Yes, it looks like a bug. They didn't account for en passant, which is the only move where the capturer ends up in a different position from the captured
It's clear this variant was not well thought out. The horizontal pawns was meant to help them navigate the stone board but it just breaks the game entirely.
Pawns are literally the best piece in this variation. I actually think that's what they were going for. Otherwise they would let king capture to get out of cheeky pawn checks
that pawn side move left me :O . it was hilarious to think about just blocking and attacking by moving pawns sideways. pawns should be worth 2 instead of 2 just cause of that move lmao
So on top of being complex, it seems like there are some bugs as well 😅 You really dominated by maximally using the pawns, especially their sideways move though. Very well played!

4:46 the clock goes from 1 minute 3 seconds to 25 seconds and 0 minutes And almost everything is petrified, this is the first time I realize this so either he did it often or this is the first time, now I have to rewatch every video
He often pauses or skips long pauses for entertainment purposes. However everything petrified is probably the way to show the opponent resigned (maybe all their pieces get added to your score?)
@@DidierLoiseau I know that, It's been like year and a half that I follow him And while the "everything petrifies after resign" sounds about right, there are also some moves played and it's confirmed by the clock, but the problem is that this is the very first time I realize about it XD, but there are a heck ton of videos of the opponent resigning I wouldn't say entertainment purposes more like "I don't really care so I'll end it here" purposes XD
If you look at the move log on the right side, you can see that all that was skipped was the opponent capturing on c2 and then Simp developing his knight. Maybe the opponent took so long to make a move after that that the game auto-forfeited?
I cant blame the opponent for resigning. Being blocked multiple times by side pawn moved and an en passant that froze his piece instead of yours is probably what makes this variant so unpopular.
it seems like the strat should be to just sacrifice all of your pieces. If your opponent can't capture any of your pieces they can get at most 8 points + whatever the king is worth, so if you sac your queen for a rook, your rooks for minor pieces, and minor pieces for pawns, it shouldn't be possible for your opponent to catch up
Often, a king is worth a game-winning number of points in these kinds of variants. I wouldn't be surprised if the point-based victory is purely to stop every endgame from ending in a draw from the 50 move rule. So if you sacrifice all your pieces ASAP, then the opponent could just take your king and win the game.
0:21 | The first Hogwarts book also had Hermione use that same spell on Neville Longbottom. 2:20 | I had to go back and reread the rules after seeing that horizontal Pawn move. That's _cursed._
There probably is no official 'check' in this variant and instead you have to capture the opponent's king. It's probably then worth an absurd number of points when you capture it, so you're guaranteed to win. The points are probably just to stop endgames from becoming draws by the 50 move rule or from all pieces being petrified.
this mode made no sense, other modes you can feel why the rules are the way that they are for balancing reasons, but this mode just feels like a cluster of ideas put together for no reason at all
I'm guessing that the points system is because they don't expect a checkmate to happen with so many impregnable stone walls, and the pawn moving sideways is to avoid games being over too fast when they hit a wall, but then players become confused about what's they're supposed to be going for, making chess just a "don't lose pieces" game is boring
I didn't understand... If it's point based then when does the game end? Also, why does it say "win by checkmate or stalemate" on the right of the screen?
What's the point of the points, if the rules say "win by checkmate or stalemate" ? Either that sentence is not true, or what is the situation when the points come into consideration?
If the game would end in a Draw, the player with the most points wins instead. Mate "only" gives 20 points, so you can "Claim Victory" if you have an advantage of at least 21 points (you "resign", giv your opponent 20 points, then still win).
