I’m an Nzema. My parents are from both Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. I understand 99.9% Nzema but can not speak as I was born and raised in New York City. I have a deep affinity for the history of our people (my Dad has helped me foster this love). I believe our people are also some of the first people to roam this earth with a direct relation to the mitochondrial “Eve”. Either way, I enjoyed your work and am surely subscribing. Cheers
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I hope we get to share knowledge and learn from each other as time goes on. The next video is being put together so stay tuned. Cheers
Hmmm interesting history, well as I listen to your video or which may say audio. The Nzemas did not fight against the Ashantis in any war, but it was the Aowins who made a mistake to take some of the villages in Ashanti as hostages and they really suffered mass destruction. I got the opportunity to read some historical documents in Holland and UK concerning Ghana history.

Me ɛdiɛma, mo ! Your account was very interesting. However i would like to respectfully make some comments and observations. You gave a condensed version of the Nzema history. There is evidence that suggests the Nzema have been settled along the coasts of modern day Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana for at least 800 years probably longer so the positioning of some of the characters mentioned make the account appear anachronistic. Just an aside before I comment further, the name Apollo was in this instance a Judeo-Christian from the first century who lived in Egypt and christians particularly catholics, if I am not mistaken, observed a feast in his memory every year on 25 January. We can therefore assume that the Portuguese arrived on the shores of the Nzema coast at the end of the 15th century (over 500 years ago) on that date and met the Nzema people there. The feast was not honouring the Greek deity with the same name. The account of the Nzema ambushing the Asante and defeating them sounds identical to the defeat of the Asante by the Akyem. The Akyem version is well known, even documented and thus their account is not in doubt. It was during this battle the first Asantehene Osei Tutu l was fatally wounded and hence up until 2019 (for 300 years) no Asantehene had or was permitted to cross the Pra river and enter the Akyem kingdom as a result of this defeat. The Pra is in fact a river that borders, Ahanta, Denkyira and Fante and not Nzema. I therefore would be sceptical to accept that this is how the Nzema were accorded the name Kotoko and attained an allegiance with the Asante. The black river you refer to, I think, is the Tanoɛ/Tano. Archaelogical evidence and the patterns of Nzema settlements provides evidence that the Nzema came from the north along one of the rivers, most likely the Nzi and upon arriving at the coast spread from their westernmost settlements - eastwards until eventually they met with the Ahanta. The Ahanta had come to the coast travelling along the Pra river and at the coast near Shama started spreading westward. Just near Agona Nkwanta there is a village called Ampeminyim which is near the cross roads between the Wassa, Ahanta and Evalue Nzema borders. The names is said to have come from the term 'cut no further' and oral tradition suggests that this was at the edge of the Evalue Nzema state and was the point where the Nzema and Ahanta had agreed their traditional states ended. I think it would be unfair to omit any mention of the Guan people, which the various Akan groups encountered in several locations duration their migration. The Guans had settled in many places along the coast and other parts of Ghana long before the Akan and so some were displaced or absorbed in to the Akan. This is why you find Guan enclaves spread around Ghana, such as at Winneba, Larteh, Nkonya. It is quite probable that the Nzema being one of the earliest Akan groups to migrate further south that some of the Guan were absorbed by them. It is probably why the Nzema language is more distinct from other Akan languages, because we borrowed some words from the Guan. Valsecchi, Bosman and Grotanelli's books are good sources of understanding and learning about the Nzema from the 17th century onwards. The Dutch and Portuguese also recorded much of Nzema history from the 15th century onwards. The Dutch who traded and were present in Nzema longer than any other European nation probably have the most extensive written records. When it comes to oral history there is a need to back up its veracity with other types of evidence. As an example; I have been told that our 'grandfathers' lived in Axim when the island Beboawusi was adjoined to the mainland. First of all the term grandfathers is misleading and is certainly not merely two generations back. Additionally there are illustrations of the island and written accounts of it by Bosman from the mid 16th century. When we also throw in a bit of geology, concerning coastal erosion then it seems apparent if it is true that they were living at Axim before Beboawusi became an island then our people may have settled there around 1,000 years ago. If you are interested we have an an Nzema group on WhatsApp where we have discussions about history, culture and the language.
They called it Apollo not because the Portuguese had a god called Apollo. It was the greeks. Anywhere Greeks settle, has an Apollonia. The Ancient Greeks had a god named Apollo. The reason why Nzema was called Apollo is because Nzema, Aowin and the Ahanta are all Ancient Greeks. Which was also a semi-Semitic language. Greeks always lived alongside Hebrews. The white man knew who you were. You didn’t.
Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate it. Are you by any means saying, we did not know who we were before the white man came to tell us we are so so and so?. Secondly i did not say we were named after a greek god. I said, the portugess called us appolonians because they landed on our shores on the day of their saint apollo. I will howerver look into us nzema being greeks. I cannot throw that into the waters without proof but i do believe we are part of the hebrew speaking group. Cheers
There was no official country called Greece. The Ancient Greeks were never one. And never called themselves Greece. That’s a creation of the British. Just like Israel is.
