Is This Last Job Fit for the Chainsaw? - Episode 260 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • Let's get this cutwater (stem or bow of the boat) shaped up, shall we? Plus, more 12 volt electrical work, the worm shoe is installed, the last of the pitch repairs on the deck are carried out, we get a varnish and finish report from Ross and George, and the biggest visual progress possibly of them all: the beautiful toe rails are installed.
Subscribe to Bob’s channel for updates about the progress on the dinghy: / @theartofboatbuilding
You might remember the bronze brackets for the toe rails being fabricated by MS Fabrication of Dorchester, Massachusetts: Evan cut each piece with his waterjet machine, and Steve welded them together. They've since been bolted to the deck, waiting for these long pieces of oak to be bolted to them.
To check out what our capable and informative friend Madison does when she's not helping us with our 12 volt electrical system, visit her channel here: / thedigitalmermaid

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

*- I forget which video it was a year ago or so, where Steve detailed that Alex and he are long time friends who planned to do this, but {broadly, if I remember correctly} Alex had new inspirations and a family to consider so they ended their working/build partnership.*

The poor shavings and sawdust that DID NOT get to sail the world. The boat burning down would not suck. Nor would it be catastrophic. Or terrible. Or horrific. There has to be a better word. Apocalyptic?! The amount of time spent on A2A??? Burning it down?? That's an apocalypse. The amount of fire safety comments I've made over the years and you've kept her safe! KEEP GOING!! We're almost there! FANTASTIC video!! 💯❤️❤️

Almost as a joke to the "build a boat in a day" line, after Arabella is finished to where she is ready to sail, take and do a edited 24 hour video from start to finish (I believe the start would be the lead keel being poured) just as a marker and a challenge for those that have watched through the whole to see if they remember all that happened. Could hide some Easter egg things for people to find.

When you took the Chain Saw to it, I fully expected it to turn into a snake complete with scales and a snake's head Masthead. With a set of rattles at the stern on the top of the rudder.
If a glue up fails at the joint as opposed to the wood tearing, you failed to make a proper glue joint. When wooden aircraft are built, every joint is accompanied by a test block made from the same two pieces of wood and tested to destruction. If any joint fails, the entire section is removed and redon.

Great episode. Regarding riveting the toe rail; no, you don't want to do that. Too difficult to remove/service/repair as you and the boat get sorted out. Toe rails get wear.
