    The Carrera 4 I previously owned had an amazing feeling while you were into a turn and stepped into the throttle. You could actually feel the front wheels bear down and pull you through the turn. Loved the way that car pulled onto highway ramps.

    Nice comparison. 95% of the discussion I see on Porsche 2ws vs. awd centers on weather. Unless you're buying a Porsche specifically to drive in snowy conditions climbing hills, weather matters very little. Awd vs. 2wd is a different driving experience. I think you described it very well: 2wd gives you a loose back end when you want it. Awd will pull you around corners and is generally "safer" in that it's much harder to do something stupid with the back end. Of course, some of us like to do stupid (aka fun) stuff with our cars.
    I have a preference for awd because I like the confidence it brings. For me at higher speed awd just corners better. You could argue that it's a skill issue on my part. There's a reason the 911 turbos are awd.

    I did not know that the 4s had a wider body. You learn something everyday, except when you dont.

    • @kabob21
      @kabob21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because it's not much wider than the C2 body with the 997 and 991 models. On the 996, the 4S was significantly wider and looked much nicer than the C2 of that generation.

      GTS is wide body

  • @venom5809
    @venom5809 7 ปีที่แล้ว +127

    Honestly the widebody is worth the money, it looks a lot better. Still it would be great if you could completely disengage AWD and make it RWD when you wanted, surprised Porsche didn't make that a $10,000 option knowing them.

      venom5809 The GTS is RWD with 4S widebody.

    • @venom5809
      @venom5809 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Steel86Curtain, which is still not AWD which you would want if you lived in an area with winter weather and you drove your 911 in those conditions like Nick does, hence why I said it would be great if you could disengage it when you didn't need it.

    • @mmmakeee
      @mmmakeee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But with that feature, you'd always have the extra weight with you. Also, the weight distribution would be different which could affect the "911 experience".

      Try driving both, the 4S doesn't take away any fun, and only when I'm basically in "shit my pants I'm going to crash" mode does the AWD pull me out of it. Maybe I'm getting old like Nick, but I think it's ok for it to save me from a crash while allowing me to at least attempt the crash. ;-)

    An option to disable AWD would be wonderful and, as the torque split rear to front is already electronically controlled, it shouldn't be that difficult to implement. Of course, there are other factors that prevent it.

    I propose a test under snowy conditions with the 911 AWD vs 911 RWD with the same snow tires ;) Standard 911s are no bad winter cars concerning the high weight in the back. You know it :) When you curve a bit too hard the RWD will reach the traction limits earlier but on a straight hill road the differences are quite small.

  • @thefridgeman

    3:04 The larger gas tank is due to the extra 4cm space robbed from the trunk by the front drive. On top of it the tank can be made larger
    The larger rear body of the "4" is also less aero at high speeds, thus the lower max velocity.
    The sills on the "4" minimize the disturbance in the air flow caused by the wider rear body. I guess it better channels the side flow and stops it from getting under the car at the rear (in front of the rear wheels) and generate high speed lift at the back axle.

    Nick, you make it sound like the AWD is 100% safe (and boring) - whereas on slippery roads (even just rain) it can at times be pretty challenging to keep the car straight (even without driving like a complete fool). Especially because of the very wide tyres.

    I have a 2013 991 C4S. It was the wider body and the light bar that put it over the top for me, lookswise. I’d also add that here in Connecticut the 4WD with the stock tires is not very good in the snow. However, with OZ 19” wheels and slightly more narrow snow tires the car is an absolute blast in the white stuff!

    Isn't torque steer what you get in front wheel drive cars - when the power going through the front wheels affects the steering inputs? Never heard it used to describe a cornering technique in a rwd car.

    • @NickMurray
      @NickMurray  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same principle in a way, as too much power is applied to the rear wheels you get over steer and you can steer the car with power instead of steering input

    • @kabob21
      @kabob21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You guys are confusing torque steer (what Craig is saying) with throttle steering (what Nick's saying.) Those are two completely different principles.

    • @craigyirush3492
      @craigyirush3492 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What you are referring to is power oversteer, not torque steer, which, as I said above, is the term used for FWD cars when the engine's torque interferes with the steering inputs. This is not at all the same thing as power oversteer which can, used judiciously, help a car turn into a corner.

    I've seen people drifting their awd cars so I am thinking that it is still possible to drift the 4S but maybe harder to do. The current 4S has about 50bhp more than the 2 also so you aren't just paying for awd but better engine performance that brings the two within 0.1sec at 0-60mph.

