It's also fairly rare to see the French represented in a WWI movie made outside of France. Despite the French representing roughly 85% of the western front in WWI, the Allies are usually shown from the perspective of the British or even the Americans( it's even rarer to see the Russians, the italians and the Romanians- but theyre on different fronts). The crazy losses sufferred here explains why the French would be so unwilling to fight 22 years later. So few Young Frenchmen of 1910's lived on to become fathers that French mentalities evolved to be defensive, Build walls, fortifications, Tanks with loads of armour and small crews, don't do any ambitious attacks, anything to spare lives.
It's ironic because back then, in any form of media representing WWI in Germany (films, books, etc), the French are always depicted as the main enemy force, and rightly so.
@levy WW1 France did hold their own. And paid a heavy price. However it can be argued that France and Russia had no place to declare on Germany. Austria Hungary vs the Serbs was an internal conflict Russia had no reason to get involved in other than “they must defend all Slavs.” Which was never a status for them to self appoint. France used the opportunity to take Germany’s colonies in Africa, and knock them down a peg. Which is why the signed with Russia. I admire France’s fight, they had the best military in Europe at the time. But the Versailles Treaty was over the top and France got was coming to them in WW2. Germany steam rolling France under Hitler was all France’s fault.
@@datboi9648 It was Germany who declared war on France in 1914, therefore Germany had absolutely no right to complain that the Versailles treaty was too harsh especially after the ridiculously harsh terms imposed on the French at Frankfurt in 1871 and the Russians at Brest-Litovsk in 1918. The reason why Germany’s economy suffered so much in the 20’s from Hyperinflation was nothing to do with the terms of the treaty itself, but poor German financial planning during the war that had amassed in the form of national state debt. Hitler used this as a scapegoat to blame the French and to gain support from Germans. To say France got what they deserved in 1940 is foolish. Germany would not have been faced with these conditions if they didn’t go around invading neighbouring countries and flattening them to the ground. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

With the end battle, in reality it was usually the other way around. On November 11th 1918 the Germans remained on the defensive. It was the French, British and American generals who sent their men on attacks, hours or minutes before the end of the war. Many officers ignored those kind of orders, but many also didn't, resulting in 2,738 men dying in the morning hours of November 11th.

My great grandfather was there. He never allowed anyone to call it a war, because a war is fought by civilized men with rules of engagement. World War 1 is an amazing time to portray because there were no good or bad sides...everyone was fighting for survival...and the arrogant nations leading their men and boys to their deaths were all complacent. As someone who's father's side is Italian...and who's mother's side is German and French...it pains me to see so much needless loss of life. And the failure of the German command to protect their soldiers was a breeding ground for hate that led to Hitler's rise. So many dominoes...so many tiny things leading to...this. It's disgusting.
16:46 this entire scene between these 2 absolutely destroyed me and had me crying and shaking. its the no.1 reason why i cannot watch this great tough movie a second time..
I've always loved the original version (based on the classic novel) from 1930, which is imo one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made (I'd even seen the tv-movie from the late 1970s, with my grandmother. It's not as great, but still impressive, can't really remember that much, besides its great cast, and Paul carrying Kat), but this version also blew me away. Greetings from The Netherlands. I've wonder if you and your dad ever saw ''Un Prophète'' (2009), one of the best prison & (especially) gangster movies ever made.
The generals and politicians never face the enemy or muck around in the trenches. It’s easy to send others sons and fathers when you rule from an ivory tower.
Many thanks for your good comments, assessments and views on this film. As a German, I am very proud that this film has been so well received around the world. I read Erich Maria Remarque's novel many times. The german nazis had burned the books of him at the time. This testifies to the explosive power and message of this novel. I was very moved by the novel and the film. The message is that something like this should never happen again from Germany. Believe me, we Germans really understood this and we will do all what we can that never history can ever repeat. Best regards from Berlin to you and your dad......Oliver
There is a german made WW2 movie called Stalingrad. It is one of (if not) the most acurate ww2 movies that i know. It think you can even watch it for free on TH-cam with subtitles.
I have in my possession two newspapers from 11 November 1918…Both only tell of the German’s signing the armistice while failing to mention the thousands of casualties taken in the last hours of the war. The greatest mistake was to have it end at 11 AM instead of at midnight on the 11th due to the careless generals only interested in their own glory. I’m the final 60 seconds over 3,000 men died for nothing at all…The last being an American who died at 10:59:30…he had 30 seconds to safely go home.
The last soldier to die in WWI was an American who charged a German position at 10:59. Thousands of troops died in the last 6 hours after the signing but before the ceasefire.
