Dale, you're a rock star! I am about to publish my first book in the fall, and I must say, publishing an audio book on Audible scares me. There are such blatantly fraudulent practices going on by indie authors on Audible that it is impossible to believe that Amazon does not know about it. There are authors whose books ALL have HUNDREDS of reviews and EVERY single review has 5/5 stars in ALL categories...no exceptions. Worse, EVERY review was created by the account of someone who has reviewed no other audio books. None. There is something rotten and it ain't in Denmark. An honest content creator will never be able to compete.
The cream will always rise to the top. Over the past year, ACX has been working hard at snuffing out the bad actors. Hang in there. If you focus on your long game, you'll win in due time. I've been in this business since 2014 and have seen people like that come and go. Those people will go eventually once all the loopholes are closed up.
Great video Dale. My audio book has been on Findaway for awhile now. Sales have been terrible then again when it comes to marketing skills , I'm afraid the lights on but nobodys home. That aside though, as an author, it would be nice if Findaway had a feedback option to enable an audio books author to connect with their audience. Thanks again Dale, keep up the good work 👍 RBN (aka Ribban) Bookmark
What a great person!!!!! Thank you Dale!! I am getting ready to publish my first book next year and I am overwhelmed by all the information.... I really appreciate your videos and connections... will definitively put Findaway on top of my list after my ebook and paper book aggregators..... did you do videos about Reedsy? I feel it's also a good source. Thanks Guy
Oh, thanks. This is the first part of a 10-part series about Findaway Voices. I haven’t broken ground with Reedsy yet but we’ve had contact. They did a phenomenal guest blog post on my website. So, it’s gonna happen eventually.
More to come, this is a 10-part video series. I have two segments with Will, two with this Audio Mastering Specialist, 1 with their Audiobook Producer, 1 with their Audiobook Narrator match maker, 1 showing how to go from exclusive to nonexclusive on ACX to Findaway Voices, 1 to take nonexclusive to wide and 1 behind the scenes of Findaway Voices Headquarters.
You get them all. Each distribution avenue has a specific type of payout. Take a look at the service agreement with Findaway Voices. It shows what each avenue provides.
Well, they're both owned by Amazon and the audiobooks you publish using ACX will be distributed on Audible, so they're sort of the same, but not exactly.
I like Findaway Voices (and I've closely checked them all out) BUT if you aren't in the US, the financial part can be a nightmare, meaning having to file the correct IRS tax form. If you live in Canada, like I do, trying to decide which form is the right one for you is tough. Yes Canadians have to deal with the IRS and possibly have 30% of your royalties withheld. We have had two tax accountants helping out...one in Canada and one in the US...and even they are scratching their heads. IRS tax code is deeply complicated. ACX simply mails you a 1042-S at year end.. MUCH simpler.
@@DaleLRoberts I wanted to follow up and let you know that the folks at Findaway Voices were very helpful later by sending me some detailed information on why they insist on you filing IRS tax forms and even suggesting which one I should file in my case.
Print, ebook and audio all have different distribution rights that do not have any relation other than the contents. So, you can publish each without issue. So, no restrictions on your audiobook based on where your ebook is fulfilled.
🙏🙏🙏🙏 Hey Dale! Quick Question 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 This is regarding my audiobook on audible. My new bundle was published on the 9th of October and I started getting some sales since the 10th of October. It's been almost 7 days and 60 sales, still my book is last and is not ranking for any keyword. Even when I go to sort by bestselling, it is last. Generally after some initial sales, the books rank high in sort by best selling option. But I'm still last even after 7 days. I think my sales did not get registered on audible. Has this ever happened to you? What do you suggest I should do?
The problem is that my book should atleast rank in the sort by bestselling option. I have a couple other books ranking for the same keyword and they are selling much less than this one. But still, they are on top for the sort by bestselling option. This one is at the bottom. I think Audible didn't record my sales. But it has been 7 days since the sales started coming... I don't know what is happening...
NO! You definitely do NOT want to publish your audiobook elsewhere if you're exclusive to ACX. They've been heavy-handed over the past few years, so I wouldn't even try testing that. Keep in mind, if you were to use Findaway to distribute, they're going to ask if you published it elsewhere. If you answer falsely, I'm sure they won't like that and you could potentially get banned from both platforms.
@@DaleLRoberts I am well aware that Findaway does not claim exclusivity and I have not mentioned breaking any rules, in fact, I am aware of how both sites work. I just asked if this option that was mentioned to me was possible, i.e. being able to publish from Findaway to ACX while preserving 40% of royalties and paying 20% of the 40% to Findaway. I just wanted to make sure if this is possible or not, thanks
@@DaleLRoberts maybe I explained myself badly, I currently no longer have ACX. I would like to publish from Findaway on ACX but 25% royalties is very low, so someone told me there is a way to publish on ACX through Findaway and still get 40%. Seems unlikely, I wanted to know if you knew anything
No, you'll get 80% of the 25% cut from Amazon/Audible. You'll find all those details about what royalties you get for each avenue in the Findaway Voices Distribution Agreement. Access it in your dashboard under the My Account icon on the left (looks like a person). Scroll down to page 13 and you'll see the breakdown for all retailers. Amazon/Audible is at the bottom of the Retail section. Thanks for clarifying. No offense intended, because I get a LOT of folks who don't realize they're breaking rules. I'd rather set you straight than have you wander into dangerous territory then blame me for directing you there. haha Make sense?
This depends on what you consider expensive. I cover their rates somewhat and what I felt is missing in this video: th-cam.com/video/AwUP7pJYWGI/w-d-xo.html I'll be showing how to take an exclusive ACX title to non-exclusive this week. You can essentially publish your title through ACX and use their pool of talent. Negotiate the PFH you want, get the quality narrator you need and publish wide as possible by using all avenues.
Awesome! I’m so glad you found value. I just released the second part of this interview today. Did you see it? th-cam.com/video/kjQ0gxrOmbY/w-d-xo.html

If I self published a print book through KDP, can I do the audiobook version through Findaway or am I restricted to someone specific?
Print, ebook and audio all have different distribution rights that do not have any relation other than the contents. So, you can publish each without issue. So, no restrictions on your audiobook based on where your ebook is fulfilled.
Remember that royalty share with a narrator is not an option unless you can prove massive sales of your ebook upfront.

It’s quite possible the sales came through the other 2 avenues of Amazon or even Apple. This might explain your audiobook’s lack of movement.

Interesting.. but what conclusion? To earn more - publish new books exclusively to ACX or go wild with Findaway Voices? Why?
Staying exclusive to ACX doesn’t always equate to more earnings. In fact, I know of a few authors who’ve gone wide and opened up more earnings.
