Chuck Rainey is a musician's bass player. The man is a Master of the bass, never stepping into the tonality of the other instruments. He has teamed up with Bernard Purdy on so many major recordings that you almost can't believe that it's possible to assemble such a huge catalog of music! He is a National Treasure! Thank you Chuck! The world is a better place because of you.. Lary
@Tom Cass - Yes Tom, his intellect is perhaps the Secret of his Success.. That ability to view each piece of work from an Abstract perspective is part of what he brings with him every time he comes into the studio, and is part of what allows him to see, and feel, the solid foundation that many other players may not see.. It's the kind of attitude that musicians like Walter Becker and Larry Carlton would pick up on Immediately.. All of these guys are/were at the same level of Musicianship and Shared Respect, as well as being really Great People... Lary
I'd been hearing this man all my life, but I just discovered him as a player. His timing and feel are so beautiful and effortless. I've been struggling a little with my bass technique and this is just great stuff.
Great Chuck and reat Bernad at the drums. What a rythm section! Those 2 guys work so well together that is always a pleasure to ear them even on an instruction video like this. What a pair of musicians. Keyboard player is very good also but I don't know him, but he does the work also.
What a wonderful understanding of music, not just music, but how he ties it into feeling and rythym. I really like his explanations, he doesn't over complicate his line of thinking..
11:48 POP SHUFFLE as "Home at last". 38:11 POP BALLAD as "Misty". 49:06 POP FUNK as "Josie". Chuck finally said the most important thing. As much as possible, keep your fingers on the instrument.
No flashy bass solos, this guy is one of the very best and he does what a bass player should, lay down the musical groove. His bass work with Steely Dan helped make some of their most iconic tracks. Chuck with Bernard Purdie is musical heaven. Watch the DVD about the making of Aja and how Chuck threw in some slapping hidden from Donald and Walter, hilarious.
What are you talking about? I said this is the most useful bass tuition I have seen, not the best bassist. I agree JJ was pretty special. Try to read what people actually write before jumping to post your smart-arse nonsense.
You helped create bass as a first voice instrument & bring it out front ~ love the Steely Dan Years - King Curtis - & Quincy Jones, what a pick up: StreetBeaters? wow! Your bass paid your way! L&R Jaye
Chuck Rainey is brilliant.. and in this he is playing with my all time favorite drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie...

Super video.. just not a fan of that DX7 sound they chose tho.. I have so many great recordings with Rainey holding it down. Thanks for sharing this rare video.
@Pat Gannon if you're referring to Scott Devine, I think I agree that his latest stuff focuses to much on things like shredding, and I think he should emphasize the basics more.

Super demonstrations.
Rainey is not only a musical legend, but also a gifted instructor.
Whoever posted this is going straight to heaven
Thoughtful and soulful bass master--thank you Mister Rainey.

One of the very best rhythm sections of all times!!! Can't get much better than that!!!
Very true. Chuck Raney and Bernard Purdie. This are the real professional musicians.

"Some bass players use two fingers; I don't have that facility." - Chuck Rainey explaining his one finger techniques. Bass teachers - eat that!
I love how Chuck says "him" when referring to his drummer. Brah! that's Bernard Purdie! lol
A master drummer.
What a wonderful understanding of music, not just music, but how he ties it into feeling and rythym.
I really like his explanations, he doesn't over complicate his line of thinking..
These are life-long lessons here. He's got such an organic feel and just all around interpretation.
I saw Jack Bruce use that first finger technique with Cream in 1967 and later in 1970 with Tony Williams Lifetime.
This is a terrific video! It's demystified some of the intricacies of bass playing for me. Great musician and teacher
The combination is rare.

I love flashy solos=brothers Johnson but this guy is his own thing.
too cool, I had to stand by the heater
Chuck Rainey, damn bro your awesome!
This is the most useful hour's bass tuition I have seen. Thanks

Absolutely. Professor Chuck.
Wow...I don't play Bass, but after watching this...I feel I can now pickup a Bass and play anything.😙😉
You helped create bass as a first voice instrument & bring it out front ~ love the Steely Dan Years - King Curtis - & Quincy Jones, what a pick up: StreetBeaters? wow! Your bass paid your way! L&R Jaye
Thanks for the upload, I love Chuck Rainey!

His work with Steely Dan is sublime...Green Earrings is so tasty! :)
i love kid charlemagne bass line
Jose Abascal. A super wacky bassline!!!
Solid as fuck. No flash bollocks, just rock solid.
the sound of that dx7 is positively painful
His playing on Josie is incredible! And peg his fretting is admired by Walter Becker in the making of Aja album!
This is the best bass turotial on the whole of youtube.
Best ever!
Dude does not play with a pick...he doesn't need to. Incredible!
Cool! Purdy on drums! : ) Holy smoke!

Ha ha - that DX7 😂😂😂 Great for Human League but not as a Hammond B3 replacement
The Lockdowner That's for sure. I 'm pretty sure he was having difficulty with it. It's not a particularly expressive instrument.
Who played bass on, Until you come back by Aretha Franklin?
Chuck Rainey! Definately soul bass personified!
I thought so.
Chuck played on many great tunes like Rock steady with Aretha and Dancing machine with the Jackson 5.
Excellent video thank you!
Curious if you ever met Carol Kaye - is it a small world? Best to the Best P&L, Jaye
I like how he keeps referring to one of the greatest drummers of all time as "this drummer"
Is this available on DVD or download?

How far off a back wall, should my Cab be for optimal reflection?
Depends on how you play. If you can't (like most wannabes) I would suggest way, way far off.
Will somebody unplug that fuckin dx7. I don’t care whos playing it
thumbnail looks like a hostage video. was worried for a minute
The bass as it should be played. No glove, no bullshit, just music.
@Pat Gannon if you're referring to Scott Devine, I think I agree that his latest stuff focuses to much on things like shredding, and I think he should emphasize the basics more.
I couldn't agree more, but the glove he's wearing is because he has focal dystonia, a neurological condition LOL
You are of the one of best artist of the bass guitar
@57:25 I give up. OMG LOL!! So insane
Oh damn!!!!!! Masterful work right there!
He surely must be one of the oldest bass players to slap? He's 6 years older than Larry Graham.
Genuises
It ended too soon
Why doesn’t he say Bernard?....it’s Bernard Purdie!!!
finally someone noticed The Purdie shuffle on the drums!
Hallo.
The keyboard is much to loud.
I could not hear the bass on that grove the band was playing..
Oh dear...!
