    Ash in the original Evil Dead is very much like Ripley in Alien where they are both like characters that survive at the end and you want them to be the last alive. Then in the sequels Aliens and Evil Dead 2 they become some of the most badass characters in film.

    • @LeonGun8

      Pretty much. the Ash people truly remember is the one from the entire franchise. In a vacuum he's not at all badass in the first one.

      I was Just thinking the same thing. In Alien, it's not obvious that Ripley will be the sole survivor. If you go into it blind you have no idea who will live or die and it was made before the "final girl" cliché. In the sequel, she becomes more badass and she has extremely bad luck throughout the films....
      Ash is the same. In The Evil Dead, he's hardly the obvious hero but he survives. In the sequel, he becomes more badass and he has extremely bad luck.

      JaxBlade For real! Or how about that part when Mia's knee was slowly being cut by the machete? It when she tore her arm off? Or got raped by thorns? Seriously, there are plenty of painful moments in the remake that Doug didn't point out.

    The New Evil Dead DOES NOT have a happy ending. Think about it. Mia loses her friends, her brother, and her arm. And because no one in their right mind will believe her story, she won't get the therapy she'll definitely need and with no family or friends for emotional support, she'll probably end up on drugs again. Just saying.

    • @allankatsuro1142
      @allankatsuro1142 7 ปีที่แล้ว +135

      Well, as far as horror movies with "happy" endings go, that's common. Mostly because she makes it out alive. The aftermath that one could imagine following the events in this movie (lack of therapy, going to drugs, etc) would however be the less happy part. But yeah, as I said, for the purpose of the movie itself, it's technically a happy ending.

      Well, I did read this one fanfic that suggested she went to therapy... but then it turns out that the therapist got possessed and she and Ash (who's also in thearapy) have to take him out. They then decide the best therapy is hunting demons.

      +Allan Katsuro I guess it's a matter of perspective. For example, in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while the Final Girl did escape, our last image is of Leatherface twirling around his chainsaw almost like in celebration. It's almost as if to say, did she actually win? Sure she made it out, but she'll never be the same and probably not in a good way. Then in the sequel, we find out she went into a catatonic state. Not a big fan of that being her fate, but you see where I'm going with this right?
      Or perhaps a better example would be the Nightmare on Elm Street sequel. Yes, Nancy and Quinton did survive, but in the end, Freddy got the last laugh when he killed Nancy's mom.

    • @animeotaku307
      @animeotaku307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yeah. If you want to read it, the fic is called "And the Wisdom to Know the Difference" by Missy and is on AO3. There's a decent amount of gore and the characters work off each other fairly well even if the story isn't too long.

    Fun fact: the filmmaker behind the remake, while liking the movie he did, fully read all the criticisms people had against the movie. With this, he specifically made his next movie as a "reaction" to the evil dead remake, and made sure to make this new movie the exact opposite of evil dead 2013: it would be an original story, with no supernatural elements, and a more realistic and grounded tone. This new movie would end up being the 2016 horror movie, Don't Breathe, which I hear is really good and a lot of people like.

    I have to disagree with the verdict on Ashley vs Mia. Mia is great in her own way, but while she's an interesting character and boy does her actress show the full range of her character in Evil Dead, I don't find Mia that relateable and I found her performance more enjoyable than actually scary.
    Ashley is just "some guy" who ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong friends, but that's why I like him and feel more sympathy with him than I do Mia. He's naive, inept and cowardly, pretty much exactly what I would be if I was trapped in a cabin with undead monsters. He doesn't need a backstory to make him relateable or keep your attention, the simplicity of an ordinary man having to fight off evil incarnate by himself armed with just a gun and household items is enough to give me a real sense of claustrophobia, and he didn't need any one-liners or gimmicks to make that happen.
    Evil Dead 2 is still the best of the trilogy in my opinion, but I have a place in my heart for Ashley as well as Ash and Mia.

      Not to mention the scene of him trying to reassure Scott, his last remaining friend, only to realize that he's died, is one of the most heartbreaking moments I've seen in a horror movie.

    • @phousefilms
      @phousefilms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We can all agree that there's not a lot of depth in the characters of "The Evil Dead"original. Ash is the romantic guy, Scott is the jerk jock type, Cheryl is the weirdo and most of the characters are not given much focus before they get mulched, beheaded or melted, etc;
      However, I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name of a single person from the remake. Only Mia, and thats because NC says her name a few times here. I only remember them as "the girl who cuts her face off", "the Hippy Guy"or "Diet Cheryl who is also an addict". I know that Sam Raimi is all about over the top gore, but here, I don't know why, it feels....I don't know...overly excessive? And while the original "Evil Dead"is pretty low budget, I think it's pretty fantastic despite that.

