Been a licensed master plumber for 28 years , I own a plumbing business in three states I get tons of gas leak calls because of contractors using the blue or yellow tape on the gas line, If you use pipe dope rated for gas lines you will never have a gas leak.
I prefer that way too. I don’t remember on this specific unit. I’m pretty sure the pilot kept going out but the control valve said everything was normal.

At what point is it more economical to replace the water heater instead of individual components?
9yr mark is a good time to consider putting the repair money towards a new water heater. All depends on warranty, maintenance, and water conditions.
