I didn't think it possible, with the other actors casted, but I just watched the first part och Henry IV, and Simon Russel Beale's "Falstaff" just steals the show... Amazing!
I have long enjoyed Shakespeare's plays. The Hollow Crown made me fall in love with the words, the emotions. Just the best Shakespeare I've ever seen. Looking forward to the next series. Can't come soon enough!
I haven't had the privilege of seeing Simon Russel-Beale on stage, but, when I hear his voice, I just melt...
The adaptation of Henry IV I and II was astonishingly good. In my opinion the adaptations brought out the underlying themes of the plays like no other version I have seen. There were so many good actors. My favourite scene though was where Falstaff and Justice Shallow sit by the fire and reminisce - "We have heard the chimes at midnight". Beale's expressions are marvelous and David Bamber as Shallow is a tour de force.
The second series of The Hollow Crown was not as good. Admittedly Herny VI (Parts I, II and III) are not the easiest of plays to bring to life. Benedict Bumberbatch as Richard III I thought missed the mark, especially with the silly gesture of tapping his fingers all the time.
There was believe it or not an attempt to adapt the two parts of Henry IV into an hour radio play (part of a Shakespearian radio series) with Humphrey Bogart (!) as Hotspur, Walter Huston as King Henry, and Walter Connelly as Falstaff!

The 'unexamined life' is attributed to Socrates at his trial. I was moved by Simon talking about it.
