@Not Convinced What people don't mention nowadays is being a woman lowers your expected competence level significantly. So women tend to get hired at much, much lower proficiency level than men. And end up with people like me coaching them. When if I were in their position I wouldn't even get hired!!!! 🤬😡🤬

    • @winsomehax

Python is a mess. It's fine for knocking up a few line script. Writing anything more ambitious ends up running into the same problem as javascript but without the odd cools bits and even more frustration. Duck typing, get used to seeing the word 'self' in your code and for people crying 'not pythonic' because they made up a bunch of conventions to justify their bizarre and hazardous choices. Oh and __init__ ...seriously... falling over at run-time with errors that a non-toy language would have spotted at compile time... and don't forget that reformatting your code becomes an explosive issue because someone decided that spaces/tabs isn't just an aesthetic issue. Python belongs in the dustbin of failed experiments.

On one side there are many of us who just spend all our lives just trying to wrap our heads around the already existing programming languages, how they work, how a compiler works and so on
,while on the other side there are these people who just invent a new programming language just like that: I am always amazed how these people conceptualise and bring it to work..... How do their brains run in a manner to achieve all this....

Many people forget that this guy speaks fluent assembly, not to mention his excellent command of C, and that he can write directly in machine code because he understands so well what the machine does. Think about it for a second - learning IT and pushing the field forward cannot be done by people who speak Python, C# or Java only. If you are an IT student, please learn the basics! If you're a user - a non IT person who uses Python as a tool - great - welcome on board. But if you consider yourself to be an IT specialist - Python is not your toy! Otherwise in 20 years there will be no one left on the planet who knows how a computer works.

The guy at the front row must have been really mad for not getting the opportunity to ask his question. Sadly all good things come to an end. Guido also seems pretty nerdy as he stated earlier - and yet open to new ideas. That's why i think Python is at where it is. If given the question would have loved to ask Guido why he chose the name Python - what inspired him to do so, the implications of doing so and finally if he somewhat regretted naming it as "Python".

The bit about women in coding shows how even highly intelligent people can fall for this identity folly. So they got all these female speakers now but the actual core dev community is still overwhelmingly male. Indicating despite all the efforts they make and even using selection bias against men when mentoring, women simply aren't interested as much as men in this role. And they probably made the conferences worse by getting token speakers chosen based on their identity instead of based on their expertise in the actual topic the conference is about. Thus leaving us collectively worse off in the name of supposed equality.

@@chrishelm1 Because I get sick of hearing privileged people talk about oppression from a moral high ground. Neither Guido nor a Oxford student nor any of the celebrities that love to talk about it nowadays have anything new to say about it. Neither of them is actually doing anything about it even tho these are the people that have actual influence over things (an Oxford student less so obviously).

Open Source becoming obsolete? Ignorant question indeed, but don't blame because it is perhaps not interviewers field.
It is the **closed** sourced software that is going out, Microsoft, the monster of closed source, has gone Open Source and Visual Studio Code, Windows Terminal and other softwares are examples of Giants bowing to Open Source.

I would have hoped the talk to being a bit more political. So it was not very technical as it would have been interesting to learn what language design desicions were made for witch reasons instead of saying that is was like his gut feeling, at least from a technical point of view. On the other handsite, it seems to be a very big problem how emotional affected people get for changing tiny parts of a programming language and this emotion turns into hatred. So maybe it would have been interesting what steps cold be taken to make this culture more open. So here i think the talk was not detailed enough.
But thanks for organising and uploading these talks (sorry for my bad english)
