Such great antics, and great puppiters. I miss the days where we all use to laugh so much. God bless Johnny Carson. Thank you for all you did to help us all to enjoy our lives.

The way he makes it look like the Emu is moving him around is brilliant puppetry.

The way in which Rod Hull was able to imbue Emu with so much personality -- even though Emu never said a word (and never needed to!) -- is incredible and shows you just how gifted a puppeteer he was. The body language he gives to Emu is simply wonderful to watch.

@Bengt Handlebars Exactly...the little side gestures such as when Emu would twitch his head or look out at the audience while Rod was talking, just like a real bird his size probably would.
The expression which I loved best of all is when Emu would wrinkle his beak to show that he was annoyed or angry.

Some of us still do, but so many want to find fault in everything. It bums me out. I'm in my 50's, and I have some friends who are now under that spell. They used to laugh and enjoy humor as much as I did, but they are driven by being superior to all now. I just hope the people wake up from this at some point.

This was even funnier than the famous appearance on Parkinson. Rod had clearly perfected his art by then.
I had a friend who worked with him in panto at the Liverpool Empire in 1975. Rod told him he wanted to make it on his own but must have realised he was joined at the hip to Emu. Great times, great laughs!!! Thank you Rod!

The fear Rod Hull was able to inspire in so many adults is hilarious. I love how he gets Emu to do a cheeky look to camera before he attacks, it's those tiny details that elevate this to legendary status.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC ปีที่แล้ว +10

It's not just Emu's facial expressions...it's the fact that Emu FIDGETS when he's sitting on Rod's lap exactly like a real animal or child would (looking around the room, etc.). This is part of what made Emu seem so very lifelike (and what made Rod an incredibly gifted puppeteer) -- he had it down to a science. It's difficult visually to connect Rod to Emu's nugatory movements because they appear to be unconscious as they would be in real life which makes it seem completely natural.

He did try and be a sport by laughing but he hated it. Plus at the end he looked really pissed of and said " I knew we should not had booked it" as he put his shoe's back on. @@donnn-sg4mk Parkinson wanted to be as big as Carson but unlike Carson felt the way to be taken seriously was to be serious. So whereas Carson was confident enough to be 'attacked and ridiculed' by Emu, Parkinson was not.
They are light years apart as even being British myself I can see Carson was just so comfortable in the role and at ease with it. Parkinson was not. His 'I can see it was funny' change of heart years later was probably a business move more than honest. It riled him for ages as he thought it made him look silly.
Carson did not give a damn about looking silly and so looked great here.

What a great clip of Rod Hull & Emu. They used to make me giggle my head off as a kid back in the seventies. Johnny Carson is a good sport, taking all the fun in really good humor. It made me laugh, when he tickles Emu's tootsies (at 2:10) and Emu loves it initially, but then, as unpredictable as ever, decides he's had enough of it and goes for Johnny. :)
I also think it's really lovely to see Richard Pryor joining in the fun. I love it, when after Emu tries his coffee (at 2:53) , Rod warns Richard 'he doesn't like coffee' and Emu curls his upper lip at Richard (which was a key indication Emu was not happy!). The look on Richard's face as he half anticipates an attack is priceless. He knows what could be coming, heh-heh! Love it! :)

3:13 I love that thing with emu where he looks to right giving him Johnny the look like “what’s wrong with him he’s bonkers?”
    Emus so funny.

Well, in all fairness, Emu *did* wrinkle his beak at Pryor...which at least as often as not was a prelude to a violent attack! (Hull's appearances often became rather rough-and-tumble...)

When Johnny could even turn the ridiculous into a hilarious...and eventually treasured...moment of that evening or that time. He consistently set such an extremely high standard that talk show hosts in general (in spite of their adoring fans) have to admit to standing on that foundation in building their own careers...

I’m only 14 but I LOVE the 70s 80s shows, like they’re so simple and so funny and even tho I’m not of that generation I still find them hilarious and at Christmas I have to beg my parents to record Morecambe and Wise (they’re my favourite) and yeah it’s a little outdated and offensive but still it’s honestly amazing and I wish there were still comedians out there like that, like whenever I hear an ambulance I have to say ‘they’re not gonna sell any ice cream going that fast’ - it’s literally amazing I’m actually obsessed with these kind of programmes they’re just fun to watch cz it’s not dramatic or political it’s just funny and I live for it

  • @ryang790

I like Johnny Carson even more now, man what a good sport doing that. You wouldnt think Johnny would be the type to be able to do that to. Maybe Emu knew better than to attack Richard Pyror.. Billy Conolly was on parkinson during THAT episode when Emu went mad and attacked Parkinson. At the end Emu went to attack Billy and Billy said " i tell you what Emu, if u attack me, i'll break his arm and your bloody neck.." ! Emu left Billy alone.