Thank you for this reaction. I really appreciate your emotional response and I am glad that it is a sad response. This is a movie about war that should fill us with anger, horror and at the end with grief and sadness. I was with you an your emotional journey the whole time. The underlying novel by Erich Marie remark by the same title was standard input school curriculum back in Germany where I am from. If that movie impressed you you should read the book. It had a lasting impact on my life … in a good way. Kind regards
Erich Ludendorff actually played a part in the movement the Hitler was in and was involved in the Beer Hall putsch attempt. (I’m not sure he would be considered a Nazi precisely, but in the Volkisch movement which is similair) He was is also one of the propagators of the stabbed-in-the-back myth that the military hadn’t actually lost and that the politician s signed for peace in treachery. He himself had recognized the military situation would fail and encouraged the politicians to sue for peace previously….
i strongly recommend das boot from wolfgang petersen, directors cut! it was alredy a classic when it came out 1981. excellent reaction by the way. and do read the book by erich maria remarque. there are topics in the book the movie does not include unfortunatelly.
Recomend 1960s English/French movie King of Hearts , it's is ww1 but in comical and thinking way. Plot : After all civilians left french town for safety, patients from insane asylum came out and took over the town. 😅
Many of the soldiers who died on the 11th of November, 1918 had the dates on their graves changed to the 10th because the governments of the countries involved thought it was humiliating that people died on the last day
Nice reaction. Thumbs up! :) The mad general and his last attack were both pure fiction. The general never existed. But something similar in a bigger scale was officially planned by the German Navy. They were given the order in the last second of the war to attack the British sea blockade (that was at large parts responsible for the lack of food and clothing in WWI-Germany and at the German side of the front). That planned attack was an insane suicide plan and everybody knew it. Therefore the sailors made a revolution, the Emperor (Kaiser) had to abandon the throne and the German Weimar Republic was born. I agree with the son in this reaction: It would have been a better film if Kat would have died like he died in the book and the two older movie versions. That farm-stealing thing and the death of Kat in that way were ridiculous. I don't like the whole new thing with the mad general and the last minute attack, either. All that was much better solved in the book and the two older movie versions. Everybody still dies there...but in a much more plausible way in the framework of an anti-war movie and historical accuracy. This movie isn't bad, but the older movies and the book had much better story lines and elements. Even the end happens in much better and more grimm way in the book and the title of book and movie is making much more sense in connection with the end in the book and the older movies. But again: This movie is a good movie and did some very own things that added to the story, that were not in the book and the older movies. So it's a mixed bag but it's a good movie. I'm recommending to react to "Das Boot". There are several versions of it. Take at minimum the Directors Cut. If possible, take the even longer TV-miniseries version. And take the German language option with subtitles. Greetings Mega
In the end the kid takes the tissue but forgets to collect Pauls Dogtag.. So his mother will never know where when and how. It will just be another one of those endless nameless graves..
I think it would have been even better if the movie ended before the ending of the war and we see Paul’s uniform get renewed and then worn by another soldier who points his name tag out
You don't zig zag if you're getting shot at. It'll just make you slower. The best thing to do, if you have no cover, is put as much distance between you and your attacker as quickly as possible.
@@dankengine5304 minimizing the time you're exposed is the important part. Like you said you can't outrun a bullet and they have a good chance of hitting you either way you move but getting to cover faster or getting further away where it's harder to hit you will give you a better chance of survival than running in some pattern.
When its a film about German soldiers its anti war but when its a film abut the British army like 1917 or Dunkirk its a film about the heroic British soldier.
It would be difficult to make a movie following German soldiers in ww2, as opposed to Dunkirk, obviously. There are anti war movies from an American and British perspective. You are making vague statements and trying to allude to something but does it really surprise you that there aren’t many films depriving Germans in a positive light in ww2? I think Germany in ww1 gets linked too strongly to Nazi Germany in the peoples heads sure. Who makes more movies? Germans or Americans/British? They alone will influence the perspectives of what audiences will expect to see.
@22grena sur l'héroïsme des soldats britanniques😂 lol réviser vos cours d'histoire quand les Allemands sont passés vous avez fui comme des gros lâche😅 d'où l'expression en France "filet en anglaise"
this is a great movie but the end kinda goes away from what the name of the movie means. all quiet on the western front, the meaning of the name is that it's just another day, nothing new. and it's during one of these days that the main character should have died, ending with a report coming into the headquarters, all quiet on the western front, nothing new, just more of the same.
The German soldiers were only given one round of ammunition each, because their superiors knew they would not live long enough to use more than one round of ammunition.
15:16 - The mass use of flamethrowers simply didn't happen, they were used to clear out bunkers, not pointlessly kill injured soldiers. You would never have more than one or two units in any raiding party. This entire scene is complete nonsense, and cinematic slander against the french soldiers. Disgraceful. German directors tend to do this sort of thing quite often, as if to say 'Look, the 'good guys' were just as bad as us!'.
