoying their new carpet! 😆 Definitely more now that it’s warm and cozy in here. Yes we’re going to definitely try to keep the boots off the new flooring for a while man enjoy the new smell. Have a great night Jim. Take care.
Nice! I've seen many of these types of heaters in old abandoned farm houses but never one in actual use. Would be cool to have one.
That was good to know a friend has a stove like that and she can't get it going. But she called her land lord to get it working
Your the man chad, I am glad you got heat and carpet on the floor, that will stop any cold air through the floor how keep from freezing your hiny off when you shower in your shower building
We put a buddy heater in the shower house so we don’t have to start the wood stove every day
Morning. Matco. Nice. Working good👍
Evenin! Thanks man
had a stove like that in my first small 1 bedroom home! worked great!
Great video. You are very funny, but very informative.
Thank you
Heat for this winter ✔
Well that's one thing off your list of things to do. About 1000 more to go right. Keep up the good work. God bless you guys. 🙏
Yes sooo much to do for sure!
Gotta love it! Warm and toasty for the upcoming winter. That’s a lot of progress out there on the homestead , the new carpet looks nice and comfy and safe for the girls. Peace to you all.
Thank you Bruce. It’s been quite toasty in here. Cold outside. Love it.
another good one
Thank you
The last time I worked on one of those was 1995, wow, good times.
Great job brother
Thank you!
fuel oil creates the highest btu for the money...Great video...Stay warm...
Thank you Kevin! Take care! You stay warm too!
You are a jack of all trades Chad . If your off grid you need to have some knowledge about a great deal of if systems and how to maintain them . Thx 💕💕
Thank you Carolyn. This was my first time diving into the fuel oil burner. You learn a lot when having to fix it yourself for sure.
CHAD I AM HAPPY TO BE WATCHING YOUR VIDEO MAY GOD KEEP YOU and YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY SAFE OUTTHERE GREAT VIDEO YOU ALWAYS MAKE me LAUGH thank YOU FOR that
Good to hear Rose. Thank you! Have a great weekend!
So glad you will be warmer this winter. Also glad you know how to solve your problems, you are always able to find a solution. Have a god day. Blessings
Thank you Margaret. I hope you had a great day.
Menards sells a screw on attachment with a eye on it so you can attach a rope to the brush. I used to attach paracord on either end of the brush and pull it up and down the stack. Obviously having a helper in the house to pull it down makes it a lot easier. I have never actually seen a fuel oil burner before so that was pretty cool. Thanks for the video!
The fuel oil burner is quite nice to have for sure. Makes for simplicity throughout the day. Take care
Your as handy as the guy on the red green show in Canada well done man love this channel
Thank you Jim
Great instructional video Chad. I only have one thing to complain about WHERE WAS ISSAC? lol stay warm
Thank you Cyndi. Isaac was staying warm in the RV. 😆
Great tutorial on the thermostat. You are a pretty smart guy.
Thank you.
Thank you.
A flairing kit is a must have if you depend on swamp coolers.
I don't have one of these nor do I know of anyone that does but I did find this very interesting and informative. Thanks for the video. Hope you are all doing well Chad.
Thank you Julie. We are doing great! How are you?
I honestly doubt I will ever have need of this knowledge, but I found it super interesting! You did a really good job on this video and you never know when odd knowledge will come in handy to me. Happens more often that one would think.
Thank you Paulla. How have you been?
Thank you Paulla. How have you been?
@@9252LIFE - I'm doing alright. How have y'all been? In the cabin? Warm and snug as a bug in a rug?
@@PaullaWells good to hear! We’ve been great. Snug as Isaac on a rug! 😆
Whenever I take something like that apart I always take a few good closeup pictures first before disassembling, for later reference. You guys should be nice and toasty this winter🔥🔥
Yeah I used to do that with cars but it took me longer to look at the pictures than just putting em back together. My fast paced brain works in strange clusters.. 😆
our old farm house had the old gas burners so we never had to deal with fuel oil. Very interesting.
The fuel oil burns a nice warm heat.
Great job, Chad! So glad that everybody will be nice and toasty warm during those cold UP winter days and nights!
Thank you Robert. Have a great night.
Wow … well presented … thank you … 🙏☘️😘
Thank you
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you
When they work properly they do a great job. Great video
Yes for sure
Good morning Chad.
Excellent job on the install.
Have a wonderful day.
Good morning/ night now. Hope you had a great day Lilah. Take care!
