      Hi Trishna,
      You can remove duplicates with a Query. I don't have a video on that, but this link should help you out. Thank you for watching:

    Do the primary keys have to be the same? I’m trying to develop a training database where I can track which employee has training on what document. Couldn’t create the sub form from the two tables. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I need to be able to input that more than 1 employee could have trained on the same document. Any pointers? Any help is appreciated!

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alice,
      No they do not have to be the same. In fact, most tables won't contain the same primary key. Here is a video I created a while back on subforms, I hope it helps you out:

    So, a primary key is used to prevent duplicate information in a table?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cameron,
      Exactly, if you try to enter a duplicate value in the primary key field, it will not allow you to add that record.

    I was wondering how to make the primary key an autonumber when data is already input into it.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Charli,
      This is a good question. I'd recommend creating a new field, using the autonumber field style. Then go to the design tab, and switch that field to your primary key. From there, it won't peg the initial field as the primary field key any longer. I hope this makes sense.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rk9,
      The tables in my example are from a database I created. You will need to create your own tables in order to create primary keys within them. Thank you for watching!

    Actually I do have another question. What the hell is the point of Access anyways? What can it do easier that excel can’t?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, I explain this to my students every semester. Excel is more of a visual program than Access and it's designed primary for calculations and analysis. Although you can store large amounts of data on Excel, it is not really designed for maintaining the data between multiple spreadsheets. Access is better at maintaining the integrity between multiple sheets, where Excel is better at analyzing complex numerical data.
      For example, if I had a database of 30,000 students who attend my school, and I needed multiple tables to organize student data, well Access would be a better program for that because I can easily run powerful queries to return only the data that I need. Sure, I could do this in Excel, but I'd have to create multiple references between sheets, and I'd have to spend much more time filtering and unfiltering specific results. In short, Access is primarily designed to analyze massive amounts of text data, while Excel is best for numerical functions and analysis.

    • @coltonostermeyer3126
      @coltonostermeyer3126 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thank you. Sometimes I just like to know why I have these assignments and after using access I was having trouble finding a meaningful use for it but now I know.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am glad you want to know why. Just think to use Access if you have a large amount of data that is mostly text, not too many calculation.