      Yeah, the whole, either or, choice sucks. I really do like them both, because they showcase the era they came out in, and the massively different budgets.
      The old one is a testament to cheaply making a good movie, with whatever money(and time) you could scrape up.
      While the new one, shows modern horror filmmaking at its best. With a good sized budget, they were able to mix practical and CGI effects pretty nicely, and it didn’t detract from The story.

      In fairness, the remake implies that the book had a similar draw to it as the one ring in lord of the rings, subtly encouraging the ones who had the book to read it out loud. And if you don't know you're in a horror film, you probably wouldn't think reading it out loud would be a big deal, since in the real world there's no good evidence for demons or anything else super natural.

As if the camera was the demon and when it flips shit throughout the forest in these fast shaky feeling motions, you felt the rush as you got closer, and pulled back. One thing I thought the remake vastly improved from the original that isn't really mentioned in this review is the parallel between the deadites and the protagonist's 'inner' demon - her addiction to drugs. That's why she has to fight the Abomination in the end, who insults Mia by calling her a 'pathetic junkie'. That's why the first deadite we see after the intro is portrayed by the same actor as Mia. The demons aren't only literal demons from hell, but the demons to be found within - such as a serious drug addiction, which changes you as a person and makes you harmful to yourself and your loved ones.

    • @emelylucerne2175
      @emelylucerne2175 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well it apparently wasn't obvious enough for NC, who can't figure out what the purpose of the final demon is, and therefore missed the main theme of the movie - addiction/self-harm and recovery. I love the first and I wouldn't say the remake is 'better', but it offers some deeper layers to the protagonist and her conflict, while the characters in the original Evil Dead were basically cardboard. .

    While I agree with pretty much every point, I DO have to point out one small flaw in the Atmosphere argument... the atmosphere for the remake was INTENDED to be the serious slasher that most fans agree the original was trying to shoot for, but simply went too far to create. While the atmosphere for the original is clearly the winner, I think it's unfair to label it as just another horror flick, because that was the point... to remake an accidentally hilarious horror film into a serious horror film. In that respect, it succeeded quite well.
    Still... yeah, the original was better than the remake. The remake WAS pretty damn good, but you can't beat the original.

    • @NefariousDreary
      @NefariousDreary 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Squeaking Lion I don't see at all how it went too far. I think it hit exactly what it needed to hit. It accomplished what the original failed to be which was a melodramatic horror and did an excellent job at it. I consider the remake to be just as good as the original.

    On the special edition of the evil dead DVD, Bruce Campbell said at the end of the film Sam Raimi wanted everything in the film to die. Hence why when the credits end in the original the upbeat music ends up dying and ends with the eerie wind and insects noise that began the movie. The original definitely had a feeling of complete and utter doom.

      True, that's a totally reasonable explanation but Chechov's gun. A "good" movie wouldn't randomly show something that eye-catching if it didn't have anything to do with the story. How I see it, it gives the scene more history. That hillbilly family has gone this before and the father might have approached them seeking help, maybe to banish the demon that possessed his daughter. It's also an element that makes the viewers believe why the father might have trusted this kinda scary family in the first place, because we can clearly see those are burn scars. But a movie has several different interpretations, just my thought

The gore is something that even r rated Hollywood horror movies haven't really done. Fede Alverez and the cinematographers worked their asses off with the way the movie was shot and the way the gore was handled, and to just downplay it like the critic did was very dissapointing.

    I think what really makes something great is if it stays with people, and makes an impact on them. Look at us still talking about the original almost 40 years later. That's how much of an impact it made on us. Its only been 4 years, and I don't really see many people talking about the remake. So I think that, even though people might of liked the new one, the original is the better movie. Oh, and Ash is an icon( Something that it seems Mia will never be).

      Oh there are PLENTY of people still talking about Evil Dead 2013 all over the internet. People keep asking for a sequel to happen (Or Mia to appear in Ash vs Evil Dead). Most consider it the best horror remake out there and plenty (including me) consider it one of the greatest horror films of this generation.
      Personally i think its a much better movie than the originals. Also the 2013 Evil Dead's popularity just keeps growing as years pass. Just like with the original. In 10-15 or so years 2013 Evil Dead will most probably be considered a classic.
      Oh and Mia has started to develop her own fan base (people have been dressing as Mia in conventions , getting Mia tattoos)

      Evil Dead was them with a budget of 5 dollars and a case of beer trying to make the scariest, shocking-est movie they could. In many respects it was, but over time, people pointed out how comical and funny it was. So they remade it in Evil Dead 2, but with the horror-comedy angle and a budget of 10 dollars and a keg. This was so successful that they made Army of Darkness and almost dropped all the horror for just the comedy.
