Something cool you can do (which is nothing new for bass players at least) is to change the split block to a crossover where the low end is sent to one path and the treble is sent to another. With bass, you can do that to keep your low end clean so it stays nice and "bassy," but put some dirt on the higher end frequencies of the bass to give it some grit, then blend the two together. Works great. It would probably work great for guitar as well.
Chad you are a great instructor. I am waiting for my Helix to be delivered, but believe I will be able to hit the ground running after watching this series of lessons! Much appreciated!

Great video Chad! I’m a fan of putting one amp on path 1a and the second on path 2b so that I have plenty of space for pre amp, post amp, and amp specific effects. Isn’t the Helix amazing?
Chad, great series. Thanks. I'm currently using my Helix in Stomp/Preset mode. I've created all the patches I use this way, but I'm finding it would benefit me to incorporate some snapshots to more seamlessly switch from acoustic Variax to heavy lead, (Wanted Dead or Alive, one example). I need to remove the glitch when switching. Is there a way to take my 2 separate patches and create a Snapshot by copy/paste, or do I need to create a Snapshot from scratch? Also, can I setup one patch to be a Snapshot and the next, (as I advance up patches and banks) to be Preset/Stomp? Snapshot wasn't really dialed in when I first purchased my Helix, and I've always been old school stomp effects. I do always setup multiple effects on 1 switch, (when needed). Thanks for any suggestions.
Glad you like the videos! There isn't a way to copy/paste snapshots unfortunately. There are times this would definitely have save me some work. I wish you could. As far as the footswitch setup there isn't a way to have different presets have different footswitch setups per se. The way I do it is have the stomp mode for all of my effect on/off changing, and the main view is set to 8 snapshots. I very rarely change presets, so having all of the footswitch flexibility in one preset works for me, versus having footswitches dedicated to changing patches. You can do your main footswitch mode as 4 preset/4 snapshot, and still use the mode switch to get into stomp mode. Additionally, and it's a little more advanced, you can use the command center function to make any footswitch anything you want it to be inside of a preset. It will be on a preset to preset basis. I have done this in the past when I needed very specific switching for a song.
having trouble with this...I've followed every step meticulously,,,, i want chorus on the clean amp but not the overdriven (as in the example), but its not happening! I'm still getting the effect albeit greatly reduced... same with reverbs and delays etc... Am i missing something? heres my path... amp/cab (clean) on path one.. second amp/cab (dirty) on path 2A.. Path 2B which should effect clean amp has chorus and delay with the reverb after the merge block (so it effects both amps).. When i bypass clean amp altogether but leave the fx on, you can hear them effecting the dirty amp although not as much... Can you tell me where im going wrong! Good video though... Cheers!
I'm replying to this not sitting in front of Helix, so I'll do my best to trouble shoot from memory :) What I think is happening is that when you bypass/turn off the clean amp your guitar signal still gets fed through it. It will be MUCH quieter, but it's still there. Which is probably why you're still hearing the effects. If you are using the merge block to switch between the paths then that shouldn't be happening, but if you are just bypassing the clean amp block you'll experience what you're hearing. Without seeing your preset I can't be sure which is happening, but let me know if you are bypassing the clean amp model only, and if so that's the problem.

Hi ..Great vid.. Im trying to get a mix of clean and dirty with chorus on the clean.. Its what i hear when listening to the song Rio by Duran Duran, which we cover in our 80s band.. Unless i'm doing something wrong, it seems that when you disengage the clean or dirty amp, you still get the clean DI'd sound... as if the input signal is just passing through all the blocks unnaffected and coming out the other end.. Hope i explained that right... So.. if you just wanted the dirty sound, you would set up a snapshot to disengage the clean amp. but when i do this, you end up with a clean sound over the top anyway.. what's the way around this? Cheers..
What you want to do is assign the split block before the amps to pan hard left/right when you engage/disengage the amps. That way the signal doesn't go through the path that has an amp turned off.
Thanks so much for the fast response... Ive just done this, but the problem remains.. I can disengage both amps and still hear a very prominent, very uninteresting clean tone...
Beginning to think i may have had this issue all along! I use helix into two powered monitors via 1/4 inch jacks.. Again, i may be wrong, but if i disengage an amp and cab, then i would expect to hear nothing, but that DI tone is there constantly, even on very simple amp/cab patches, which tells me ive been getting a mix of modelled amp and DI all along! This would explain why the sound of my strat ultra never sounds as bright and stratty as the ones i hear on vaqrious youtube vids! If i had hair i'd be pulling it out by now! 🤣🤣
@@andybrown3990 I hear you about pulling your hair out 😂 So even if nothing is engaged the dry signal will pass through. If you're going to do a split path with two amps the trick is you have to have the split block hard pan to the path that the amp is turned on. Whenever you engage the other amp you need to have the split block hardpan to that path. Honestly you don't even have to engage and disengage the amps, you can just use that split block to choose the path that the signal is going to go through. I either use a footswitch or snapshots to control this type of thing.
Thanks so much once again, its very much appreciated! I think i have it, i have gone through your vid once again and followed it very precisely! So if its a given the the dry unprocessed signal is always going to be there, then having certain fx working for either seperate amps or globally doesnt seem to work for me! That dry unprocessed signal is being affected anyway.. So if you think of the dry signal as a very poor sounding clean amp, then setting it up this way means (to me anyway), that there will always be some unprocessed clean mixed with your dirty and that clean tone (or vice versa) will be affected by any chorus/delays etc, (albeit to a lesser extent... I cannot have the clean amp alone with chorus or whatever, as there is always some type of bleed..Ive tried all stereo blocks and all mono blocks but the results are the same! Sometimes i need clean/dirty together and sometimes i just want dirty, but like i say, the clean amp is just replaced with a clean DI...
question Chad, could you set up a dual amp setup with a clean amp and a distorted amp and use snapshots to turn on and off amps as well as settings on the amp?
You can do that for sure. However I wouldn't use snapshots to turn the amps on /off, I would use the snapshot to control the split block in front of the amps to send the signal from one amp/path to the other. If you just turn the amp off you'll still here clean guitar signal coming through the path that has the amp turned off. That's why I would use snapshots to change the signal routing. If you haven't already watched it, and you aren't super familiar with assigning parameters to snapshots, you can watch this one: th-cam.com/video/qOO-IIhvuec/w-d-xo.html Specifically though just go to the split block before the amps and set it to Split A/B. Right click where it says "even split" and choose snapshots in the menu to set it to be controlled by snapshots. For one snapshot set the balance all the way to path A and for the other snapshot all the way to path B. That's all there is to it. Let me know if that makes sense. Thanks.
@@ChadHuskey can also assign a foot switch to the split. That was my question a while back about turning multiple distortion pedals on/off at the same time. Didn't know you could assign multiple things to one foot switch when I asked the question, which you had given a solution in the very next video.

With dual amps it seems to sound better if you invert the polarity in the merge block. Learned that from Nick Hill channel.
