  • When the SARB opened its doors on 30 June 1921, the currency system in use was British ‒ consisting of pennies, shillings and pounds. The pound comprised 20 shillings, while one shilling was made up of 12 pennies, and one penny could be subdivided into two half pennies or four farthings (quarter pennies).
    In May 1961, South Africa exited the Commonwealth and became the Republic of South Africa ‒ and changed its currency to the rand, and later adopted the decimal system.
