You have 3 coins, p q and r. There are 2 possible outcomes for each coin so there's a total of 2^3 = 8 possible outcomes, only one of which is all tails. So the odds of Gavin winning are 7/8
You are only flipping one coin.
boethiah12 I worded that part a bit off, but the logic is still the same, p, q and r being the three different occurrences of flipping the coin.
each instance in this case though is completely separate. so you flip one single coin and get what you want or fail the flip. the two remaining flips are a different instance with the same odds as the first. nothing carries over. your odds on each flip will always remain the same.
The chance of each individual flip is 50% heads and 50% tails. Let's call heads 'false' and tails 'true', and look at the resultant truth table.

The probability is just how many favorable possible outcomes out of the total possible outcomes. If you toss the coin three times, then on all three tosses, you have two possible outcomes, which gives you 2^3 (8) total outcomes of HHH, HHT, HTH, THH, HTT, THT, TTH, and TTT. If for the sake of simplicity we assume that Heads is the favorable outcome and you only need to get it once in the three flips, then the only unfavorable outcome is all tails, giving you a 7/8 chance of a favorable outcome (87.5%)
