  • The World Bank has approved three new loan requests, amounting to $1.57 billion, to support Nigeria in key areas of development. The financial package aims to bolster the nation’s human capital by improving health services for women, children, and adolescents, while also addressing the challenges posed by climate change, such as floods and drought.
According to a statement released on Monday, the funds will aid the Nigerian government in strengthening dam safety and enhancing irrigation systems to build resilience against the effects of climate change.
The statement reads, "The World Bank has today approved three operations for a total of $1.57 billion to support the Government of Nigeria in strengthening human capital through better health for women, children, and adolescents, as well as building resilience to climate-related issues like floods and droughts by improving dam safety and irrigation.”
The new financing package includes $500 million aimed at addressing governance challenges that have hindered the effective delivery of education and healthcare services. An additional $570 million has been allocated to the Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Programme, and $500 million will fund the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project (SPIN).
The combined efforts of the HOPE-GOV and HOPE-PHC programs are expected to enhance service delivery in Nigeria’s basic education and primary healthcare sectors, both of which are vital to the nation’s human capital development.
Meanwhile, the SPIN project is designed to improve dam safety and manage water resources more effectively for hydropower and irrigation in select areas of Nigeria.
“The HOPE-GOV program will address governance weaknesses in the systems and procedures of the government, particularly in two critical human development sectors: basic education and primary healthcare,” the statement further noted.
The World Bank’s approval, granted on September 26, 2024, underscores the institution’s continued commitment to supporting Nigeria's efforts in human capital development and climate resilience.
