My grandmother was originally from Sheffield, and whenever we went back to the UK to visit family, she would smuggle back food. When she got too old to travel, she made the rest of us do it whenever we went over. Every time I came back to the US, I'd be smuggling enough chocolate digestive biscuits that I expected to be tackled by a swat team at any moment. When our local market started carrying McVitie's, I think it was the beginning of a new life for her.

The BritRailPass for 15 days is really a tremendous buy. I was the envy of all my English friends as I just walked onto any train I felt like taking. And despite everyone's ritual moans about how the British rail system has declined, to an American it's unbelievably reliable, omnipresent, and useful.

The US rail system is notoriously primitive, extremely limited, slow and unreliable. Rumour has it that by the 23rd century, they will have a train that runs at nearly 160 km/h! I live in Spain where we have one of the fastest, most modern systems in the world with trains running at up to about 350 km/h.
I loved those when I lived in Glasgow, they are provided by Scotrail which is only slightly better than the service down south (bus and train, what luxury haha). My experience is Germany has the most reliable rail system in Europe, and it was the first time I was able to buy a ticket without having to talk to anyone. The London tube system tho, oh that was wild my first experience as a kid from a small Scottish town.

England is great. I liked the countryside guesthouses. Lots of discounts for "pensioners"= retired people of a certain age. Be prepared for rain and cool weather. Take walking shoes. You will have so much fun.

My mom was from York. Her family owned the home she was born in in 1926 to 1991. 5 St. Peter’s grove. We stayed there ever time we visited. It is now a bed and breakfast so we can still stay there. My mom use to say as a child she would have the minister to herself.
Yorkshire people are tight with money. They are not ungenerous, but they won't tolerate extravagance or waste. The “throwaway society” is inimical to them. They will have drawers or sheds full of things which “might come in useful”. String on parcels is carefully undone and kept for future use, and similar for the wrapping paper or boxes that make them up. We will re-use envelopes for letters; the ashes from the fire were riddled to get the ash to put on the allotment, while the cinders were kept to put on the path when it was snowing or icy. If the coal would contain a “dog” (or “a nigger in the woodpile” - nothing offensive here, just a rock that was black, but wasn't coal and could not burn) it would be taken back to the coal merchant with a vociferous complaint. On the other hand, a Yorkshireman will give you his last crust of bread if he thinks you need it more than he does.
My mother taught me to always buy tea towels as my own souvenir because they pack so close...everything else we shipped thru the post, expensive, but it all arrived safely so Well Done Posties everywhere!

The "Mint Cake" appeared to taste as appetizing as British Flap Jacks, meaning that they taste horrible. I love many British foods, drinks and snacks,but Flap Jacks are not one of them. I can SO appreciate Lawrence's gratitude for the Manchester United programs- I live outside of Seattle, WA and my fav sports team (don't judge) is the Philadelphia FLYERS on the opposite side of the country (a little over 2,800 miles/4,500km) which is only slightly closer than Chicago to Manchester (about a THOUSAND more miles- 3,800 miles/6,116km)!

Like that book for Lawrence my favorite item was an Ammonite fossil I bought in Canada at Fairmont Château Lake Louise Hotel at Lake Louise. England is on my list for countries to visit. Especially now to pay respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Miss them a lot as I grew up with her on the throne.
The last time I was in England, I remembered at the last minute at Heathrow that I had forgotten to buy Lemsips. I ALWAYS buy Lemsips. I raced into a shop and found them. I gathered up as many as I could carry and ran to the register. I dumped at least 8-10 boxes of Lemsips on the counter and the man looked down at them all and then up at me (moving only his eyeballs) and said, "Not feeling well?" God I love England. :)

I keep my British pound coin in my change purse always to insure my return to UK. I've been 8 times as my daughter married a British boy and I'm always happy when I am there!
Sadly, I've never been to England, but when my sister went years ago, she asked what I'd like her to bring back for me. My first response was to bring me back an Englishman, but my second choice was one of each coin. Still waiting for a British guy, but I do have the coins.

