Thanks so much for this one.. I'm so glad you saw the video.. very evocative.. and such a beautiful song... (note reference to Beale street and Rev. Al Green) always enjoy your reactions (and also appreciate the variety you react to!...)
When he mentioned "The Hollywood", he is talking about a restaurant in Robinsonville, Mississippi! They've got the best fried dill pickles anywhere! I live about 20 minutes away from there and about 30 miles from Memphis! If you visit Memphis, you must go to The Pyramid where the Bass Pro Shop is. It's right on the Mississippi River!
Been twice to Graceland, and seen Elvis twice in concert, I will never get over him. I have heard this song before, and it is really beautiful. thanks guys.
You were asking about the plaque at Sun Records. Sun Records in Memphis signed to their first professional record release. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and if I'm not mistaken The Everley Brothers. It's known as a rock & roll landmark, hence the plaque.
When Marc talks about Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood he is talking about the Hollywood Cafe in Robinsonville Mississippi. I have been there 4 times and it is great. A little tiny cafe on the Blues Trail. Pictures of Mark and Muriel in the place. Great fried pickles and catfish. Does not get any better than that. Brilliant song and brilliant record! Saw him here in Petaluma CA at a small club. Kicked ass and took names! Take the time and get to Memphis and then head south along the blues trail you will not regret it!
I walked on Beale st before this song came out Empty streets when I was there Except for 1 blues band maybe 15-20 people but a cool little side trip for me Graceland and Beale St I did not know Mr Cohn was from Beachwood Me and the wife just went through from Canton to the lake, Erie of course, west to east
If you're in a certain state of mind this song can hit you right in the feels. Usually if it comes on in the supermarket while you're shuffling up the aisle, hating your own life.
This makes me cry, every time - and I'm a Buddhist! Marc Cohn's (surprisingly difficult to play - for me) arpeggiated bluesy piano is just sublime, his voice hits me hard, the lyrics and wonderful and the whole composition is a masterpiece. Every so often you come across a rock classic which transcends time and this is one of my favourites. Cher's cover is fabulous too. There was a mashup somebody did between the two versions (frequency shifting Cher's voice down I think) which is jaw dropping - I just wish the two of them had sung this as a duet.
I believe that there is an interesting backstory regarding writer's block on this song. Although when he was able to overcome that issue Mr. Cohn done real good. Perfect lyrics, perfect melody and perfect delivery. He took us to church with the choir too. 🙏⛪ Love your reaction
My son was born at Danny Thomas hospital. He was a premi. They did wonders with him. While walking around Memphis waiting for my turn to see my young man I enjoyed the streets of Beale. Loved it@
In the beginning he mentions putting on his blue suede shoes. He was paying homage to Elvis’s song “Blue Suede Shoes”. He references Elvis a few times in the song.
All of the singer songwriters from Memphis are what he's talking about. Elvis Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and many more. The video shows the "Sun Record" company where Elvis and Johnny Cash, and Eddie Cochran recorded Rock and ZZRoll's first songs. Historic stuff.
Beale Street on a saturday night goes off like a frog in a sock. Everyone owes it to themselves to have a lost night on Beale at least once in their life
Stayed in a hotel room overlooking Beale on a St. Patty's day...they hosed it down early that morning. I told my wife look, Beale street makes it's own gravy.
Spent a week in Memphis on business. Things to do.... nighttime. Music bars along the river. Bowling is very popular. Some bars by the airport are open 24/7. And of course, Elvis Presley Blvd.
This song hits me hard. Back in 1992 at the El Toro air show there was a plane crash. They played this song over the crowd as they figured out what happened. Has a special meaning to me
This is one of my favorite songs! So much feeling and emotion in it- and when the choir comes in towards the end... it’s like I’m at church- and I’m not even religious!
Love this song. A lot of references, starting from WC Handy who wrote many songs including That’s All Right Mama; which was the first song Elvis recorded
just for 'clarification' to you...W.C. Handy wrote Memphis Blues, St Louis Blues, and some other similar songs, maybe 1920's?........'that's alright mama' was written in 1954(arthur crudup) and was Elvis' 1st recorded single.
