I remember some countries in Europe where higher education is free but limited slots and only courses with high job market demand and practical ones. Canada emulated the US, student loans, more profit.

Foreign students are also subsidized by the Canadian taxpayer. And they should pay double what they currently do. There are too many, and they fill seats meant for young Canadians.
@@parasmehta5448 They should be charged far more. They're here for themselves. It's not their birthright to be here. It's ridiculous that Canadian taxpayers and citizens are being priced out of their own cities because we don't want to live 10 people to 1 bedroom apartment.
@@Finness894given the current financial situation in Canada the well-being of the entire country is more important than a privatized colleges and universities bottom line. The increase of price will obviously make it more difficult for some families to go to school but remember that the government regulates the prices the colleges and universities charge so they can’t just decide they are going to start charging domestic students 30,000 a year in tuition.. The colleges and universities are going to have to adjust and learn how to survive, it’s going to hurt the colleges more than anyone because they have been the ones taking the most advantage over international students and offering up 1-2 year diplomas for 80,000 to help them try to get permanent residency and the colleges also don’t have as many tenured staff making 100,000+ a year so they have been sucking from the tit the most and you can see that if you go to any college campus across the country and see their state of the art facilities

Post-secondary in Canada is not affordable, not for a lot of people. We pay ample in taxes every year, maybe it is time we get something for these taxes instead of shipping the cost to foreign students that Canadian citizens don't want here in the first place.
International Students pay full price i think. I know its about 3x the price of domestic students. But i agree still because Canadian spots are being taken up in the universities and our research is being legally observed in Canada and brought back to China to be built. This happens very frequently in grad school and there is an industry in China and probably a few other countries as well supporting this. My friend's idea for her thesis was found out, written up and published by a foreign Chinese girl in our department. They are just spying out in the open and a lot of the professors are starting to be foreign as well. Foreign professors probably don't care about keeping research in Canada either they care about making science and don't care how it gets accomplished.
@@BigCheese150 Many of our foreign students come here believing the LIE that Canadian healthcare is FREE... This education for profit is the driving force behind post secondary education becoming worthless...now any idiot with tuition is welcome, no longer are decent highschool grades a prerequisite to entry... Post secondary degree means absolutely nothing today, not worth he value of the paper it's printed on
It wasn't always this way, with so many foreign students that universities tend to focus on them instead of Canadian students. IF it's important for foreign students to subsidize housing and tuition for Canadian students, how did the universities cope prior to about 1999, when tuition shot up like a NASA rocket? This is about deficiencies (like housing) and priorities in society. Look at the European countries who invest increasingly in healthcare, education and higher education, including R&D. What is so very wrong with Canada that we are now near the bottom of OECD countries??? Thanks to illegal and legal migration into Canada since PMJT took office, we have about 3 Million more people, all living in the crowded southern part of Canada. Statistics Canada announced on June 16, 2023 that our population had then just reached 40,000,000. But healthcare STAFFING and HOSPITAL BEDS have remained the same since cutbacks in the 90's. Do you know that every foreign student is considered a permanent resident? And an immigrant to Canada? If foreign students and other immigrants are raising the standard of living in Canada, then why don't we expand our health and education services? My country is rapidly becoming a complete disaster! It's unaffordable. There are no family doctors available for those without one. And the mood is grim. Thank you Justin Trudeau!
The domestic tuitions for top universities would not be impacted by the cap, because the foreign students applied to these universities would not be much affected. The only colleges to raise tuitions significantly are those bad actors who enroll as many international students as they can, indespite of the students acedamic qualities, like Conestoga college. As for these bad actors, their reputation has already broke, and no rational parent would send their kids to study there, so even conestoga college raise tuition, it won't affect domestic students, because nobody attend it. The only fate for the bad actors like conestoga is to be closed, and which is good because it should not exist anymore.
Those institutions need to be overhauled, we don’t need any more foreign students and should not be participating with corporations to do there bidding. No research for the pharmaceutical companies and other corporations.