The young dude acting like he hasn’t seen it, commenting to his dad about what’s happening next. Also, this is World War One guys. You guys got your timelines wrong at the start. But you’re forgiven😂
I think the allied forces attacked the German lines before the 11am deadline . Totally pointless waste of human life . Battle of Somme , yupes ,the horror of war. .
Yet, a majority of the German people believed that they would have won had the army not been sold out by the civilian government and forcing a surrender. Within a bare few years, the German army was being reconstituted clandestinely, and by 1938 Germany was already embarked on its second attempt to conquer all of Europe. It was about 20 years, and while the French had had enough, the Germans had not, and the sons and nephews of these men gladly went off to war again.
Also the part where they just throw the young kids into war, the director of the movie is too lazy to do the training part, so they just not included it which makes people like you very confused whether they just throw untrained men into the war or not
We’re aware that they’re trained, but we kinda got the impression that they glorified war to these young boys and gave them the wrong picture, totally opposite from the horrific reality
“A soldier of the European armies is a man who lives in captivity of his enemies, hypnotized by them, working for them for a poor wage and a bad piece of bread. At the same time, soldiers are people whose fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters work and pay huge taxes in order to clothe, arm and feed their children and brothers during their service in the army. And when it becomes so hard for fathers and brothers to live that they "rebel" against their ancestral class enemies, soldiers are obliged to shoot at "rebels". They shoot, - so deep is the degree of idiocy to which they have been fooled.”
The endings to the mist and this are so different. One has real life experiences that only a few can speak about, and the other has BUGS that come to town in a mist. Come on. React to ‘Saving Private Ryan’ or ‘The Thin Red Line’ for more education on Film and War
Are you serious? The 1979 film is a cheap TV production. The sound in this TV film is atrociously bad. The acting is not up to par either, the characters are partly overdrawn. What particularly bothers me is the portrayal of Kat, who is 40 years old in the novel, which was the maximum for a front-line soldier in this war. It is absolutely ridiculous to have him portrayed by a 62-year-old Borgnine. Such an old man would not have survived a week on that brutal front.

And the failure of the German command to protect their soldiers was a breeding ground for hate that led to Hitler's rise. So many dominoes...so many tiny things leading to...this. It's disgusting.
What I Iove about the movie: there is no glory in war, though everyone tells you "you'll be a proud hero"
I love that father and son do this video together.
You guys really need to see the 1981 Das Boot. especially the directors cut that is an absolutely brilliant anti-war film
Love your reactions.
As you are reacting to german anti war movies like this and Downfall, would you consider reacting to "Das Boot"?
A true classic
Great reaction again guys! Cheers from Germany!
You guys have good and righteous hearts, God bless you.🙏
The last soldier to die in WWI was an American who charged a German position at 10:59. Thousands of troops died in the last 6 hours after the signing but before the ceasefire.
It is a masterpiece. I really enjoyed watching your video with your Father, thank you for this!
Great Reaction video. Much love to you and your Father. Greetings from Germany. ❤
I love your channel. It gives me a different perspective, but also confirms what I already knew - we are all the same 👍 from 5000 miles away
Thats truly an Anti-War Movie, crazy good
Erich Ludendorff actually played a part in the movement the Hitler was in and was involved in the Beer Hall putsch attempt. (I’m not sure he would be considered a Nazi precisely, but in the Volkisch movement which is similair)
He was is also one of the propagators of the stabbed-in-the-back myth that the military hadn’t actually lost and that the politician s signed for peace in treachery. He himself had recognized the military situation would fail and encouraged the politicians to sue for peace previously….
I hope it will win lots of oscars
It’s already a nomine
Amazing reaction video I always, wanted to see a reaction to this movie 😌
i strongly recommend das boot from wolfgang petersen, directors cut! it was alredy a classic when it came out 1981.
excellent reaction by the way. and do read the book by erich maria remarque. there are topics in the book the movie does not include unfortunatelly.
The injustice at the end broke my heart
“1917” is another amazing WWI film that I think you would really enjoy.
Glad you watched it in German so many don't, mistake!
Recomend 1960s English/French movie King of Hearts ,
it's is ww1 but in comical and thinking way. Plot : After all civilians left french town for safety, patients from insane asylum came out and took over the town. 😅
Many of the soldiers who died on the 11th of November, 1918 had the dates on their graves changed to the 10th because the governments of the countries involved thought it was humiliating that people died on the last day
Read what happened Matthias Erzberger ( Daniel Bruhl's character). So sad. He brought peace and was branded a traitor.
First time i ever heard someone say general Duval, respect to pops
There's a highly-regarded 1979 TV movie version in English that's also very worth seeing, and significantly different to this version.