Absolutely love this song. There were a few times I visited Memphis just as this song came out and was shooting up the charts. It really puts you right on Beale St. and B.B. King's place. Sun Records had not just Elvis, but also Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis (the Killer), and several other legendary true Rock & Roll stars when they were first starting out. Marc Cohn is definitely underrated which is a real shame. Now I have to try and find my cassette of this album. BTW: If you do go, don't worry too much about going to Grace Land. It's become more of a tourist trap than anything.
Elvis and a lot of the greats of 20th century rock and roll and pop music recorded at SUN records. It was an institution as a recording studio back then.
What I like to do, have an Old Fashioned at the bar in the Peabody Hotel, watching the Peabody ducks waddle to, or from, the lobby fountain... then walk down the alley across the street to Rendezvous BBQ for some Memphis style ribs.... Then hit some blues bars on Beale....
...we lived about 10 miles northeast of downtown Memphis(Lakeland), passed by Graceland maybe 500 times over the years(now live about 100 miles east)...never toured Graceland. on 8/16/1977 I was working phones for dispatch office of Memphis Fire Dept, we got a call early afternoon(?)asking for an ambulance stat for Graceland, by the call we suspected it was SERIOUS(we knew Elvis was in town)...within 4 hrs we were getting calls from around the world...sad day!
In the mid 50s my third grade teacher's husband had a pair of "blue suede shoes". Every time he visited the classroom he wore them because he knew we got a kick out of them.🇺🇸
One of my all-time favorite songs. Being a lover of blues since I was a little kid (and being a white suburban Jew at that), this song resonates big time. Masterpiece.
I'm from Memphis, left when I married in 1984. Memphis in May BBQ. Memphis is known for its BBQ. I grew up in Graceland subdivision, about a mile from Elvis's Graceland house, in the 70s. It was a different time. I took a couple of riverboat rides. If you want to hear the blues music, go to Beale Street. There is also Mud Island. I remember driving into Mississippi with my momma. We went to an elderly lady's farm house. We bought fresh eggs from her, she grew peanuts, and had a quilting loom that hung from the ceiling where she made quilts, standing up. I remember to this day, living the old country life.
Marc suffered a bullet wound in his head after a car jacking that went wrong , thankfully it wasnt serious and is still making music , this song won him a grammy award and Cher covered it also
He must have been walking in Memphis a long time ago. Nowadays if you are on Beal Street you're safe in a 1 block area,or it was in1995. Even back then if you set one foot 1 block away from Beale Street you're going to get robbed or worse. Very dangerous place. Memphis.
Used to love to go to Memphis back in the day. My late wife and I renewed out wedding vows there along with 2500 other couples at a event back in the early 90's. We were just there for a weekend getaway and stumbled on this wedding event. I rarely remembered this but now that my wife is gone, I remember that weekend fondly. Crime wasn't quite so bad then as it is there now. It's a shame because Beale street used to be a blast! Downtown is probably still OK but I wouldn't drift out more that a block or two unless you live there and know the danger areas to avoid.
This original version by Marc Cohn is amazing and he has a great singing voice. As an Elvis fan I've been to Memphis 3 times so far and I had this song going through my head while I was walking on Beale Street 😊 You should also listen to Cher's version of this as it's great as well and she actually dresses like Elvis in the video. Sun Studios (aka The Memphis Recording Studios) is where Elvis started out. It's where he recorded his first record and a few other hits after that as well. By-the-way, the Jungle Room isn't in the basement of Graceland; it's on the ground floor and Elvis actually recorded a whole album in there in the 70s.
The “jungle room” was known by Elvis and his crew as “the den,” and was not in the basement. It is on the first floor, just off the kitchen, just like anyone else’s family room.
Just an epic song. This is one of the few instant classics that came out of that era of music. EDIT: Memphis used to be awesome. Now you're lucky if you don't get robbed, car jacked, or shot.
