Walk With Us | Aviator Harness Training Progress- Session 40

  • Taki has been doing incredibly well with his harness training. Recently, we have been able to take him on errands using only head scritches as reinforcement and his favorite toy to keep him entertained. I think we can finally consider him perfectly used to wearing the harness!
    As stated in a pervious video description, it took us roughly 8 ten minute harness training sessions to get Taki used to seeing the harness, touching the harness, and putting it on. Some birds will take less time, some will take considerably more time. After Taki was comfortable putting the harness completely on, we did roughly 4 three to five minute "outings" in the backyard to get him used to being outside. Taki spooks easily and was very wary of being outdoors at first, which is why we went for short sessions outdoors with the harness instead of diving straight in to a full walk. You can watch his first full walk here - • Taki's First Walk | Av...
    After the short sessions in the backyard, we started practicing going on short 8-12 minute walks around the block. After 10-15 sessions, he was ready to start going to a nearby park for slightly longer sessions (around 20-25 minutes round trip).
    We continually and slowly worked up the amount of time he'll be comfortable being outside until we were able to have him outside for over an hour at the park, not including the time it took to drive there and back (about 30 minutes total).
    Taki still does much better wearing his harness indoors (such as in shops when we run errands) for long periods of time than he does wearing it outdoors for long periods of time (such as at the park). At the moment, we can have him outdoors in the harness for around an hour before he starts getting uncomfortable being outside. If we're running errands, he so far has been perfectly comfortable being in indoor shops wearing his harness for as long as 4 hours with zero signs of discomfort. He seems to have adjusted to the harness itself but is still occasionally spooked by the outdoors, at which point we bring him inside the car and he returns to a state of calm.
    Tip: Bring water, food, treats, paper towels, a backup carrier, and toys with you when you go on outings with your bird. You can use the carrier to "store" these items until needed. Birds need to eat and drink frequently so please offer food and water every 30 minutes to an hour to ensure your bird doesn't go hungry or get dehydrated while you're out.
    Here we are spending an afternoon in the park with our 15 year old Beagle, Banjo, and Taki. They had a really great time, and Taki was treated to lots of millet and a shower when we got home. To learn how to harness train your bird correctly, check out the following playlist and videos:

    Taki is our 8 month old Lutino cockatiel. He is most likely a "she" but we call him a "he" anyways. His wings are uneven because of a botched clip job he had before we got him. Our avian vet has suggested letting them molt out and regrow. He will be fully flighted afterward.

      Lots of positive reinforcement training and redirecting! I ignore bad behavior or distract from bad behavior (if I'm ony my computer and he's chewing on the keys I give him a toy to play with instead, for instance. If he's screaming for attention I ignore and then give praise when he stops screaming.) To get him to do good things I do positive reinforcement training :)! You can see a video of how I harness trained him on my channel.

    What happens if it flies away? Will it pull it back

    • @takithetiel6854
      @takithetiel6854  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all 😊 The Aviator Harness is intended for flight! Since the lead is elastic it won't jerk your bird back when they reach the end- instead it begins to slowly stretch until the flight direction if the bird is changed to being circular. But it doesn't hurt the bird or "snap back" in any way- it's very comfortable. You can also purchase a "flight line" that adds length to the elastic lead. That allows your bird to fly up to an extra 80 feet before reaching the end of the lead.

    Can she fly whit it

    • @takithetiel6854
      @takithetiel6854  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes 😊 That's actually a large piece of the reason why teaching my bird to wear a harness was important to me! The Aviator Harness allows your bird to safely fly outdoors without the risk of being blown away accidentally by a gust of wind.