    I had no idea there were so many aesthetic differences. Very informative, and personally, I support the 4s. I have ultimately found that one can get out of a corner a quantifiably faster with AWD on a tight and technical course in the dry, and the advantages seem exponential in wet and cold climates due to the traction advantage when introducing some over-steer. I'm also not sure I've met a car that wouldn't go sideways, but I understand that's a lot of car ($) to throw around, and frankly, its just nice to look at; Very nice to look at; Very, very nice to look at. Thanks for the video, Nick!

At Audi, BMW, and MB people dress really nice... like saying I'm successful and buying a nice car to show it. At the Porsche dealer I see lots of men in t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers or sandles. Apparently when you're buying a "dream car" you dress like you're on vacation living the good life. ☺

    Nick, you should REALLY do a comparo between your car and 2016+ Jaguar F Type R. I own a 2016 (AWD, obviously) and surely I am very biased, but I love the 911s and these cars compete more or less directly with each other. I know you like the V6 F Type S and trust me, the difference between that model and the R is YUUUUGE. Anyway, please consider and thanks in advance! P.S. There was a trick in older '4' models where you could engage the park brake and decouple the front drive shaft, well I have been told, never actually seen it done. These days no such luck.

      Stan Chase I know people who disconnect their AWD Volvo XC driveshafts during summer so their cars are FWD.
      911s have the engine in the back so turning AWD in RWD is so dumb idea that it may work but no one would or should do it in a new car full of electronics. But funny concept.

    Only the C2S has the option of the extra large 90L tank. This is a very, very nice option for high-speed touring on the German autobahn. Of course, if you only go back and forth to Starbucks like Nick does you can buy the C4S.

    hi nick, i was worried when i choose my new porsche (i had one of the first models cayman s), i choose the 991.2 gts. I was worried because i like track days (i live in italy and go around monza, imola, vallelunga and mugello) and thought about something happening on old awd 911: the understeer in the exit phase of the turn. I said maybe new models don't have that problem any more...But i have chosen the nornal 911 gts...with the extra money spared i put the rear axle steering and pdk...i was worried about losing that beautiful oversteer in the turn. I'm happy to know by an awd owner the pro and cons, i think i did the best chose for me(not so much rain and snow around where i live). thk you so much for your informative videos

    • @johnwhodat8135
      @johnwhodat8135 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Bailey, they only stretched out the wheel arch on wide body like .75 inch on each side. I have a 991.1 c2s and looking at the car from the rear slightly kneeling to driver sitting hight its pretty wide. so subtle it's hard to tell unless comparing the two cars side by side.

    • @thomasbailey4139
      @thomasbailey4139 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Whodat maybe the tires/wheels nick has on his car are wider in the rear?

    • @johnwhodat8135
      @johnwhodat8135 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Bailey ...4s has tire width of 305 in the rear. I have c2s and just installed 305 in the rear, came with 295.

    Hi Nick, What is the difference with the traction control off? We had the 996 Turbo out on a frozen lake and it was very different with the traction control off - way more fun and would four-wheel drift beautifully! With it on it really had it's head down and was very safe and directed (and slow). Oh, the 3.2 is a hoot in the snow ;) Franny

    • @NickMurray
      @NickMurray  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Franny, there are 3 traction control settings in these models, full nanny which lets you get a little sideways before fixing the problem for you, Limited stability system which is pretty much off but will step in if you are completely losing control, and full off. Interestingly full off will still intervene in certain circumstances when the system is sure you will die without it stepping in.

    4WD is heavier, most importantly. Also, 4WD saps more power due to drivetrain loss than C2S.

    • @Scorpio1075
      @Scorpio1075 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KLRGT500KR, but the AWD is faster due to increased traction.

    • @KLRGT500KR

      Only to 60 mph. The RWD is quicker at higher speeds.

    • @Scorpio1075
      @Scorpio1075 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard the AWD is faster on the track too. More stable in the turns so it carries higher speeds and can put the power down sooner. I'd love the see a Motor Trend Head 2 Head of the 911 C2 and 911 C4.
      Being honest, I'd never track a new 911... I don't have that kind of money to piss away if something went wrong. IF I was going for speed the new Camaro ZL1 would be on my shopping list, or even the SS 1LE.

    • @NickMurray

      I don't know, for the 991.1 models the C4S has held up better than the C2S because of higher demand but only time will tell.

    We've had horrendous rains this year in the Bay Area and I can't tell you how many times my 911 rear-end has slipped out from under me... specially since I wasn't really pushing it... I wish I had the 4S... Considering how many times I''ll push it on purpose to jut regular driving... really wish I had the 4S...