Until 2020 (pandemic), most Canadians would have proudly & quickly said Canada is a great place. For multiple generations (young & old). It still is in many ways. But like all countries, a bunch of things have made life more difficult lately. During the Covid lockdowns, many people in apartments (or major cities) went nuts wanting to buy homes everywhere (urban & rural). Increasing demand and rising prices. Not long after, inflation caused mortgage rates especially to rise. Rent costs have soared too. People interested in working in hospitals declined. Less doctors etc.. Simultaneously in Cda, the number of people coming by air, land and boat to claim asylum SKYROCKETED. For example, in 2023 alone, in just one region (Ontario) around 275 people arrived per day (on average). Ditto for other populated provinces. Also the number of international students skyrocketed too. Averaging around 1,096 per day in 2023 alone. Hospitals then hit with many wanting free healthcare. Less drs/nurses etc., means greater waiting times. A severe housing crisis has occurred in many western countries including in Canada. In ways not seen in people's lifetimes. Almost all humans trying to migrate to Canada have been from South Asia. And it's become extremely obvious to Canadians. Even those that are very used to much diversity & many cultures. Unfortunately not all players have acted honestly over the years. False asylum claims. Foreign 'agents' deceiving students for $. Plus some Canadians, many with ties overseas, became greedy and started doing things to make $ off of people's desperation. Then this year throw in all the Palestinian vs Israeli angry protests happening regularly in cities. Plus the Sikh vs Hindu violence/extortion happening in Ontario and BC . All stemming from affairs in the Asian continent. Hate crimes. Canadians are not used to all this. So many, who have embraced multi-culturalism and immigration for decades are now worried and fearful (due to all of the above). And all are praying it doesn't turn into great anger (like in the USA). We want multi-culturism to succeed ... and for all people to be okay. Everyone I know is HAPPY with Canada Immigration's recent changes. Including multigeneration long-term Asian Canadians.
This is why I decided not to discuss any migration topics these young folks or naive parents would never get the West politics or how unpopular Trudeau or Biden is. Do not tell do not ask is my motto these days.
@notmymains of course but it is also your job to judge whether these naive people are able to process it.. because I tried once then twice and they got zero exposure nor interests.. so I go midway - they should show a curiosity as it's not my job to promote West politics. They would better find out themselves or they shouldn't come at all ... Otherwise the hard reality could be heart breaking aka not worth the costs. Home sweet home anyway- there's always someone to catch when they're about to fall..
Multi-culturalism has been a horrific failure in every country that's tried it. Some groups of people are not meant to live together and Canada is for the Canadians! Foreigner leeches need to leave.
Maybe domestic students should pay more. We already have an over supply of university degrees and a shortage of trades. If we made it more expensive it could shift things towards more of the types of jobs that we actually need
Also an over supply of post secondary institutions in general. You can google the education crisis in India and it has a run down of how shady these "higher education" institutions really are. Oh, and these half ass instutions are popping up here offering garbage certificates at explosive pricing. Also, see Trump university if you don't think things have gone south. No wonder people don't believe in post secondary anymore.
Canadians want a 30 year ban, not a cap on all immigration, asylum seekers, refugees and worker/student permits. Invest in Canadians, we want livable hours, pay with benefits.. BOOM, labour shortage solved!
why the hell should I care about a reduction in foreign students? The cost of housing is absolutely ludricous in Canada now, care about the people that are already citizens here first. I truly don't care about the bottom line profit of these universities or colleges who can't bring in more students to pay their ridiculous tuition rates.
Paying higher tuition for kids’ education is the lesser necessary evil than renting for life because of the exorbitant house prices. At least your hard-earned money was spent better this way than letting it go to waste to irretrievable rent expenses.
Why is it that people think it is the federal government’s responsibility to build housing using taxpayer money ?The banks have inflated the cost of housing to line their pockets for a long time. The price of houses have jumped substantially. The CHMC should shut down the banks, if the Federal Government is financing housing then take the Banks totally out of the equation. NO MORE MORTGAGES through the banks.
All of the important programs are full up. That won’t change without foreign students, and it would mean more Canadians get access to high return educations. This is a win for Canadians, and Canadians in general come first before the bottom lines of ‘higher learning’ institutions.
This dude is not necessarily wrong but you can't just solve this with one silver bullet. Restricting foreign students is an important part of the equation. If uni tuitions go higher that would likely by comparison incentivize people to get into the trades more which is desperately needed to build the houses we need.
The fact that he needs correcting and is purposefully wording things in a manipulative way makes him wrong, if you feel the need to add “but” at the end of “he’s not wrong” then he’s probably wrong.
You know why people are divorcing at such an insane rate? MONEY. The first and biggest problem for almost everyone. Canadians are now all poor when those same Canadians used to be considered middle class. No one has money to even buy groceries without looking at the price of everything. Holidays don’t exist anymore and personal debt is now being forced upon us due to lack of increase in pay. 120k used to be a decent salary. Now it’s nothing … I had more money when I was making 30k in 2002.