Chicken &waffles I think Elvis favorite sandwich was toasted bread w peanut butter and bacon gotta b toasted so the lb gets all melted n creamy, its good😉
Thanks so much for this one.. I'm so glad you saw the video.. very evocative.. and such a beautiful song... (note reference to Beale street and Rev. Al Green) always enjoy your reactions (and also appreciate the variety you react to!...)

Funny. This is his biggest song but it’s the only song from the album I know. His album Rainy Season is just impeccable.
I believe that there is an interesting backstory regarding writer's block on this song. Although when he was able to overcome that issue Mr. Cohn done real good. Perfect lyrics, perfect melody and perfect delivery. He took us to church with the choir too. 🙏⛪ Love your reaction

Cooper-Young is a fantastic district in midtown Memphis - lots to eat, drink, and hear
Rum Boogie Club has some great ribs, no joke!
Beale Street on a saturday night goes off like a frog in a sock. Everyone owes it to themselves to have a lost night on Beale at least once in their life
Not a frog in a sock! 😂 I’ve never heard that expression before but I’m for sure gonna add it to my lexicon.
I wish I could
Let’s not forget the Overton Square. That’s a pretty cool place too
Stayed in a hotel room overlooking Beale on a St. Patty's day...they hosed it down early that morning. I told my wife look, Beale street makes it's own gravy.
I don't think that Beale Street was that fun, but there was a lot of people out to have fun
Rev Green will be glad to see you- the legendary Al Green, 'Let's stay together. '
Sun Studios is where Elvis, and many other soul singers, recorded their early stuff. A legendary rock & roll location.
BBQ, BBQ, and BBQ. But I had the catfish and wasn't disappointed.
Mission BBQ in Memphis, really good! Get there early or you'll be in line forever lol
Spent a week in Memphis on business. Things to do.... nighttime. Music bars along the river. Bowling is very popular. Some bars by the airport are open 24/7. And of course, Elvis Presley Blvd.
My father's Oldsmobile is such a great song of his
This song hits me hard. Back in 1992 at the El Toro air show there was a plane crash. They played this song over the crowd as they figured out what happened. Has a special meaning to me
So good ...
His tune "She's Becoming Gold" hits similarly .
Rainy Season is a fantastic album.
beautiful song
Another artist who, to me, has that Memphis Delta Blues sound is Chris Isaak. You reacted to his Wicked Game already and should do Blue Hotel next.
Been to Memphis and walked thru Grasceland. Boy, was it a great experience.
This is one of my favorite songs! So much feeling and emotion in it- and when the choir comes in towards the end... it’s like I’m at church- and I’m not even religious!

@@leroyleach7581 thanks. I knew that but it slipped my mind when I was replying. Oops.
I have been to Memphis a couple of times. Beale street and Graceland are really cool.
Silver Thunderbird is maybe my favorite Cohn song. He puts on a good show...seen him several times.
Ribs and catfish are da bomb in Memphis.
Well, I heard that Elvis liked to have Fried Peanut and Banana sandwich with a strawberry milkshake at the Arcade restaurant
BBQ at the "RENDEZVOUS" off of Beale St....
Absolutely love this song. There were a few times I visited Memphis just as this song came out and was shooting up the charts. It really puts you right on Beale St. and B.B. King's place. I feel like Marc Cohn is very underrated, you'll have to check out his other songs, Silver Thunderbird, Ghost Train and Paper Walls
That whole album is amazing!
Elvis and a lot of the greats of 20th century rock and roll and pop music recorded at SUN records. It was an institution as a recording studio back then.
This is one of my top 10 fave songs of all time. 🥰
Pork BBQ, Fried Catfish, Southern Fried Chicken
His verse, “Man I am Tonight”! Is sooo powerful.
.........just for 'clarity'....he was answering back to the lady...'Ma'am I am tonight'
Barbeque is great in Memphis
Sun records is a famous early record level. Elvis did record his early stuff with them.
