    Super video! Just got back from a weekend in Dartmoor with my Dad. Found the ones listed on the OS map, some in pubs/cafes and one hidden under a rock … one of the Polo Bear boxes. We were last there in 2020 finding some on a charity walk. Although frustrating not to find more this weekend, it was great to get some and start building up my collection of stamps! Hope to be back before long to get some more! If you see The Four Bears from Hampshire, that’s me! ☺️ 🐻🐻🐻🐻

    Thanks for documenting this project and this hobby. I started my letterboxing life during a trip to Dartmoor in 2008. One day, I dream of returning.

    Nice watch - used to letterbox a bit while training for Ten Tors back in the mid-80's. Now I have kids of my own I will try and bring them to the moor this summer to show them what Dad used to spend his weekends doing.

    I had great fun letterboxing when I lived in Devon in 1995. Great to see that you are keeping this lovely tradition alive. My favourite boxes were the ones with handmade rubber stamps.

      Thanks for the interest. Can't take much credit for keeping it alive, that goes to those who put in a ton of time and effort so that others can enjoy themselves, and those maintaining the catalogue.
      What was it like in the 90s? You're right about the rubber cuts being the prize of any collection.

      @@Rat.Boy.with.a.Movie.Camera. I can’t remember exactly how I found out about Letterboxing. I think it was from a local interest book in the bookshop - 101 Dartmoor Letterboxes (but not how to find them) - (I think that was what it was called!). I definitely never saw a catalogue. As I cycled round Dartmoor sketching, I got used to spotting the signs of a box location and found them quite regularly. Being an artist, I got very into the idea of creating my own personal stamps to print into the log books and made lots of different ones. I have lots of great memories of those days and have been planning on making a letterboxing-themed video for a while now. My son has got into Geocaching over the last couple of years and has made a trail of different locally-themed geocaches, including (influenced by my happy memories of letterboxing) homemade rubber stamps!

      I'm sure the letterboxing community would be very glad to see it, myself included!

    Great video! I’m thinking of getting into letterboxing on the moor myself, something to switch up the standard walk! I saw your episode on the Dartmoor Podcast and it got me really interested

    What a delightful video! I've been letterboxing for over 20 years, but more of the non-Dartmoor variety. I'm one of those Americans so Dartmoor is a bit out of my way, but I did get a chance to tromp around there once and hit up one of the clock-change meetups. Definitely a lot of fun!

      @@Rat.Boy.with.a.Movie.Camera. It started taking off in America after the Smithsonian magazine published an article about the Dartmoor boxes in 1998. You can learn more about it from our own little gathering when Wassamatta_u described the History of Letterboxing in detail at th-cam.com/video/PMmb1S_X_t0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tsXH3S4aBMiB7DpB -- including when it jumped over the pond. I'll admit, there may be a few inaccuracies, but most of them are pretty obvious. ;o)

    Enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. I picked up a stamp book after seeing your video with the Dartmoor Podcast. I still think I wouldn't mind going on some sort of intro walk, just to watch over someone's shoulder, so I can then go off on my own adventures. Do such walks exist?

    • @Rat.Boy.with.a.Movie.Camera.
      @Rat.Boy.with.a.Movie.Camera.  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's great! It was George's video that spurred me on to finish this project. As for intro walks, I wouldn't be surprised if they've been put on before, but none currently to my knowledge. Maybe somebody should change that. Try casting your line in one of the 2 Facebook groups (search Dartmoor Letterboxing). It's a really friendly community and you wouldn't be short of offers.