Completely wrong answer!! The Fed didn't cut 35% from Universities ( Masters ..Doctorate or higher degree program) Where students coming in for a full time genuine education/degrees. The cut is for those small craeer college with one year program ( 6 months of class/ online). Most foreign students enroll into it to get a work permit than post education work permit and than for PR!! Just a loophole to work towards Canadian PR!

Rather have 5x cost for education if it means no more immigration, we're damn full we don't need anymore people. This country is for Canadians, we need to start focusing on that before anything else. @2:25
Universities are complaining that they will have financial strain due to the cap. Cinestoga made 140 million dollars last year. Bringing in more students without housing, might strain universities but it will have a bigger strain on canadians. So what is the right decision - put a cap on students. Canada needs a spine. Really.
When a community is asked or forced to absorb and sustain with their resources, the international students , the universities, and colleges bring in. a community must ask if it is worth having a college or a university. This is not sustainable . Close the doors ...
University/ colleges making huge money from international students on cost of domestic students. Youth here is not being given admission, which is really bad. Government and colleges are playing with youths who are born here. Majority of student getting admission here ther want PR card and move to US or Australia for so many reasons.
The affordability crisis is 2-fold. Too much demand and not enough supply. Ultimately the answer is more supply but for the time being we need to turn the taps off by seriously reducing immigration and international students for the next few years at least until supply can catch up.
Finally someone who is speaking to some of the issues. Why aren’t we holding our politicians accountable for their inactions rather than blaming international students? Why haven’t they built housing since 2010? International students are only good for working those low wage jobs that Canadians do not want to work. Oh I see. The stench of racism and exaltation.
Do you understand the caste system that a lot of the "students" practice? Or the xenophobia they bring with them which? Or the queer hatred a lot of wonderful newcomers now display publicly? You can't shutdown legit concers of the tax paying citizens of this country by screaming 'racism'. Yes racists exist, but this isn't about them. Also, not every racist has white features or European background.
It is simple,,,, before anyone comes to this country,,, accommodation should be reserved. they are flooding in here and once they arrive then they find out there is no where to live. how crazy!
Why should Canadians have to give money to universities when they are gouging students ridiculous sums of money to go to them and why do people seem to think every young person needs a university degree especially with these courses where no job's exist just greedy scammers with these so called teachers making 4-5 hundred thousand dollars a year There are one hell of a lot more job's out there that people don't need to go to school till they are in their mid thirties than there are job's requiring some useless degree that they will never use I believe that this is contributing to the labor shortage in the country
I rather pay higher tuition costs and increase my chances for my children to get into the program they want. Now, with the influx of foreign students, there is so much more competition for the limited placements at universities. Our children are being outcompeted and abandoned. Minimum entrance grades are getting ridiculous that even a 95% average won’t get you into some of the good programs.
Post secondary education should be affordable with or without international students. If they keep jacking up tuition then we won't have people going to university or college and we'll see a huge drain in many key sectors as a result. We need more public funding of post secondary education. In the end it benefits us all.
That is the last thing we need, that will just cause the diploma mills to shit out more useless degrees in order to claim that government money. There needs to be a change to how post-secondary institutions are incentivized.
It’s not about someone telling you which career you need to have it’s about ensuring that we are able to function as a country and to function well we all need to take on a role and unfortunately there are just some careers and roles that are more valuable and important to a functioning country. for example, one thing no one is protected from is we all get sick at some point in our lives, who do you need to help sick people? Well doctors and nurses. So we should then prioritize educating people to become doctors and nurses. In addition to this how many times in your life have you ever needed to get assistance from a philosopher? Rarely ever.
@@TylerH12 So by your logic why don't we just assign everyone a career based on what society needs at the time? Oh wait, that's Communism.... Fees for foreign students are discriminatory as they are charged exorbitantly high compared to Canadian students. Solution is not to stop the students, rather to find a solution. This is an opportunity for real estate booming and can allow incentives to invest in real estate. Well, if the main idea of the Canadian Govt., is to stop or reduce immigration any ways and just highlight housing as problem for the sake of it, then its a different issue. But the key for Canadian govt., is to take quality students and quality work force, who can really contribute to the economy. Labour related work must be restricted as future is more on automation and robotics or AI.

