- This time we pay a visit to Kagoshima Shrine to speak with Chief Priest Yamashita Tsuyoshi.
Kagoshima Shrine is one of the oldest in the Kagoshima region with a history of over 1,300 years.
Yamashita is the third generation of his family to work as the Chief Priest of the shrine, and is also one of Japan's most accomplished players of Satsuma Biwa.
Satsuma Biwa is a stringed, lute like instrument that was loved by the samurai of the Satsuma domain, and formed part of their education as warriors.
This time we learn about the origin of the shrine, how Satsuma Biwa was developed, and about the mindset and culture of some of Japan's most famous warriors - the samurai of Satsuma.
To find out more about the samurai of Satsuma, take a look at the Samurai of Culture website below.

Amazing!!!
As some one who was raised in Taniyama-cho, Kagoma, thank you for your vlogs.
What a treasure!
Such high quality production and good content, I am soo sad it doesn't get more recognition.
Indeed, it is a shame...but things take time and hopefully more will come to see such goodness as time passes.
When he said only 20 people were practicing Satsuma Biwa, that broke my heart. I hope more people see this video and look to learn it!
Thank you for sharing Satsuma Biwa with all of us :) I'm so curious if sensei would teach anyone outside of Japan? I would love to seriously study biwa someday!
Sugei satsuma biwa sensei! I wish to learn, arigato gozaimasu ⛩️🙏😎
Anyone came after seeing Demon Slayer?
Yes
Yes, Nakime the biwa demon.
no.
From F/GO actually, was listening to Komahime play her biwa.
no i came for the mimic
Does Yamashita san have an album or songs online to listen to? Such beautiful and powerful music. Sounds ancient.
I love the spaces in between the notes and words, those pauses sort of give me a moment to accept what has been played whilst prepearing me for the next note...the next "drop" to use a word from my own Junglist culture...and because of the simplicity and that space I am given, my spine tingles each time, even though I have no understanding of the words (I have no ear for language at all, I can barely speak my own language, never mind learn anothers, despite the efforts) I am moved in some way. Perhaps the fact that I cannot understand the words gives my mind a chance to put my own feelings, yuk, how self obsessed I can be! But still ...I can only thank the players with sincerity.
かっ、、かっこいい…
In an alternative reality I may have been the son of a Japanese shinto priest instead of the son of an American cult elder...i hope..?
The Bible has incredible scientific accuracy like round Earth hanging on nothing. Plus, jet streams, man from soil and much more.