Great video. I live in Italy and for the first couple of years i used to fly back to the UK for a decent curry from my local restaurant and stock up on food items such as pasties, steak and ale pies, sausages, parsnips, gravy, English mustard and decent baking potatoes. Once i was asked to open my bag by airport security, there were Italians in the same queue behind me watching impatiently as i emptied my bag. When i packed my bag, i had taken the potatoes out of it's packaging, so i could cram a potato into every available space in the bag. Anyway they all came rolling out as i opened the bag, all in different directions and the Italians behind me where there trying to capture the potatoes as they rolled around the floor. Oh how we laughed (not).
There was a family where I grew up in western Kansas that had very large Black Currant Orchard I went with my Mom and we picked ten gallons of berries which Mom turned into jelly. It was very good.
Those Bonne Maman jars make awesome pill organizers! Yay! And I learned from Ancestry DNA that I am descended from Richard III. That and a nickel will get me exactly nothing, but it was interesting to learn kinda. I don't know much about him because he hasn't been well represented in the media. And I'm sure he's rolling in his car park to have the likes of me in his family tree. Poor man. As if being bludgeoned wasn't tragic enough. And Tarah's dress is absolutely stunning. I love Kendal mint cake although I haven't eaten it for years. You used to be able to get it in brown or white depending on which sugar was used. Great as an emergency food for walkers up in the Lake District in case you get into difficulty.

Lawrence's look at the clothes and hat pins! 😅 🤣 Small things are some of my favorites to collect on trips to other countries. Like that book for Lawrence my favorite item was an Ammonite fossil I bought in Canada at Fairmont Château Lake Louise Hotel at Lake Louise. England is on my list for countries to visit. Especially now to pay respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Miss them a lot as I grew up with her on the throne.
The last time I was in England, I remembered at the last minute at Heathrow that I had forgotten to buy Lemsips. I ALWAYS buy Lemsips. I raced into a shop and found them. I gathered up as many as I could carry and ran to the register. I dumped at least 8-10 boxes of Lemsips on the counter and the man looked down at them all and then up at me (moving only his eyeballs) and said, "Not feeling well?" God I love England. :)
I brought back so many books, I was glad I brought a large suitcase and a small one. The small suitcase was packed full of books from every place we saw in London and Windsor.

I grow native southern California plants in my gardens. The U.S. has many native currant and gooseberry species. In most states that do ban Ribes species, it is only the European black currant that is banned. There are a few states that ban every Ribes: New Hampshire, North Carolina, West Virginia, some counties in Maine, permits needed in Massachusetts. California has many native Ribes species (Google: Currants and Gooseberries native to California). American black currant (Ribes americanum) is native to the Chicago area, and is even spineless. You should grow it in your garden.

I keep my British pound coin in my change purse always to insure my return to UK. I've been 8 times as my daughter married a British boy and I'm always happy when I am there!
Sadly, I've never been to England, but when my sister went years ago, she asked what I'd like her to bring back for me. My first response was to bring me back an Englishman, but my second choice was one of each coin. Still waiting for a British guy, but I do have the coins.

Great video. I live in Italy and for the first couple of years i used to fly back to the UK for a decent curry from my local restaurant and stock up on food items such as pasties, steak and ale pies, sausages, parsnips, gravy, English mustard and decent baking potatoes. Once i was asked to open my bag by airport security, there were Italians in the same queue behind me watching impatiently as i emptied my bag. When i packed my bag, i had taken the potatoes out of it's packaging, so i could cram a potato into every available space in the bag. Anyway they all came rolling out as i opened the bag, all in different directions and the Italians behind me where there trying to capture the potatoes as they rolled around the floor. Oh how we laughed (not).

In Arizona (at WinCi) you can get little jars like the ones you brought back with you. The same brand, but not that many flavors.

"I carried soil....". That 3 word statement had me laughing for a full minute. It just hit me as a really funny statement, especially since you said it in such a boastful manner.
I love Kendal mint cake although I haven't eaten it for years. You used to be able to get it in brown or white depending on which sugar was used. Great as an emergency food for walkers up in the Lake District in case you get into difficulty.
That explains it! I couldn't work out why theirs was brown but mine was always white. Lovely stuff and very minty.

When visiting Leeds, friends took me to my first pub and someone asked me how I liked Yorkshire. I looked at my friends and asked, "have we been there yet:? Everyone died laughing, while I kept looking around asking what's so funny? We did visit York and the Jorvik Center, the Shambles, etc. A traveling Canadian

Growing up, when my family would travel, anything extra we bought or were gifted to us was all mailed to our local post office. That way it is either waiting for us or we can pick it up when it arrives.
When I worked at Deloitte (DTT) in New York, we got those little jam jars all the time. I dont know who imports them but they are available.
