- To celebrate the end of my Top 85 Games For The BBC Micro countdown series, I decided to commission an original piece of music from the incredibly talented Nicole Marie T and use it as the basis for a video that captures the spirit of the series as a whole. What follows is a video that zooms through the full eighty five games I selected for my countdown, from the very first entry to the final number one spot, all set to the backdrop of Nicole's spectacular "Load New Commander" track. I hope you'll enjoy watching this as much as I did making it!
By the way, if you are new to this series, every game featured in this video has its own review, available under the Top 85 Games For The BBC Micro playlist: • Top 85 Games for the B...
If you enjoyed "Load New Commander", you should definitely check out Nicole's other work - you can find her online here: nicolemakesmus...
Really great video! Thanks again Colin for having me onboard making the music 💜
Thank you, Nicole, for your amazing work! It was a lot of fun collaborating on this 😊
the music is great! you are a very talented musician! :)
@@ColinHoadyay thank you, and likewise! 😁
@@cruxincthanks so much!! 😃
@@cruxincthank you!! 😃
I remember this like yesterday....in my physics class we introduced to the recently released BBC computer....if id only known how this was going to change everything i may have listened more intently...
Even I could never have predicted where this marvellous machine would take me - indirectly, to a career in IT! An amazing machine, we never knew quite how fortunate we were to live during its time in the sun!
Wow! Some really cool looking games on this machine….especially the shoot ‘em ups. 👾
Absolutely - it might not have had the same range of games as a Spectrum or C64 but what it did have it did exceptionally well 👌
Fantastic video. And I'll never tire of seeing my favourite room from Palace of Magic - the cellar that contains the miniature tree!!
Haha yes, when I was picking the clips, I just had to feature that room to represent Palace of Magic 😁
Ha yes, I love that room too. I wonder why it is so popular?
I think it's like a little sanctuary! The water doesn't harm you. No killer bunnies. And the wonder of how the tree managed to grow there!
First of any sponsor promoted video that i genuinely like, great music with some awesome old game clips.
Zaxxon, Last Ninja, Space Invaders, Frogger, Paperboy... Really cool!
That's extremely kind of you, I've not tried promoting my videos before but I'm so glad I did after hearing this feedback 😀
Colin, I don't know if you've seen this already, but a TH-camr named Hypo uploaded a complete playthrough of Elixir a few months ago. I agree with him that this was an underrated BBC Micro game which I used to spend hours on (but never completed despite the effort). I always appreciated the creative graphics and clever use of colour, but the gameplay was somewhat hard. This Hypo guy completes it nicely! The title of the video is "Elixir - Playthrough with Commentary - 80s Retro BBC Micro Gaming". If you haven't seen it already, I think you'll enjoy it.
I'd not seen it, thank you for the pointer! 😀
Great recap and great music. Very entertaining yet also mildly traumatic. It summarises how many games were remakes or variants of original classics from the arcades before home micros were a thing. That was one of the reasons I loved the Beeb so much. It was the best machine available that allowed me to relieve all the time I had spent playing the originals without having to constantly feed the coin slots. We have come a long way since Pong was such a magical wonder!
Yes, even for me, seeing them all together like this is a joy - as a child I wasn't even aware of just how many of these games were arcade clones / variants. The Beeb will always be king of the 8-bits for me!
Great video, and great music. A nice early Christmas present!
Thank you! 😀
this is great! the musician is very talanted! great editing as well!
Thank you! Yes, she's very talented - I'm so pleased with the music 🎶
Nice seeing all these together, what a fantastic selection of great games the Beeb had. Great vid as always Colin.
Thank you very much! Yes, I also love seeing them all together like this 😁
All the old favourites … starship command, thrust, meteors, planetoid, tens and of course Elite. I think the only one I would have added was Ghouls for its amazing sound track.
Ah, interesting! Ghouls is a regrettable hole in my Beeb gaming history, but I have heard good things 😀
Thanks for putting together all of these videos Colin. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but you've brought my attention to some gems that I didn't know about and wouldn't have discovered by myself. Many thanks.
Thank you, that's lovely feedback! I'm glad to have helped in my own small way 😀 I've also learnt about other games from suggestions I've had from others, so it's been just as informative for me, too!
What a great way to finish it off Colin. Before I was doing the HSC on *. I would probably only recognized about 7 or 8 of those games. Now I know most of them. Good job!!!
Thank you very much! 😀
The Last Ninja....I refuse to believe anyone beat it. 6 year old me really threw himself into the deep end with those games.
It's a tough game, no doubt about it! Properly engrossing though 😀
Great seeing all these games again
Yes, it's quite fun even for me to rewatch! Mainly because of the music 😁
I feel Shark by Audiogenic in 1988 should have made the top 85. It's a superb arcade platformer with great graphics, design and gameplay.
I sadly didn't have many of Audiogenic's titles when I was growing up, but having come to them as an adult I love them - tremendous creativity and very playable games!
Did you ever play Twin Kingdom Valley? Think that, Palace of Magic and Imogen were my favourites. It was a text adventure...but with graphics.
No, I've not played Twin Kingdom Valley - I'll have to give that one a try!
Best sponsored youtube video
Thank you! I'm glad I decided to give promotion a try, I am pleased with the video (especially the music!) so I'm glad you liked it too 😀
Nicely put together. I would have a lot of different ones on there, not to say anything "wrong" with your choices, I suppose it is more to do with my memories of what I played all those years ago.
Yes, in many ways, it's a very personal thing - but hopefully there's still a good overlap with some of your favourites 😅
Very nicely done!
Thanks 😁
Hope this has the game i remember from school that i figured out how to skip levels lol
I hope it did too - let me know if it was missing! 😅
Thinking about it, was some kind of gane where you went round digging up artefacts I think, but may be wrong I was 5 😆
The names of the game are in a very irritating spot. Constantly covered by TH-cams interface if I skip back or forward.
Sorry about that - if you go to the main playlist you should be able to see every game and title featured in this video