This guy has no clue Reducing international students is only 1 part of the equation to the affordability of housing in Canada I can tell he went to Laurier because he doesn’t understand how to interpret basic trends Less students = less pressure on rental housing = more housing availability = reduction in rent prices = less financial stress on Canadians so they can afford to feed themselves To his point about building more housing, of course we need to build more housing but the international students are compounding the problem so it’s a smart decision by the government to enact this policy The colleges and universities are going to hurt from this of course but they have been scamming international students for the past 2 decades scraping in billions of dollars a year in tuition fees and specifically the colleges have built state of the art campuses across the country with this money they have gotten from them The government subsidizes part of the tuition for every domestic student and so now the colleges and universities are going to have to figure it out and balance the books, we are in tough times but the well being of the entire country is more important than colleges and universities increasing their prices, remember the colleges and universities have a responsibility to provide and education to the people to ensure we have a productive labour force it’s not their responsibility to become a billion dollar corporation, they need to get their values straight The 2nd part of this housing crisis is putting a limit on how many properties investors can own or any person in the country can own because this is an even bigger problem Then the 3rd aspect of the problem is the fact we haven’t built enough housing which is something he said and this decision will help us be able to catch up and in turn relief some stress to Canadians Maybe this guy is still spending too much time at night school on king st because that was an absolute horrible take, I actually can’t believe they brought this clown in tv to spew that crap
Maybe Canada universities have gotten financially sloppy. There was a day. When the universities in Canada had a mandate to provide continuing education for Canadian students. But it seems they got hooked on the money they got by fleecing foreign students by the higher tuitions. You got off track guys! Further, when the university I attended for my engineering degree started adding pronouns to web pages of the staff, I stopped my meagre donations... How can a university be both WOKE and ripoff artists when it comes to foreign students tuitions? And, if you want foreign students, why have you not provided more student housing. So called academics are like our drama school PM... Can't see or understand that their policies have consequences that they did not care to plan for. Suck it up!
International students pay thrice the fees cost of Canadian students, also international students pay their living cost is advance for a year. Earlier it was $10,000. Now it is $20,000. International students studies, work hard whereas canadian students vape and smoke weed all day long relying on the government rather than working hard and making their way in the competitive world. Also, the Canadian government won’t stop this. They may pause it because of election coming on, but won’t stop ever. International students are Cash cow for canadian government. Indian students will not be taking up Canadian citizenship; in a very cold and dreary country. Something for Canadians to seriously consider.
BS arguments from a guy invested in banking and investment. The “addicted to foreign students” crap is wearing pretty thin, since they haven’t ALWAYS has foreign students to the level they have now. If universities cannot run on the income of domestic students, then where are they spending the money now that they didn’t spend 50 years ago? The housing supply shortage is also a bit of a stretch. The housing shortage is being caused by corporate and private investment in real estate that not only bids up values of housing artificially, but also essentially removes homes from availability for use as single family dwellings and makes them become rental units. Stop foreign acquisition of real estate as investments, heavily tax corporations and individuals that use housing as “passive income” or investments and create a specific tax for those holding more than 3 single family dwellings. Wealthy individuals gobbling up properties is the problem…and who can afford a new house now anyway? A half million dollars for 1500 sq feet of house makes new houses unattainable for most…so all the new housing gets bought up to be used as rental units. I’m sure as hell not in favour of reducing taxes for any part of the supply chain, since those guys seem to do pretty well. The way things are headed, most Canadians will be stuck renting for life because the 5 percent make it impossible for anyone else to own.