Nice reaction. Thumbs up! :)
The mad general and his last attack were both pure fiction.
I agree with the son in this reaction:
It would have been a better film if Kat would have died like he died in the book and the two older movie versions.
Greetings
Mega
Your dad is incredibly wise.
If you guys like war movies, I recommend Braveheart. About the true person William Wallace and Scotland’s battle for freedom.
'Is that the guy from Inglorious Basterds?'
Ten minutes later...
'Must be historically accurate; you can't play with this stuff!'
🤔🙄🤣
In the end the kid takes the tissue but forgets to collect Pauls Dogtag.. So his mother will never know where when and how. It will just be another one of those endless nameless graves..
Best anti war movie ever made!
I think it would have been even better if the movie ended before the ending of the war and we see Paul’s uniform get renewed and then worn by another soldier who points his name tag out
great work, love your channel
The best reaction on youtube
Big bowl of pomegranate 👍🏻👌🏼
You don't zig zag if you're getting shot at. It'll just make you slower. The best thing to do, if you have no cover, is put as much distance between you and your attacker as quickly as possible.
Leading shots is much harder. Who cares if you're going slower? You can't outrun a bullet.
What’re ya gonna do? :(
@@myegyptiandadreacts4824 Be aware of the propaganda and who is behind it and why
Trust me I'm very very aware, especially nowadays
And the same thing is going on right now.
Nothing like watching an anti-war film with your father.
Great reaction, amazing movie , both wars are tragic
this is a great movie but the end kinda goes away from what the name of the movie means. all quiet on the western front, the meaning of the name is that it's just another day, nothing new. and it's during one of these days that the main character should have died, ending with a report coming into the headquarters, all quiet on the western front, nothing new, just more of the same.
if you haven't watched the original 1930 movie, by all means watch it! it's outstanding, and I don't think any remake is better.
I loved the emotions bravo
Check out 1917 and still waiting for Braveheart .. 2 really good movies.. and also Gladiator is really good and 3 : 10 to YUMA ( 2007 version )
The German soldiers were only given one round of ammunition each, because their superiors knew they would not live long enough to use more than one round of ammunition.
Wenn ich vor 100 Jahren geboren wäre hätte ich kämpfen müssen.
This movie( a Masterpiece ) is a light vesion of war but it gives us i little imagination of what war is.
The young dude acting like he hasn’t seen it, commenting to his dad about what’s happening next. Also, this is World War One guys. You guys got your timelines wrong at the start. But you’re forgiven😂
I think you might have a similar reaction after watching Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory.
He got PTSD from.the war so he thought he only had one thing towards to commit suicide.
I think the allied forces attacked the German lines before the 11am deadline . Totally pointless waste of human life . Battle of Somme , yupes ,the horror of war. .
The main actor is Austrian
Yet, a majority of the German people believed that they would have won had the army not been sold out by the civilian government and forcing a surrender. Within a bare few years, the German army was being reconstituted clandestinely, and by 1938 Germany was already embarked on its second attempt to conquer all of Europe. It was about 20 years, and while the French had had enough, the Germans had not, and the sons and nephews of these men gladly went off to war again.
Their "Lebensraum" concept unfortunately has not died in WWI.
@@bambina5604 lol, what??
@@prettyokandy230 Wikipedia will help you
@@bambina5604 i doubt it tbh, but what should i search for?
@@bambina5604 w8 my bad, i misread. i thought you said their lebensraum concept didn't die after ww2 instead of 1... my bad, sorry.
Reaction trilogy Of Star Wars Movie Please
We’ll certainly get there. We’ll be done evil dead remake then hobbit trilogy first then Star Wars trilogy for sure
And it was all for nothing.
Also the part where they just throw the young kids into war, the director of the movie is too lazy to do the training part, so they just not included it which makes people like you very confused whether they just throw untrained men into the war or not
Lazy?
We’re aware that they’re trained, but we kinda got the impression that they glorified war to these young boys and gave them the wrong picture, totally opposite from the horrific reality
@@myegyptiandadreacts4824 true
Plz react to Braveheart
أنا من مصر 😂
Great reaction guys! Keep up the good work
They made the enemy the French.
Would have been a much better film the enemy was the English or, God forbid, we Americans.
Why does Egyptian dad sit like that? He's gonna mess his back up. Tell him to do yoga.
Lol this made me laugh. I’ll be sure to tell him
Mind your own sanctimonious business, y@nk 🙄
What a weird comment lol
"Gotta blur this out..." wouldve been a more fitting title. I tried to watch...and gave up. Good luck.
A bit impatient aren’t we? 😂
Watch the 1979 version, it's much better.
People always give an extra dose of praise to older versions of any production
