      Sad to hear. I saw him doing some great solos in 1972 or '74 with Stan Kenton at Keesler AFB. Never forgot him!

    I was sitting in the Village Vanguard listening to Thad & Mel's Band back in the 60's and noticed the lead trumpet sounded extra awesome that day. I asked the guy next to me who it was and he said Jon Faddis. Jon was 17 at the time...

      Jon is a classic "Upstream" or forward jaw trumpet player.
      So was Jack too by the way. His range problem caused by him closing his jaw too much. And he pulls his upper lip up and away from the m/piece
      If Jack had just maintained his upper lip down below his upper teeth AND,
      Had not sneered pulling his lip upwards? He'd have played just as high as Jon.

      @@jorgecallico9177 not classic, he's sidestream too, very unique due to anatomy, and if Jack's big wide head had Jon's teeth structure his face would't have gotten on TV, maybe his voice would for later gigs...Jack studdied with Uan Rasey, the player of Chinatown movie theme, and tone was the goal, not tripple Fs. Also Jack had the healthy responce to getting in a high note duel with Jon...DON'T.

    Dizzy Gillespie saw Jon Faddis play somewhere when Faddis was still in high school, and decided to take him under his wing as a mentor to him. I think the influence is obvious.

    Anyone know what model Schilke he is using, S42?

    • @chasefreak
      @chasefreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes-Jon played a B6 in 1970-1971, then in 1971 switched to the B6L (tuning bell), he began using the S42L in 1983. Schilke has made a newer S43LHD for him but he doesn't like it as much as the S42L & B6L....

    • @allwinds3786
      @allwinds3786 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JJ Martin thanks much for the response. I remember in the late seventies 529s Wabash being told about the extremely thin bells made for his B6L

    • @chasefreak
      @chasefreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The funny thing is, Schilke made this 4 ounce beryllium-copper bell for Jon to try, Jon takes it to a studio date in NYC w Barry Manilow. The drummer drops his equipment (by accient) on Jon's horn and crushes the bell. So much for that...most of those early copper bells (like the one I have from '72 on my B6L) are VERY thin but they had a soldered bell bead which makes them resonate better than the new ones-the older ones are also a lot brighter and louder. Chase, Faddis, Johnny Madrid, Lew Soloff, Alan Rubin, Randy Brecker, Glenn Stuart were all using the B6L in the early '70's

    • @allwinds3786
      @allwinds3786 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JJ Martin I think I remember hearing that when I used to hang out at the downtown Schilke factory in the late seventies. I'm a bit of a Schilke gearhead. Too bad I can't post a picture of my '56 Schilke here.