As soon as I saw this title come up on my YT feed, I had to watch. I looove this song.... one of my top songs in my life.......
Marc was actually shot in the head during a car jacking attempt. He survived and is still performing
I saw on snl when Pete Davidson did his parody Walking in Staten

check out silver thunderbird as well, its excellent
In the mid 50s my third grade teacher's husband had a pair of "blue suede shoes". Every time he visited the classroom he wore them because he knew we got a kick out of them.🇺🇸
Now you should listen to Dig Down Deep by this songwriter singer. Awesome
This song is a true story he told it in an interview 👍
I love the symbolism of songs like this "do I really feel the way I feel?".
should listen to the "Dance Remix" it is a real banger of a tune.
Gives my goosebumps the goosebumps ❤
“Mam I am tonight is my favorite line 🥰
Mine too! It was running through my head a few days ago. Not sure how it popped into my head... I have a weird DJ that lives in my brain, I guess.
True Companion is my favorite Marc Cohn song
Love this song! One of my absolute favourites!!!
"Silver Thunderbird" Check it out!🇺🇸
One of my all-time favorite songs. Being a lover of blues since I was a little kid (and being a white suburban Jew at that), this song resonates big time. Masterpiece.
So I'm a pretty stoic person and it takes a lot to bring tears but music can certainly do it and this is one of those songs.
Got to listen to his “Silver Thunderbird”
My hometown!
Somehow I was unsubbed from ya"!!
Great Tune to return on
Peace!
Cher did an outstanding cover of this song but nothing beats the original.
As did Lonestar
Yes, Souxsie. Elvis’ career started at Sun Records. That building. Something that you probably noticed read, Memphis Recording Service
"Ma'am I am tonight!"

Have loved this song from the first time I heard it (when it was first released), and still listen to it regularly!
He must have been walking in Memphis a long time ago.
Nowadays if you are on Beal Street you're safe in a 1 block area,or it was in1995.
Even back then if you set one foot 1 block away from Beale Street you're going to get robbed or worse. Very dangerous place. Memphis.
Rubbish
Sun studios is where Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis all first recorded
Such a beautiful song
Just look what all Elvis has inspired in the world of music, and in the world overall, for that matter.
This song was all over top 40 radio when I was in elementary school!
Elvis, Carl Perkins (Blue Suede Shoes), Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash all recorded at Sun. It’s a legendary studio.
The Reverend Green is singer Al Green

This is a great old song but a song a lot of people sing well its just one of them great songs
Forgot how amazing this song was
LOVED this song when nit came out! Thanks!
Love this song!! Suze, if you love his voice you should check out "Silver Thunderbird" too. Brilliant singer/songwriter.
This is actually a true story of his life(so he said)Muriel existed and when he married he flew her in for his wedding
been there! it was pretty good alright!!!
Elvis cut his first recording and was discovered at Sun Studios
Pride of Northeast Ohio.👍
The place you said about Suzy was where Elvis recorded his first songs...My happiness and That's alright. Good catch...this is a great song.
He has a lot of great songs, and I think he won best new artist the year this song came out. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
My favorite part of Memphis, not going there. Very dangerous !
Baby Back Ribs ! Wet or Dry Rub.
The top 3 meals in Memphis are
1. dry BBQ ribs,
2. Wet BBQ ribs and
3. both
Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis started to record here, at SUN records !!!
Absolutely love this song. There were a few times I visited Memphis just as this song came out and was shooting up the charts. It really puts you right on Beale St. and B.B. King's place. Sun Records. Honestly, rock and roll would exist today without 'em.
Tiny little Sun Records is where Elvis started his career... And made it big.
Just an epic song. This is one of the few instant classics that came out of that era of music.
EDIT: Memphis used to be awesome. Now you're lucky if you don't get robbed, car jacked, or shot.
Silver Thunderbird
Ghost Train
29 Ways
True Companion
Rest for the Weary
The Things We've Handed Down
All solid gold...
Cat Fish!