I remember some countries in Europe where higher education is free but limited slots and only courses with high job market demand and practical ones. Canada emulated the US, student loans, more profit.
I dont get why the media never talks about the lack of student residences, post secondaries have taken a public good and made it their own - Canadian homes.
We don’t need foreign students to fill campuses, there is not enough housing
You don’t need, but your government does. I love canadian people. And I’m not canadian but still I feel sorry for what government has done with you people
Colleges and unis make so much profit from international students that they can afford to give free education to qualified citizens (and even express entry educated PRs), build housing for the international students, and yet they don't because they want all them money (and the government is in on it).
Foreign students are also subsidized by the Canadian taxpayer. And they should pay double what they currently do. There are too many, and they fill seats meant for young Canadians.

There won't be any bad thing come from this..do immigration next..we are all sick and tired of this bs government flooding our country w immigration
Maybe there will be room Canadian students to attend university now. It's not just housing

I saw the decline over the last 2 decades dont kid yourself. CV19 brought all this crap to a head. popped the bubble.
If we made it more expensive it could shift things towards more of the types of jobs that we actually need

why the hell should I care about a reduction in foreign students?

@@johnw9038 What gives you the right to decide which degrees are usefull or not? So do other people get to tell you which career you get to have?
It’s not about someone telling you which career you need to have it’s about ensuring that we are able to function as a country and to function well we all need to take on a role and unfortunately there are just some careers and roles that are more valuable and important to a functioning country. for example, one thing no one is protected from is we all get sick at some point in our lives, who do you need to help sick people? Fees for foreign students are discriminatory as they are charged exorbitantly high compared to Canadian students. Solution is not to stop the students, rather to find a solution. This is an opportunity for real estate booming and can allow incentives to invest in real estate. Well, if the main idea of the Canadian Govt., is to stop or reduce immigration any ways and just highlight housing as problem for the sake of it, then its a different issue. But the key for Canadian govt., is to take quality students and quality work force, who can really contribute to the economy. Labour related work must be restricted as future is more on automation and robotics or AI.
It's not discriminatory. We don't owe anything to foreign students. They have the option to stay home, no one is forcing them to be here.

Reducing international students is only 1 part of the equation to the affordability of housing in Canada
I can tell he went to Laurier because he doesn’t understand how to interpret basic trends
Less students = less pressure on rental housing = more housing availability = reduction in rent prices = less financial stress on Canadians so they can afford to feed themselves
To his point about building more housing, of course we need to build more housing but the international students are compounding the problem so it’s a smart decision by the government to enact this policy
The colleges and universities are going to hurt from this of course but they have been scamming international students for the past 2 decades scraping in billions of dollars a year in tuition fees and specifically the colleges have built state of the art campuses across the country with this money they have gotten from them
The government subsidizes part of the tuition for every domestic student and so now the colleges and universities are going to have to figure it out and balance the books, we are in tough times but the well being of the entire country is more important than colleges and universities increasing their prices, remember the colleges and universities have a responsibility to provide and education to the people to ensure we have a productive labour force it’s not their responsibility to become a billion dollar corporation, they need to get their values straight
The 2nd part of this housing crisis is putting a limit on how many properties investors can own or any person in the country can own because this is an even bigger problem
Then the 3rd aspect of the problem is the fact we haven’t built enough housing which is something he said and this decision will help us be able to catch up and in turn relief some stress to Canadians
