It is true what she says, that the audience checks itself in the Box Hill Miss Bates scene. We as an audience cringe hard, but not exclusively due to second hand embarassment, also because everybody can remember a moment where they weren't nice and hurt someone and regretted it instantly. And maybe sometimes we catch ourselves thinking disparagingly about someone, just like Emma.

Simon Mayo is such a good interviewer. That is clear from his Radio 5 days. Anja Taylor-Joy seems a particularly intelligent actress. I noticed her accent started to slip though. Emma's a great book, but I suspect this film is not the best.

I thought she had an American accent but I guess she flips constantly in interviews

She's admitted that her accent changes to whoever she's talking to so you're right.

She was born in America, raised in Argentina, then England, and now America again. Accents are weird like that if you constantly move around your whole life.

@@DuncanUdaho67 I think You mean that she was born in the US. We, sudacas, are taugh the America is a continent, not a country.

I think the comment at the picnic is really nasty - the idea words can't hurt is bunk. I guess when I was younger I was on the recieving end of comments like that and yeah they hurt and I wasn't dependent on people like Miss Bates was.