You are one funny guy by the way!! There is no way , even IF I needed fuel heat, but I’d hire some professional to do it!! God Bless stay safe!
😆 Thank you Maggie. Take care and have a great Thanksgiving!
I used to work on those and many other fuel oil burners. I have found that a CO2 gun works really well for blowing out the lines.
Great video and I thought you were going to leave out not leveling the tank. yeah water in the filter is really fun to clean out once it freezes
Thank you!
Cool my Nana said they used to have wood stove (real stove/oven wood burner). After the second war they were able to modify it to run on "coal oil" which was a lot nicer for cooking in the summer. Never seen a drip stove until now but I imagine this is pretty close to the setup with the carburetor. Glad your going to be in a cozy cabin this year!
Yes the fuel oil stove is much less work during the winter
Today I learned a thing.
Good to hear. Take care
Ha, ha, yup. Up here all the old timers have this setup. FYI there's an adapter that goes on top of the carb that is a 100% mechanical thermostat that will adjust flow with temperature. Super handy up here when it's -40.
FYI there's a REASON the back of the stove has a tee. Pull the pipe plug, shove a large nail in and spin it. It knocks the carbon into the burner and keeps your lips from tasting it... lol
Ahh nice! I thought about that tee before blowing in it but figured the numb lips would be more fun! 😂
Nice job, thanks for posting
Thank you Robert
Great video Bud.. very informative and love the humor lol makes the day not so bad 😉
Thank you. Hope you’re doing well out there. Take care.
Very clear, simple and straight instructions with all the hazard warings. Love it man, no beating about the bush. Keep up the Great work.
Thank you! Have a great night.
My father warmed us all up with fuel oil and a similar burner like that for years. Then he went to an in-floor furnace, with the grate on top. Same fuel.
Great how to video
Thank you
Almost forgot, HAPPY THANKSGIVING! to you and your family!
Thank you! You have a happy Thanksgiving as well!
GOD BLESS and hold tight. Great demo recutting is lesson hopefully only needed once. The old fashioned chimney sweeps would brush it out from the bottom up, hence the stereotypical black clothes and dirty faces. I have a friend who drops a log chain down his pipe once a week. I might recommend a fishing style of perhaps a fitting to the brush and a dog chain. Just drop the chain[ rope. wire, cable, etc.] down and pull it through. Of course a vacuum is recommended. Thanks for the advice, I have never pulled a fuel oil carb apart before.
Thank you. Yeah a chimney cleaning is dirty no matter how you do it .
Awesome Chad I've been busy hunting for deer the last few weeks 😌
Great instruction video on fuel oil on heaterI save that to my watch videos and just in the nick of time I see from the weather you guys are getting ready to have. God bless Y'all and much peace and love from northeast Texas 🤠✌️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you Roger! Any luck out there?
You know about so many things. You keep impressing me.
I didn’t know about it until I dove into it. 😆 Luckily it wasn’t too bad
Can't get much simpler than that. Perfect set up for off grid. My buddy has one in his camp and it works quite well. You can find these pretty cheap if you look around. Will be putting one in my off grid cabin.
Looks good. Never seen a carb lily that one before. Pretty neat.
Glad you'll all be cozy this winter. Cabin looks great -carpet will be warm. Years and years ago we had an oil burner in the basement
I totally forgot that! replaced it with a wood stove to burn free wood from the bush on our farm. How are the chickens?
Chickens are doing great! Not laying eggs much anymore but we did find some under the cabin.. 😆
Very interesting...thanks for sharing this with us. Glad it's working for you guys. Have a wonderful day and blessings my friends 💞🤗
Thank you Mary. Have a great night
great video. i learned something new thank you
Thank you Thomas
Thanks for the advice about turning the wood blade backwards, I'd never heard about that before.
Also good video, glad to see that your getting closer to having a place to stay warm over the winter.
No problem. And thank you.

Fuel oil going to be big bucks this winter
Thank you resident Biden!
That's why wood pellet stoves are better $250 for a ton last me 2 1/2 months
Average cost for the complete winner $650
Yes we heard this. We’re stocking up.
Ya learn something new everyday, good job, thanks for sharing.
Thank you Edward
Great video, nicely done. 💚👍👍🔥
Thank you
Regarding water control, You can install a drip leg with a valve and clean out plug.
Nicely done, Chad. Btw, is there a diesel smell at all ? 😎
Thank you. No smell at all.
Used a pellet stove in our Off-Grid build. Works great ao farm. Glad you've got heat too.
Educational!
